Future physicians, newly admitted to the Turkish and English departments of the Faculty of Medicine, experienced the pride of taking their first step into their sacred profession. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/protokol-260312084413.png) The "March 14 Doctors' Day and White Coat Ceremony", held at the İbni Sina Auditorium of Üsküdar University NP Health Campus, brought together the academic world and future doctors. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/nevzat-tarhan-260312084505.png) ## **Prof. Nevzat Tarhan: “The path to being a good physician first goes through being a good human being”** Speaking at the ceremony, which also attracted interest from families, President of Üsküdar University Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that the medical profession is not only a field based on scientific knowledge but also a profession shaped by ethical values, humanity, and communication skills. Stating that the white coat ceremony is an unforgettable turning point in the lives of aspiring physicians, Prof. Tarhan said, “There are some unforgettable days in human life. The white coat ceremony is also a very important day in this respect. It is a meaningful beginning that our students will remember throughout their professional lives.” Stating that medicine is both a science and an art, Prof. Tarhan said, “Medicine is not just a profession; it is also an art and proceeds hand in hand with science. Therefore, before becoming a good physician, one must be a good human being. It is not possible for a person who fails to be a good human being to be a good physician.” Prof. Tarhan stated that medicine is one of the professions with the earliest developed ethical rules in the world, drawing attention to the importance of adhering to ethical principles in professional life, and said, “The strongest shield that will protect you in your professional life is ethical principles. A small mistake or a small lie can eventually turn into big errors. Great evils often start with a small mistake.” ## **“Do not lose your scientific curiosity”** Stating that knowledge in the field of medicine is rapidly changing, Prof. Tarhan emphasized that young aspiring physicians should be open to continuous learning, saying, “The half-life of knowledge used to be 30 years, today it has fallen to 3 years. Therefore, it is very important not to lose your scientific curiosity. One of the ways to harm a patient is to leave them untreated. It is necessary to follow new information and keep the literature constantly updated.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/nevzat-tarhan-2-260312084941.png) ## **“Humility and openness to criticism develop the physician”** Stating that one of the important characteristics of being a successful physician is humility, Prof. Tarhan said, “Humility gives a person the feeling of 'I can make mistakes.' This feeling allows for openness to criticism. Research shows that humble individuals make fewer mistakes and use their decision-making mechanisms more soundly.” ## **“Communication is sometimes more effective than medicine”** Prof. Tarhan drew attention to the importance of communication in the physician-patient relationship, saying, “There is a more effective method than medicine; communication. The trust relationship established with the patient directly affects the success of the treatment.” Prof. Tarhan stated that the placebo effect is also a scientific example demonstrating this trust relationship, adding that if the patient trusts the physician, the treatment process can progress more positively. ## **“The patient should be seen as a human being, not a case”** Prof. Tarhan stated that one of the biggest mistakes made in medicine is to see the patient only as a “case”, and said, “The patient should be seen as a human being, not a case. Listening to the patient and understanding their emotions makes a big difference in diagnosis and treatment.” Referring to Ibn-i Sina’s understanding of medicine in his speech, Tarhan said, “As Ibn-i Sina said; ‘The physician sometimes treats, often comforts.’ The duty of a physician is not only to treat but also to give hope and confidence to the patient.” At the end of his speech, Prof. Tarhan stated that medicine is a very special profession that directly touches human life, saying, “When it is said that 'the hand of the physician is sacred,' it actually refers to a profession that can touch human existence and life. I wish you to evaluate the opportunity offered by this profession with ethical values and love for humanity.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/hikmet-kocak-260312084556.png) ## **Prof. Hikmet Koçak: “Medicine is not a profession, but a lifestyle”** Speaking at the white coat ceremony held within the scope of March 14 Doctors' Day, Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Hikmet Koçak emphasized that medicine is not only a profession but also a lifestyle, congratulating the medical students and saying, “There are important stages in human life. One of them is the period of choosing a profession after high school. Perhaps some of you chose this path by your own will, and some by the guidance of your families. However, in the end, you chose medicine, one of the most valuable professions. I congratulate you all, and wish you good fortune.” ## **“The white coat is a symbol of trust and responsibility”** Prof. Koçak stated that the white coat is an important symbol in the medical profession, saying, “When you wear the white coat, you are actually sending the following message to the patient in front of you: ‘You can trust me. I have dedicated myself to this profession to find solutions to your problems.’ At the same time, medicine requires protecting the patient’s secrets. Because there is a strong trust relationship between the physician and the patient.” ## **“The stethoscope is not just a tool, but a symbol of labor”** Stating that another important symbol of medicine is the stethoscope, Prof. Koçak said, “A stethoscope is not just a tool used to listen to a heart. It is a symbol representing your youth, your dreams, and your labor. When a white coat and stethoscope come together, a physician identity that instills trust in the person facing you emerges.” ## **“Medicine is the continuation of an accumulation from the past”** In his speech, Prof. Koçak also touched upon the history of medicine, emphasizing that medicine is a field of knowledge and experience accumulated from the past to the present. In this context, Prof. Koçak drew attention to the role of Hikmet Boran during the Turkish War of Independence, and also commemorated physicians who pioneered work in the field of radiology during the Ottoman period, stating that Esad Feyzi was one of the physicians who brought the first X-rays to Türkiye, and İbrahim Vasıf Çınar was known for his pioneering work in X-ray applications. Prof. Koçak said, “A physician is the person who carries all the accumulated knowledge from the past to the present. The education you receive here today has been made possible thanks to the contributions of people who dedicated themselves to this profession in the past.” At the end of his speech, Prof. Koçak touched upon the value of health in human life, recalling the famous lines of Suleiman the Magnificent: “There is no esteemed possession among the people like sovereignty / May there be no fortune in the world like a breath of health.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/haydar-sur-260312084631.png) ## **Prof. Haydar Sur: “White coat ceremonies are unforgettable moments in the journey of medicine”** In his speech at the ceremony, Dean of Üsküdar University Faculty of Medicine Prof. Haydar Sur emphasized that the values of the medical profession are a trust passed down from generation to generation, and said, “Ceremonies are actually very important; because we experience moments where the principles of our lives become visible. This white coat ceremony that our students will experience today will be one of the unforgettable moments throughout their professional lives.” ## **“Medical values are a trust”** Stating that academics carry the responsibility of educating students with great honor, Prof. Sur said that the fundamental principles of the medical profession have been transferred from the past to the present, and added, “We are here before you with our academic robes, honorably training our students. These principles did not descend from the heavens to us; they were trusts left to us by our former professors. We are now passing on this trust to our own students. I am sure that our students will embrace this trust better than us and pass it on to the next generations. Thus, science will progress, and better service will be provided to humanity.” ## **“We become hopeful when we see our students”** In his speech, Prof. Sur also touched upon the wars and injustices happening in the world, stating that these situations deeply saddened him, and said, “My heart bleeds in the face of the wars, injustices, and sufferings of the oppressed in the world. The world may be in sorrow; however, when we see our students, our hearts are filled with hope.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/yusuf-alpay-260312084708.png) ## **Medical student Yusuf Alpay: “Medicine is not just a profession, but a lifelong learning journey”** Yusuf Alpay, 1st-year Turkish Medical Faculty Representative, stated that they are proud to take the first steps of their medical journey, emphasizing that medical education carries not only knowledge but also the responsibility of touching human lives, and said, “As the youngest members of the medical family, we are proud to be a part of such an established and honorable family in this period when we are taking the first steps of the medical journey we have dreamed of for years.” ## **The white coat is not just a garment** Emphasizing that starting medical school is not just an academic process, Alpay said, “As we put those spotless white coats on our shoulders, we knew very well that we were not just wearing a coat. That coat represented healing, hope, compassion, and deep respect for human life. Our stethoscopes, for now, mostly listen to our own excited heartbeats. We are just beginning to discover the magnificent order of cells, tissues, and the human body. But we know that every piece of knowledge we learn in these halls today will touch a person’s life tomorrow.” ## **March 14 is also a symbol of resistance** Alpay stated that March 14 is not just a day of celebration, saying, “In 1919, when Istanbul was under occupation, medical students hoisted a gigantic Turkish flag between the two towers of the school, igniting the flame of independence. The courage displayed by Medical Student Hikmet Boran and his friends was not just an act of hoisting a flag; it is a strong symbol of science, freedom, and love for the homeland.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/emre-aydin-260312084746.png) ## **Medical student Emre Aydın: “The white coat is not just a fabric, but a symbol of great responsibility”** Speaking at the ceremony held within the scope of March 14 Doctors' Day, Emre Aydın, 1st-year English Medicine student representative, also stated that they are proud to take the first steps of their medical journey, emphasizing that the white coat is not just a symbol but also an expression of great responsibility. Aydın stated that the students reached this point with great sacrifices, saying, “In every part of this white coat we will wear today, there are traces of our sleepless nights, our efforts, and our sweat. Some of us came to this point by sacrificing our sleep, some our social lives, and some the most beautiful moments of our youth.” In his speech, Aydın also referred to the importance Mustafa Kemal Atatürk gave to youth, saying, “We promise to walk on the path opened by the Great Leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and towards the goal he showed. As individuals worthy of his words, ‘All my hope is in the youth,’ we will practice our profession under the guidance of reason, conscience, and science.” ## **Coats were donned, excitement peaked** Following the speeches, the ceremony moved to its most anticipated emotional moments. 1st-year students from the Turkish and English departments of the Faculty of Medicine were invited to the stage in groups, accompanied by applause. ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/onluk-260312085119.png) Students, donning their white coats from the hands of the university's esteemed academics and professors, officially took their first steps into the sacred medical profession.
