[Üsküdar Üniversitesi](https://uskudar.edu.tr) Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, evaluated the effects of the concept of goodness on psychological well-being.

## **Doing good makes you happy**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that the concept of goodness is now a newly discovered concept by psychology professionals and mental health specialists, stating, “This concept was forgotten, abandoned. It has been rediscovered. There are many studies on goodness. In fact, it has been observed that doing good benefits people. How does it benefit? Goodness makes not only the other person but also the individual happy. It has an effect that reduces depression and anxiety. When a person does good, their self-esteem also increases. Research shows that when a person helps someone else, a happiness hormone, triggered by empathy, is secreted in the brain.”

## **Doing good has an antidepressant effect**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that despite the increasing depression in the world, there is no increase in psychological and spiritual well-being, adding, “On the contrary, it is getting worse. Especially in response to the rising cases of depression, studies conducted to identify the causes of the problem have revealed the following result: For people to be happy, others must also be happy. Doing good has an antidepressant effect. We can say this with ease. They define this era as the age of mistrust. Mistrust has increased to such an extent, loneliness has increased. People are afraid to turn their backs on their spouses when they go home, worrying ‘Can they harm me?’ or ‘Will I suffer from my children?’ Such anxieties make life unbearable. As a solution to this, when you do good, you tell the other person, ‘I am your friend.’ You say, ‘No harm will come to you from me.’ You say, ‘Forgive me if you have any negative thoughts about me.’ You cannot say these things directly. This will be a random, silent good deed. When good things are spoken about behind someone's back and reach their ears, they will say, ‘Look, I wasn't thinking well of them, but they were saying good things about me. What a bad person I was. How could I have done this?’ That's what they will think. Therefore, when a person is generous with goodness, it unknowingly returns to them as a gain.”

## ** When someone does good, everyone benefits**

“In the capitalist system, doing good increases operational costs,” said Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, adding, “Currently, there is a modernism that says, ‘Don't help, don't give charity, don't do good deeds.’ This is the doctrine of the capitalist system. This doctrine has produced wrong results because when someone does good, everyone actually benefits. That person appears to be losing something, giving something away, but that's not the case. Mother Teresa has a famous saying. They asked her, ‘How does the world become livable?’ and she replied, ‘By doing good, one on one.’ She summarized it so beautifully. This is a universal truth. She made doing good, one on one, a culture.”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan pointed out that there is a global disease of narcissism, stating, “Narcissism is selfishness transformed into a personality. It is something given by modernism. It presented the pursuit of pleasure to us as ego. Secondly, it says, ‘You are important, family is not important.’ It says, ‘You are important, society is not important.’ It confuses individuality with selfishness. This is the worst gift of the twentieth century to humanity.”

## **Let's do selfless, random, and silent good deeds**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that doing good deeds used to be a culture in Anatolia, adding, “But this culture is currently fading, disappearing. The tree has begun to dry up; we need to revive it. When doing good, let's do selfless, random, and silent good deeds. Without expecting any benefit, not for show. One should not even expect applause or praise. These good deeds are much more effective. It is better than doing no good at all, or always saying ‘me, me, me’.”

## **We must raise young people who think of societal good**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also stated that we should raise young people and children who think not only of themselves but also of societal good, saying, “What we need in this situation is a young generation that thinks, ‘What can I do for the benefit and happiness of people?’ Let's not raise a young person who only dreams for themselves. Let them dream for their country, dream for the future, dream of doing something for others. Let people dream about what kind of legacy they will leave when they reach the end of their lives. In such situations, all of these are acts of goodness. For this, intention is important.”

## **Doing good should be a mental goal**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that one should make doing good a mental goal, stating, “One should think, ‘I will say yes to good deeds in my life, and no to bad deeds,’ and make this a mental goal. The conclusion we draw is that destiny wants us to be a machine for good. Do good and cast it into the sea. The Creator knows and sees. The good done somehow comes before the person. It does not go to waste. That is, these are also for the benefit of the person. There are many things in a person's life, but goodness adds meaning to life. One of my professors once told me a story. He had a friend who did not believe in religious or spiritual values at all. He asked him, ‘I saw you giving scholarships to one or two people. You were someone who scorned spirituality, why are you doing this?’ His friend said, ‘When that child is happy, I am happy too.’ This is a social benefit. It is a social investment. This is in our nature, but our nature is on the verge of spoiling.”

## **Random acts of kindness add meaning to life**

Tarhan stated that one should set out today thinking about what good deed they will do, saying, “Random acts of kindness lead to unexpected good deeds. Therefore, they add meaning to our lives and beautify our relationships. They correct misconceptions. In our culture, there is generally a misconception: especially men think, ‘If I smile, I cannot maintain authority.’ However, authority is possible not with a frown, but by living principled lives and keeping one's word. You need a horizontal relationship with your child. You need to be able to discuss good, right, and wrong with them. Uncommunicative, directly authoritarian relationships create a feeling in children and young people that ‘My mother and father don't love me.’ For this reason, all of these are acts of goodness. Goodness does not necessarily mean giving a material gift.”

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that there is an increase in incidents of violence, suicides, and divorces in society, adding, “All of these are alarms. As a solution, teaching young people and children to do good as an ego ideal and integrating it into society is necessary. People who think positively have healthier bodies in old age. They live eight and a half years longer. Fewer health problems are observed.”

## **Selfishness is the greatest enemy of goodness…**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan expressed that the culture of doing good deeds, inherited from our traditions, should be further spread, stating, “In our society, especially during the month of Ramadan, people go to the grocery store. Someone's debt from the credit book is paid off and closed, and that person does not know who helped them. All of these are our values that need to be revived. That is, goodness benefits people. Goodness makes people happy and adds meaning to life. It increases our self-esteem. It makes a person feel good about themselves. We need to make this a philosophy of life. If this happens, there will be nothing bad left in the world. I wish we could do this globally. Selfishness is the greatest enemy of goodness.”
