Üsküdar Üniversitesi Dental Hospital Periodontology Specialist Assistant Professor Dr. Kübra Güler provided information about the causes and treatment methods of gum recession. **After dental calculus cleaning, the receded gum does not return to its original state! ** Periodontology Specialist Assistant Professor Dr. Kübra Güler stated that gum recessions appear due to various reasons, and said, “Although there are different reasons, the most fundamental cause is dental calculus accumulation.” Assistant Professor Dr. Güler stated that as dental calculus accumulates, the gum slowly recedes downwards, and warned, “After dental calculus cleaning, the receded gum does not return to its original state.” **Treatment is planned after the gums regain their health!** Assistant Professor Dr. Güler noted that treatment planning can be done after dental calculus cleaning is performed and the gums regain their health, and explained the treatment method as, “The most basic treatment is to take a small amount of gum tissue from another area of the mouth and graft it onto the site of gum recession. For this, a piece is usually taken from the palate area. Depending on the size of the gum recession, that is, how much tissue is needed, that amount is cut from the palate area and attached to the prepared area with various sutures.” **The entire recession may not always be covered!** Underlining that after the intervention, the patient must take care of the treated area as well as possible, Assistant Professor Dr. Kübra Güler said, “The area should be kept clean and overuse should be avoided. Within 1 week to 10 days, the grafted tissue adheres to its place by nourishing from the underlying tissues, and the gum recession is treated.” However, Assistant Professor Dr. Güler noted that in cases of significant gum recession, the entire recession may not always be covered, and added, “However, the important thing is to form a firm, attached, and healthy tissue that prevents the tooth from moving. This is made possible by treatments involving gum grafts, where gum tissue is taken from the palate in a procedure called ‘free gingival graft’. After the procedure, antibiotics and painkillers are prescribed to the patient to prevent pain and infection.” **After the sutures are removed, the patient can return to their normal routine!** Assistant Professor Dr. Güler completed her words by stating that various applications are also made to the wound area created where the tissue was taken from the palate: “For the wound area on the palate, a bandage-like biomaterial called PRF, obtained from the patient's blood, is created and attached to the injured area where the tissue was taken. This biomaterial in this area is not affected during eating and drinking. During this treatment period, patients are expected not to use the grafted area for approximately 10 days.
