Üsküdar Üniversitesi Head of the Occupational Health and Safety Department Dr. Lecturer Rüştü Uçan and Lecturer Abdurrahman İnce evaluated how devices such as chargers left plugged in can pose a fire hazard. 

OHS Expert Dr. Rüştü Uçan stated that normally, when no energy is being drawn, and the phone is not connected to the charger, a charger plugged into the socket should not burn or cause a fire, and continued as follows: 

## **If there is overheating, it should be taken out of use! **

“If the device has overheated until the phone is unplugged, thus becoming pyrophoric (easily ignitable substance), it may start to burn after the phone is unplugged. This event is more likely to occur while the phone is charging. To prevent this, an original charger should be used first. Normally, both the phone and the charger heat up a little during charging. After charging is complete, both cool down. It should be checked whether the charger is overheating, and if there is excessive heating, it should be taken out of use.”

## **Overheating of lithium batteries should be prevented**

Dr. Uçan, drawing attention to the fact that lithium batteries are the second issue to be considered in terms of fire hazard in electronic devices, said, “Lithium batteries are now used in all smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Their overheating should also be prevented.”

## **High ambient temperature can fuel it…**

Dr. Rüştü Uçan, stating that high ambient temperatures can fuel overheating, noted the following:

“Overheating can also occur when they are left plugged in. If these batteries start to swell, they should be taken out of use. Since their fires are Class D metal fires, water and water-based extinguishers should absolutely not be used. Most other common extinguishers are also ineffective in these types of fires. Furthermore, lithium battery fires mostly start explosively.”

## **Loose connection is the most insidious and common cause of fire!**

Dr. Rüştü Uçan, explaining that insufficient cross-sectional area of the conductor in electrical cable usage is also a cause of fire, stated the following:

“A cable with sufficient conductor thickness should be selected according to the power to be drawn. Also, when cables are run under a rug or used coiled on a drum, they cannot cool sufficiently, heat up, and cause fires. All connection points must be tight. Loose connection is the most insidious and common cause of fire. All connections should be checked periodically, and connections that start to loosen should be tightened. Especially in plug-socket connections, these loose connections are a very common cause of fire. If there is heating in these connections or if an odor starts to develop, they should be immediately taken out of use, and use should continue after the loose connection problem is resolved.”

## **High voltage formations can trigger fire…**

Lecturer Abdurrahman İnce also pointed out that the problem would be greater in other electrical devices used at home that draw more power, compared to electronic household appliances, and stated that these devices should also be used carefully.

OHS Expert İnce said, “When power returns after an electricity outage, or in cases where the sudden mains voltage comes low, high, or fluctuating (especially during high voltage formations), electronic devices can malfunction and cause fires. As a precaution, it is recommended to use a regulator.”
