The 9th Science and Idea Festival (BFF), organized by Üsküdar University for high school students in cooperation with the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education, hosted colorful moments. The award ceremony of the festival, held at Üsküdar University Çarşı Campus, took place in the Emir Nebi Conference Hall.

Awards found their recipients at the festival, held for the 9th time with the motto “Your Idea Your Invention,” which was also attended by Üsküdar District Governor Adem Yazıcı and Üsküdar District Director of National Education Semih Durmuş.

Good ideas are celebrated at the festival, held in a festive atmosphere

Üsküdar University Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Göngör noted that good ideas were celebrated at the festival, which was held in a festive atmosphere, and said that the creativity emerging from the brilliant minds of young people was being evaluated.

“If this world, if humanity, is to be saved and move towards brighter days, it will be possible with the sparkle in your eyes and the enlightenment in your brains, young people,” said Prof. Dr. Nazife Göngör, adding, “If one day children will not be massacred in this world, if one day humans will not shed each other’s blood, if one day it will be possible to live in a world full of love, respect, and value for humanity, then this will be possible with the radiance on your faces. Therefore, produce, touch science, engage with science, think, work, and produce.”

“As you continue to work in harmony with science, this world will change. Children in Gaza will not die.”

Prof. Dr. Nazife Göngör also stated that Üsküdar University is a production area and a place where science festivals are held, saying, “Üsküdar University awaits all our young people who are hardworking, interested in science, and whose hearts beat with the excitement of science. We want to do beautiful things together with all our young people and their brilliant minds on this journey of humanity.”

Prof. Dr. Nazife Göngör also expressed their desire to make beautiful contributions to humanity through the work carried out as a university, concluding her words by saying, “As you continue to work in harmony with science, this world will change. Children in Gaza will not die. The children in Gaza will also smile. They will also be happy. Every living being and every human born into the world has the right to live.”

“Writing history is very important. But learning lessons from it is even more important”

Istanbul Provincial Director of National Education Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Mücahit Yentür stated that 571 years have passed since the conquest of Istanbul, and continued as follows:

“The conquest of Istanbul has given us very profound messages. Writing history is very important. But learning lessons from it is even more important. When Fatih Sultan Mehmet conquered Istanbul, he guaranteed justice and mercy to all faiths, all thoughts, and all races. Today, human rights conventions, the Geneva Conventions, and EU human rights concepts are presented to the public with very grand and ornate sentences. But for whom? For the powerful. We want to raise a youth who are faithful, devout, sincere, friendly with science and technology, curious, and interested, respecting everyone’s rights and laws. We believe that the most beneficial and benevolent among people are those who are useful to others.”

Ways to learn to produce new knowledge from existing knowledge…

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Mücahit Yentür stated that they hold consultation meetings with the deans of all education faculties in Istanbul every three months, emphasizing the importance of combining the academic world with practical application and taking the ideas of the lecturers.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Mücahit Yentür, stating that information is accessible at one's fingertips, also said that teaching ways to produce new knowledge from existing knowledge is the most important duty of educators.

Yentür noted that teaching is a profession where learning never ends, and stated that teachers are both learners and educators.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Mücahit Yentür stated that they would prepare more strongly for the 2024-2025 academic year and wished success to the 193 thousand students who will take the High School Entrance Exam in Istanbul on June 2nd and to the students who will take the YKS (Higher Education Institutions Examination) on June 8th-9th.

It is a source of pride for us to be able to sustain this festival

Üsküdar University Vice-Rector and Festival Coordinator Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk greeted the young participants of the festival as “Dear young people who show us how to look at the future with hope and refresh our spirits,” adding, “Due to the murders committed in Gaza before the eyes of all humanity, we had to fit all our activities into one day. We could not experience the enthusiasm of previous years this year.”

“It is a source of pride for us to have initiated such a festival for the first time in Turkey and to be able to sustain it,” said Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk, explaining that for those who ranked in the top 3 at the festival, the patent office would conduct an examination, and if there was a right to obtain a patent, the university would apply for a patent on behalf of the students. Furthermore, if they chose Üsküdar University, their scholarships, regardless of the initial percentage, would be increased to 75%.

One of the 13 projects sent to space is from Üsküdar University…

Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk noted that they are a university that developed the SMA vaccine, its R&D has been completed, and the drug, a single dose of which is administered for 2.5 million dollars in the USA, has reached the production stage. He explained, “The experiments conducted showed us that it is more effective than what is produced in America. We have also truly taken the lead in cancer immunotherapy and studies related to artificial intelligence. Furthermore, as we possess one of the 13 projects supported by TÜBİTAK that went to space, we sent experimental studies to space to investigate how genes function in conditions without gravity, and whether we could find a new method in cancer treatment if we provide those conditions. The necessary work was carried out there, and currently, the analyses on Earth are taking place.”

Prof. Dr. Muhsin Konuk also stated that they have become Turkey’s brain hub university, exploring whether neurodegenerative diseases can be treated in various ways, and added that they welcome young people to the university as students.
