## Özet

Experts state that holiday visits are an important social ritual that strengthens family bonds and reinforces the sense of belonging, adding that visits made especially during cultural and religious holidays help individuals keep their social support networks alive.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel, stating that children can develop empathy, respect, and a sense of identity by spending time with their elders, said, “For elderly individuals, holiday visits are often a powerful experience that reduces feelings of loneliness and increases their social visibility.” Tunçel pointed out that digital communication tools play a complementary role to face-to-face interaction when distance is a factor, emphasizing that holiday rituals can support positive psychology, mindfulness, and attachment-based therapy approaches in daily life.

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the psychological and emotional effects of holiday visits on children, youth, and the elderly, and their role in strengthening family bonds.

**Holiday visits strengthen belonging and attachment!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel stated that holiday visits are one of the important social rituals that strengthen individuals' sense of belonging and attachment, adding, “Especially visits made during cultural and religious holidays like Eid al-Fitr help individuals keep their social support networks alive.”

Tunçel conveyed that visiting elders can trigger certain emotions in individuals, saying, “One feels part of a family and history, which reveals a sense of belonging and rootedness. Seeing the life experiences of elders increases feelings of appreciation, gratitude, and respect in individuals. The familiar family environment contributes to stress reduction, and feelings of trust and emotional relief are experienced. Childhood memories and shared rituals strengthen positive emotions, increasing happiness. These types of social contacts are among the elements we call ‘protective factors’ in psychology and can increase a person's capacity to cope with stress.”

**Holiday visits make the elderly feel still valued!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel noted that for elderly individuals, holiday visits are often a powerful experience that reduces feelings of loneliness and increases their social visibility, stating, “As one ages, the social circle may narrow, and individuals may feel disconnected from society. Holiday visits, however, send the message to elderly individuals: ‘You are still at the center of your family, and you are valued.’”

Emphasizing the importance of these visits for elderly individuals, Tunçel explained, “They make them feel valued and remembered, offer an opportunity to share life experiences, reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation, and can increase their life satisfaction. Clinical observations show that regular social contact can reduce depressive affect and support overall psychological resilience in elderly individuals.”

**Spending time with elders is very valuable for children's emotional development**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel also pointed out that for children and youth, spending time with elders is very valuable for emotional development and identity formation, stating the following:

“In this process, children learn to form intergenerational bonds, develop social skills such as empathy and respect, gain a sense of identity and belonging through family stories, and learn patience, tolerance, and understanding different life experiences. Additionally, grandparents can often be figures who offer unconditional acceptance and warmth to children. This can strengthen children's sense of emotional security.”

**Digital communication is not a replacement for face-to-face interaction, but a complementary tool!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel noted that digital communication tools such as video calls and messaging can be a very valuable alternative, especially when visits are not possible due to distance, adding, “However, from a psychological perspective, face-to-face interaction has some unique aspects.”

Tunçel stated that face-to-face communication includes elements such as body language, hugs, hand-kissing, and a shared physical environment, and these play an important role in strengthening emotional bonds. Therefore, she said, digital communication should be regarded not as a complete ‘replacement’ but rather as a ‘complementary tool.’

**Meaningful relationships are one of the strongest factors protecting mental health!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel also noted that holiday rituals that strengthen family bonds can support the application of some therapy approaches in daily life, concluding her words as follows:

“Expressing feelings of gratitude and appreciation can support a positive psychology approach, strengthening intergenerational communication can support a family therapy perspective, reinforcing secure relationships can support attachment-based approaches, and recognizing the value of the moment spent with family can support mindfulness approaches.

Establishing and maintaining meaningful relationships is one of the strongest factors protecting mental health. Holiday visits are also among the important social and cultural practices that keep these relationships alive.”
