## Özet

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, **Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan** was among the speakers at the program organized by the **Istanbul Economy Congress** with the main theme of “**Turkey and the Social Morality Code in the Economy of the Future**.” Tarhan, who made evaluations on the problem of existence and its relationship with economics at the two-day event organized by the **Turkish Asian Center for Strategic Studies** (TASAM) and TASAM BGC, delivered a presentation titled “Is Man Homoeconomicus? Or Homo Psychologicus?” Making inferences about human existence in the context of economics, **Tarhan said, "According to Fukuyama, man is not homoeconomicus, but homo psychologicus. Man is a psychological being. Psychological factors influence human behavior such as purchasing, investing, and shopping.**”

##  **“They believe in God but do not trust Him”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that believing in a transcendent power is a source of happiness for humans, said: “Believing, taking refuge, and trusting in a transcendent power is the most effective method in trauma treatment. What is transcendent power? It is a person's mental refuge. These can be guardian angels, etc. The peace derived from thinking 'there is a power that knows and controls everything, listening to me, knowing me' and taking refuge in it treats trauma. I see that believing people cannot attain the peace of surrender that belief provides. Because they believe in God but do not trust Him. Currently, due to our traditional understanding of religiosity, we are trying to live the old tradition today. However, let's take the old tradition and bring it to today. Let's dress it in today's clothes. Then, see how people attain the peace that belief gives.” he said.

## **“Man is a psychological being”**

Tarhan, making evaluations based on the concepts of Homoeconomicus and Homopsychologicus, said: “According to the capitalist system, when making purchasing, buying, and investment decisions, humans decide with the homoeconomicus model. As Descartes said, 'I think, therefore I am,' it expresses the view that reason is the basis of everything. In the 1990s, a Chinese author wrote a book called 'Descartes' Error.' In that book, he put forward the thesis that not everything is reason, and emotions are also a scientific category. According to the homoeconomicus model, man is a rational actor who acts with reason. Thus, he has perfect information. The actor maximizes subjective utility, which is self-interest. The actor weighs the benefits and harms of various actions and then chooses the option that provides the relatively greatest benefit at the cost. Because this is the case, when people invest, they only do so based on profit and loss, and their basic needs. There is no self-interest, there is trust. Values, competence, sufficiency come later. So how does trust arise? On this subject, Fukuyama, in his book 'Trust,' makes a distinction between high-trust societies and low-trust societies. When people shop, they do so not according to their basic needs but with a desire for satisfaction, so man is not homoeconomicus. He says man is homo psychologicus. Man is a psychological being. Psychological factors affect purchasing, investment, and shopping behavior.” he said.

## **“Logical intelligence is fixed, while emotional intelligence is variable”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, also drawing attention to types of intelligence and where they are used, said: “It has now emerged that the universe is digitally based, and they ask if we should call ourselves homodigiticus. There is a universal database. What does a universal database actually mean? Its equivalent in the Holy Quran is Levh-i Mahfuz, meaning the preserved tablet, the main book. First, there is the main book, divine knowledge, then mathematics, geometry, physics, chemistry, energy. Therefore, man is not only a psychological being but also a spiritual being. There are also those who say that when making decisions, man becomes homospiritualiticus. The actor is one who maximizes social utility instead of merely having sufficient individual utility. He maximizes divine utility. They say that optimal choice occurs this way. While doing this, it is necessary to create a neuromanagement diagram, where there are five types of intelligence. Among these types of intelligence, there is ideal intelligence and skill intelligence. The types of intelligence are as follows: logical intelligence, which involves reasoning methods, and emotional intelligence. In emotional intelligence, shopping behavior is important. Logical intelligence is fixed, while emotional intelligence is variable. Being idealistic is related to logical intelligence. Being an activist is related to emotional intelligence. Having work discipline is related to bodily intelligence. Being able to listen to one's inner voice, internal responsibility, and accountability are related to conscientious intelligence. Social intelligence, on the other hand, is closely related to situations such as being open to cooperation and being trustworthy.” he stated.

## **“Man can be intelligent and hardworking, but if he is not good, it will not work”**

Tarhan said, “Currently, our education system aims to raise intelligent and hardworking children, but a third thing needs to be added: being a good person. A person can be intelligent and hardworking, but if they are not good, it will not work. Think of an intelligent, hardworking, and skilled chemical engineer who goes and produces synthetic marijuana. Therefore, we need to add a new parameter: being intelligent, hardworking, and a good person. In economic theories, one of the famous economists is asked, 'Why don't economic theories work?' He replies, 'Because we can't find honest people, how can they work!' We need to teach morality to aspiring leaders. Ethical behavior should also be taken into account in economics.”
