## Özet

**Sociologist Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı stated that the concept of family in TV series is mostly handled through negative themes such as dramatic conflicts, toxic relationships, betrayal, incest, and violence, and said, “These contents, which damage the emotional world of viewers, weaken family ties; moreover, by portraying Turkish people as a community constantly living in intrigues, they contribute to the reinforcement of a wrong image, especially abroad.” **

**Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı noted that such productions are criticized not only from the perspective of the Turkish family but also at an international level, and that their prohibition has even been on the agenda in some countries on the grounds that they harm the family structure, stating, “Therefore, although the foreign exchange inflow and contributions to tourism from TV series may seem positive in the short term, they can create negative effects on Turkey’s international image in the long term.” **

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı, faculty member of Üsküdar University, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of Sociology, evaluated the subject of family in today's Turkish-made TV series.

 ## **The concept of family is mostly handled through dramatic conflicts**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı stated that the concept of family in today's Turkish-made TV series is mostly handled through dramatic conflicts, saying, “Negative themes such as toxic relationships, betrayal, incest, and violence within the family form the fundamental building blocks of these series. This approach can lead viewers to perceive the family not as a safe harbor, but as an arena of constant conflict. The marginalization of positive elements such as healing, reconciliation, and love paves the way for a negative perception of family among viewers.”

 ## **There are also productions that strengthen the family**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı pointed out that there are also productions that strengthen the family, stating, “Series like Gönül Dağı emphasize values such as love, respect, sacrifice, and solidarity, giving positive messages to viewers. Such productions, with elements reflecting the essence of Turkish culture, have the potential to achieve high ratings both in Turkey and in countries where these series are highly popular. Therefore, series that portray strong family ties also attract large audiences, which invalidates the argument of some producers that they ‘cannot get ratings’.”

 ## **Turkish people are portrayed as a community constantly living in intrigues**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı indicated that family representations in Turkish TV series are often presented in an overly dramatized manner, far from real life and pushing boundaries, saying, “Betrayal, deception, hidden secrets, and intense conflicts are handled exaggeratedly, and extramarital affairs or excessive hatred among family members are unnecessarily highlighted. This approach can lead to negative repercussions not only at an individual level but also at a societal level. These contents, which damage the emotional world of viewers, weaken family ties; moreover, by portraying Turkish people as a community constantly living in intrigues, they contribute to the reinforcement of a wrong image, especially abroad.”

 ## **There are negative effects on Turkey’s international image**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı noted that such productions are criticized not only from the perspective of the Turkish family but also at an international level, and that their prohibition has even been on the agenda in some countries on the grounds that they harm the family structure, stating, “Therefore, although the foreign exchange inflow and contributions to tourism from TV series may seem positive in the short term, they can create negative effects on Turkey’s international image in the long term.”

 ## **Why do some countries want to ban Turkish TV series?**

Prof. Dr. Süleymanlı also touched upon the reasons given by experts in some countries who say, “Turkish TV series should be banned,” stating, “Some of these views bear similarities to criticisms raised in Turkey. The frequent treatment of themes such as the normalization of distorted family relationships and the promotion of betrayal and violence leads to increasing warnings about their long-term effects on social structures for viewers.”

 ## **Claim: Turkish TV series weaken marriages in Russia… **

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı drew attention to the fact that Turkish TV series are also criticized for different reasons, stating, “Indeed, Russian psychologist Andrey Zberovskiy, while expressing the negative aspects of Turkish TV series from his country's perspective, states that the idealized portrayal of male characters creates unrealistic expectations, especially among Russian female viewers. According to him, women comparing their husbands to the ‘perfect’ characters in series can lead to disappointment and the weakening of marriages in countries like Russia.”

 ## **There is a reaction to the presentation of cultural elements in a mocking tone**

Furthermore, Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı noted that Turkish TV series abroad can become a focal point of criticism not only for their content that harms family structures but also for content that can damage cultural sensitivities, stating, “Indeed, in some productions, the presentation of the Turkish language spoken in a sister country like Azerbaijan, its songs, and cultural elements in a trivialized and even mocking tone, even if intended for comedic purposes, leads to serious reactions in the public opinion of that country. Such examples prevent the ‘soft power’ function expected from these series from working correctly; on the contrary, instead of the anticipated cultural rapprochement, they generate negative perceptions even in the closest geographies.”

 ## **How is the family perception of younger generations affected by these series?**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı explained that the TV series watched by children and adolescents on various platforms significantly shape both their family perceptions and behaviors, and continued:

“Research shows that young people are particularly influenced by negative characters. The attractive and dramatized portrayal of criminals, fraudsters, violent individuals, or figures who disregard moral rules in Turkish TV series can lead young viewers to model such behaviors and question traditional family structures. Adolescents, especially, may imitate characters in TV series when they cannot find healthy role models at home. This situation creates false perceptions about family values and relationships; passionate loves, dramatic reconciliations, and revenge stories in series cause young people to experience disappointment by comparing them to real relationships. Intense dramatic themes create unrealistic expectations about family in young viewers and can negatively affect family communication and relationships in the long term.”

 ## **Family-supporting productions should highlight healthy family relationships**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı also emphasized that productions supporting the family should be prepared with an understanding that prioritizes social values and healthy family relationships, stating, “TV series should not only convey dramatic elements but also fundamental values such as love, respect, trust, and solidarity to the audience, and should avoid violence and negative relationship patterns. This approach has the potential to teach young viewers, in particular, healthy family dynamics, mutual respect, and empathy.”

 ## **Sociologists should also be involved in supervision processes**

Prof. Dr. Ebulfez Süleymanlı emphasized that although Turkish TV series often focus on themes of “the power of love” and “strong family ties,” these should be presented within a realistic and healthy framework, and concluded:

“Furthermore, it is important that TV series are produced with a sense of social responsibility and that families carefully monitor the content their children watch. In this context, the inclusion of sociologists in supervision processes can ensure a healthier evaluation of content in terms of its societal impacts. Sociologists can analyze the social reflections of TV series and contribute to the development of content that strengthens family structure. Consequently, to mitigate the negative effects on young viewers, it is crucial to develop content that reflects healthy family structures starting from the scriptwriting stage. Such productions will strengthen family and social ties and also make positive contributions to Turkey’s cultural image.”
