Ülkü, warning that especially young people and children can learn violence from the screen, said, “In children who watch such content, aggressive behaviors and a tendency towards violence may emerge through modeling. Violence can be reflected in children's behavior.” Uzman Klinik Psikolog İnci Nur Ülkü from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made an assessment regarding the reasons for the interest in violent TV series and films and their effects on mental health. **Tendency towards violence increases** Expert Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, stating that violent content on screens has increased significantly recently, and the interest in such series and films is high, said, “These series started appearing more often because they get ratings. Along with these series, the violence being depicted also tends to increase. It directly affects society. The frequent portrayal of violence in the media can lead to modeling violence, normalizing it, and desensitization. Some series have negative effects on mental health,” she warned. **Exposure to violence negatively affects** Expert Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü stated that individuals who are more exposed to violence in the media begin to see the world as a darker and more evil place, perceiving it as more violent. **Children exposed to violence** Noting that violent series and films are preferred and watched more due to their frightening and exciting nature, Expert Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü said, “Violent broadcasts on television reach people of all ages and negatively affect children in many ways. There are seriously violent and highly watched series. Adolescents, in particular, sometimes copy these role models without any mental processing. Violence is approved in these series. Children learn many things through technology and internalize them as behavior.” **Children take violence as a “model”** Expert Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, stating that children can learn violence from screens, warned, “It is important what kind of content children and young people are exposed to. In children who watch such content, aggressive behaviors and a tendency towards violence may emerge through modeling. Violence can be reflected in children's behavior. It can lead to consequences such as negatively affecting school success in children, conflict in peer relationships, engaging in behaviors unacceptable by society, and developing aggressive attitudes.” **They were reenacting violent scenes** Expert Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü stated that the impact of the series “Squid Game,” which was among the most-watched on a platform last year, on children and young people was a subject of debate, saying, “This series was quite popular especially among school-aged children. Children started playing some of the games depicted in the series among themselves and reenacting violent scenes.” Expert Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü, stating that violent scenes begin to desensitize individuals to violence and make it ordinary, said, “Violent programs should not be included in television schedules. Parents and adults have certain responsibilities to prevent this situation. Caregivers should not leave children in front of screens for long periods to pass the time, and screen use should be limited. It is necessary to control what kind of content children watch and to protect them from programs that will negatively affect their development. According to research, children who watch violent cartoons are more likely to fight than their peers and have difficulty coping with intense emotions.” **Violent content leads to loss of control** Warning that “watching violent series and films, although seen as a form of entertainment, has harmful effects,” Expert Clinical Psychologist İnci Nur Ülkü concluded her words as follows: “There are some studies conducted on the brains of individuals exposed to violent content. One study revealed that young people exposed to violent video games struggled with attention, decision-making, and self-control, and also showed weaknesses in recognizing, feeling, and managing emotions.” --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/how-do-violence-and-horror-themed-tv-series-affect-our-psychology*
