## Özet

Experts, stating that war causes serious devastation in children's spiritual world, say that it is important to speak openly and in a way that the child can understand.

## İçerik

Pointing out that adolescents can also be affected by war news, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Asst. Prof. Melek Gözde Luş said, “They may ask political questions. They may want to compare their own views with their parents' views and even want to argue.” Emphasizing that speaking to children in a correct, understandable, and reassuring language is critical in reducing their anxieties, Asst. Prof. Luş noted that parents listening to their children without judgment and providing reassurance are the most important duties in protecting the mental health of both young and adolescent children.

Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialist Asst. Prof. Melek Gözde Luş from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information on how children and adolescents are affected both psychologically and physically by war environments and how parents can support their children during this process.

**The most important way to reduce a child's anxiety is to understand and reassure them! **

Asst. Prof. Melek Gözde Luş stated that one of the most important points when giving children information about war is to speak about the concepts in a relevant, clear, and understandable way for the child, and said, “It is very important for parents to express that they understand their child's concerns and to reassure them.”

Asst. Prof. Luş, stating that a child's anxieties can be significantly reduced in this way, said, “Protecting the child by watching the news with them, while certainly keeping them away from certain images, is among the most important duties of parents.”

**Adolescents can also be affected by war images and it can lead to long-term traumatic effects! **

Asst. Prof. Melek Gözde Luş noted that children, especially during adolescence, may be directly interested in news related to war, and said, “In fact, they may even ask political questions. They may want to compare their own views with their parents' views and even want to argue.”

Emphasizing that parents should talk to adolescents about these issues and not shy away from discussions, Asst. Prof. Luş continued:

“It is very important to listen to them, not to judge them, and if they do not think like them or express a different opinion, absolutely not to speak judgmentally. Adolescents can also be affected by these images, just like young children. Children living in war zones experience much more serious trauma. Various studies have proven that, like children exposed to violence, they also show certain post-traumatic symptoms that continue into adulthood. Therefore, they may need some therapies and treatments that might last for a very long time.”

**War causes serious devastation in children's spiritual world! **

Asst. Prof. Melek Gözde Luş, pointing out that children are not only psychologically affected in an environment of violence where even adults are horrified, remain in terror, and are severely impacted, said the following:

“In a war environment where children cannot access clean water, cannot access clean food, and where children, especially those under 5, face death due to hunger and thirst, the first priority is, of course, for children to be physically healthy, to survive, and to have access to clean water and food. However, in their spiritual world, just as in adults' spiritual world, war creates a significant devastating effect on children's spiritual world. Especially in children under 5, immediately after any violent event, certain negative symptoms such as restlessness, crying, overreacting to everything, belligerence, insomnia, non-compliance with parents' words, and rejecting everything are observed.”

**What is important is to give children correct information in a way they can understand!**

Asst. Prof. Melek Gözde Luş, stating that there is a difference between children aged 6 or after 7-8 and younger children, said, “As parents, we should never forget that children do not understand abstract concepts, that war is an abstract concept so they cannot make sense of it, and that they may ask about everything they see.”

Underlining that what is important is to give them correct information, to speak in a way they can understand, to speak in their language, and to reassure them, Asst. Prof. Luş concluded her words as follows:

“If a child feels that their parents understand them, they will feel safe, and thus their anxiety will greatly decrease.

This is actually also true during adolescence. As they begin to develop their own views, adolescents will want to discuss these issues as part of their personality development. They will want to express their own opinions. In fact, parents should listen to them without judgment; even if they don't approve or if it doesn't align with their own views, they should still listen without offending or rebuffing them. Even if there are points they disagree with, rather than correcting them, communicating in a way that simply shows they are there for them is, we can say, the best parental function.”
