## Özet

Experts state that hugging is not just an emotional intimacy, but a powerful biological regulator that directly affects the nervous system.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol stated that hugging increases oxytocin release, saying, 'At the same time, the level of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, begins to drop. Heart rate slows down, breathing deepens, and muscle tension decreases. In other words, hugging biologically takes the body out of 'alarm mode'.' Erol stated that especially during challenging times, hugging can have a calming effect even faster than verbal support, but emphasized that consent and trust are essential for this effect to occur. Erol pointed out that unwanted contact or contact that violates boundaries, on the contrary, can activate the stress system.

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about the neurobiological effects of hugging on January 21, World Hug Day.

**Hugging biologically takes the body out of 'alarm mode'!**

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol pointed out that although hugging may seem like a simple touch, it has a very powerful regulatory effect on the brain and nervous system, stating, 'From a neurobiological perspective, hugging is one of the most fundamental stimuli that gives the human body the message 'you are safe'.'

Erol stated that during a hug, the release of certain neurochemicals, especially oxytocin, increases in the brain. She explained, 'Oxytocin is associated with feelings of bonding, trust, and calmness. At the same time, the level of cortisol, known as the stress hormone, begins to drop. With this shift in balance, the person feels calmer, more connected, and more regulated. Heart rate slows down, breathing deepens, and muscle tension decreases. In other words, hugging biologically takes the body out of 'alarm mode'.'

**The nervous system finds an opportunity to relax through hugging! **

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol, referring to the fact that hugging particularly activates the parasympathetic nervous system, said, 'This system is the body's rest and repair mode.'

Erol noted that the nervous system, which is constantly on alert in daily life, finds an opportunity to relax, even if for a short time, through hugging. She stated, 'That's why many people express feeling relaxed or better after a hug. This feeling is as biological as it is psychological.'

Hugging can have a calming effect even faster than verbal support during times of emotional distress!

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol emphasized that loneliness is not just an emotional state, saying, 'It is a process that increases the perception of threat in the brain. A decrease in physical contact weakens the brain's social safety signals.'

Erol stated that hugging, on the other hand, reactivates these signals, giving the person the message 'you are not alone,' and therefore, hugging can have a calming effect even faster than verbal support, especially during times of emotional distress.

**Unwanted contact or contact that violates boundaries can activate the stress system! **

Clinical Psychologist İpek Erol underlined that hugging is a fundamental regulator for the developing nervous system in children, saying, 'Safe and consistent physical contact contributes to the healthy functioning of a child's stress system. A child who is hugged feels that their emotions are recognized, and this experience supports the development of emotion regulation pathways in their brain.'

nErol stated that these children will better recognize their emotions and have stronger calming skills in later years, concluding her words as follows:

'Hugging is a powerful regulator that supports feelings of trust and calmness in a child's brain; however, for it to be effective and healthy, it must be considered with boundaries. Unwanted, forced, or sudden contact, on the contrary, can activate the stress system. In other words, the same behavior can be perceived as a 'threat' by the brain if there is no consent.

Consent comes first among the boundary principles of healthy hugging. A simple question like 'Can I hug you?' teaches respect for the child's body. Timing is also an important point. A child may not want to be hugged when they are experiencing intense anger, fear, or shame. In such situations, regulation first, then contact, is more appropriate. The duration and intensity of the hug are also important. Short and soft contact is generally safer for a child's nervous system. For a child who does not want to hug, options such as holding hands, sitting next to them, or making eye contact can be offered.

Hugging does not create the same psychological effect in every individual. Neurobiologically, the calming effect of hugging only emerges if the person feels safe. Unwanted contact or contact that violates boundaries, on the contrary, can activate the stress system. Therefore, consent, timing, and the relationship of trust established with the other person are determinant for hugging to be therapeutic.'
