Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, stating that physical contact is considered one of the fundamental elements for the healthy development of relationships, said, “In friendships, within families, and in romantic relationships, physical contact can lead to the reinforcement of intimacy and trust; it can facilitate the expression of love and attachment, provide emotional support, strengthen emotional bonds, and deepen relationships.” Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz emphasized that both couples and families should give importance to increasing physical contact, and on the other hand, it is necessary to respect the boundaries of the other person and incorporate physical contact into daily life naturally based on mutual consent.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NP Etiler Medical Center Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz made statements about the importance of physical contact in family, friendship, or romantic relationships.

It reduces stress levels, supports feelings of happiness…

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, defining physical contact as a state where people interact with each other in various forms such as hugging, handshakes, touching, or direct bodily contact, said, “Physical contact has a significant effect on strengthening individuals' emotional bonds and maintaining their social relationships. Moreover, its effects on psychological and emotional health are quite extensive.”

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, recalling research on physical contact, stated, “We observe that physical contact reduces stress levels, increases the secretion of the ‘bonding hormone’ called oxytocin, and generally supports the feeling of happiness. The oxytocin hormone strengthens social bonds by increasing feelings of trust and closeness in individuals and can act as an assisting factor in reducing emotional problems such as depression and anxiety. Furthermore, it can also trigger the release of endorphins in the body, reducing the sensation of pain and increasing overall well-being.”

Lack of physical contact can negatively affect relationships!

Addressing the role of physical contact in friendships, family, and romantic relationships, Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz said, “Physical contact plays an important role in friendships, family, and romantic relationships. It can be considered one of the fundamental elements for the healthy development of relationships. In both friendships, within families, and in romantic relationships, physical contact can lead to the reinforcement of intimacy and trust; it can facilitate the expression of love and attachment, provide emotional support, and strengthen emotional bonds, deepening relationships.”

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, stating that a lack of physical contact can have negative effects on relationships, said, “It can lead to an increase in emotional distance in relationships, a decrease in emotional warmth and closeness, an increase in concerns about mistrust and the solidity of the relationship, and the emergence of problems such as emotional development issues and low self-esteem.”

Different types of physical contact can carry different meanings…

Emphasizing that different types of physical contact have important and distinct effects in relationships, Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz said the following:

“For example, hugging strengthens emotional bonds and can intensify feelings of love and trust. This form of contact can provide relaxation by reducing stress and facilitates people receiving emotional support. Holding hands, on the other hand, can increase feelings of closeness and attachment, reinforces a sense of trust, and can provide emotional support. Kissing, in romantic relationships, can strengthen emotional and sexual bonds and increase the secretion of happiness hormones. These contacts can carry different meanings according to the type of relationship, cultural norms, and preferences, but generally, they have positive effects on human relationships and strengthen communication.”

Despite its positive effects, there should be boundaries!

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz stated that both couples and families should allocate time in their daily routines to increase physical contact and give importance to this matter, saying, “For example, creating small rituals such as making physical contact during the day can help strengthen emotional bonds and deepen communication. Furthermore, participating in activities focused on common interests, such as exercising together, dancing, or walking, can promote both emotional and physical closeness.”

Clinical Psychologist Uluğ Çağrı Beyaz, noting that although physical contact has positive effects, it should have boundaries, concluded his words as follows:

“When determining these boundaries, showing sensitivity in daily communication and naturally incorporating physical contact into daily life based on mutual consent is an important part of maintaining healthy boundaries. Trying to understand each individual's boundaries and comfort level, avoiding being uncomfortable, and aiming to clarify boundaries through open communication can strengthen trust and respect in relationships. Thus, physical contact can be increased healthily, and the bonds in relationships can be further deepened.”
