## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “There is a serious moral decay globally”**

Emphasizing that a civilization crisis is being experienced worldwide, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that global morality is eroding. Tarhan; “It is very important to discuss the topic of ‘Human, Sufi thought, and healing.’ This topic currently points to a disease, the civilization crisis we are experiencing globally. Not only in our own civilization's geography, but a civilization crisis is being experienced all over the world. There is a disease that has entered the popular psychiatry school created by this civilization crisis. It is called ‘California Syndrome.’ We can summarize California syndrome as follows: California syndrome is now a global syndrome. It first took shape in current California, but it is now valid all over the world. California syndrome has four main symptoms. These symptoms are: solutions from the Sufi world, a solution that can be a remedy for the current crisis of modernism, the civilization crisis. Because there is a serious moral decay globally. There is social decay, social collapse all over the world. Against this, especially since we are in the field of psychiatry, we see the direction young people are heading.”

## **“Man is the only being who knows he will die…”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, speaking about how humans are different from other living beings; “The first symptom of California syndrome is hedonism, pleasure-seeking. That is, those who make the pursuit of pleasure a reason for living. Current secular life says it consists only of worldly life and offers no alternatives regarding life after death. It disregards life after death. However, humans have metacognition genes. One of these metacognition genes is the gene for the search for meaning in humans. Humans are the only beings who ask the questions, ‘Why do I exist in this life? Where do I come from? Where am I going?’ No other living being is in search of meaning. Humans have a gene for seeking novelty. This gene has been identified. It is called the ‘screening novelty gene.’ This gene is more active in hyperactive individuals. This novelty-seeking gene means humans do not build their homes as they did a thousand years ago. A spider does the same. An ant does the same, but not humans. Humans are constantly looking for new things. The fourth gene, or rather, another of the metacognition genes, is the death, death awareness gene, the gene for perceiving death. That is, humans are currently the only beings who know they will die. Humans are the only ones who perceive the past and the future. No other living being beyond humans has regrets about the past or uncertainties about the future, nor do they feel anxiety about the future.”

## **“Three dangers await humanity”**

Tarhan, referring to the benefit of people taking precautions for future generations; “Currently, the biggest problem we see globally is that the United Nations even states that three dangers await humanity in the world. One is global inequality, income inequality. The second is the climate crisis. The third is described as loneliness. There is a large field study conducted by the BBC and the University of Manchester in England involving 50,000 people. It can be found online by searching ‘University of Manchester, BBC Loneliness’. There, the rate of those over 75 who say they are very lonely is 27%. The rate of those between 16-24 who say they are very lonely is 40%. Among young people. This is the opposite of what is expected. That is, young people should be social, but there is social isolation. There is digital isolation among young people. These young people have started to become more conformist, more self-centered, more self-focused in the future. In other words, if humanity does not take precautions within this, these generations cannot make our future better.”

## **Cemalnur Sargut: “Our soul needs nourishment”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector's Advisor Cemalnur Sargut, emphasizing the importance of Sufi thought, pointed out that people can nourish their souls and hearts if they learn Sufism. Sargut; “We nourish ourselves, our bodies, but our soul actually needs nourishment. Our existence needs nourishment to exist. For this, we must understand that God manifests himself to us every moment, but we do not realize it. He is a mercy to the worlds (rahmet-el lil âlemin). Why do we call rain a mercy? Because it rains equally everywhere and continuously. God's blessing constantly rains down on us. Where are we? Where are we right now? Which one do we feel? Which one makes us happy? Pains come, troubles come, but do you know what my observation is? If peace is not lost here despite pain and trouble, then it means we are feeling that mercy. It means we are in peace, within peace. Therefore, we must nourish ourselves first for our hearts, then for our bodies, and our souls. We must nourish our essence. The way to do this is through learning Sufism. We need to learn Sufism to understand why God approaches us, why God manifests us.”
