In this method, a diet program or restriction is not applied. The effect does not force the person's will.” Öztekin, who stated that the number of sessions is usually at least 10 and that session intervals affect the permanence of the treatment, pointed out that methods like ‘losing weight in one session’ have no scientific basis. Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about what hypnotherapy is, its difference from hypnosis, its application process, its effects, and particularly how it is used in eating disorders and weight management. **In hypnotherapy, treatment is aimed using the hypnosis technique! ** Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin stated that hypnotherapy is a psychotherapy method applied using the hypnosis technique, adding, “In the medical world, hypnotherapy is accepted as a psychotherapy method.” Öztekin, pointing out that hypnosis and hypnotherapy are not the same thing, said, “Hypnosis is the state of temporarily influencing an individual or group through words, gaze, and suggestion. During this process, the person's attention is focused on specific points, and the subconscious becomes more active. In hypnotherapy, although the hypnosis technique is utilized, the main purpose is treatment. It is mostly applied in psychiatric and mental illnesses, as well as in personal development areas.” ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/sssss-260303113757.jpg) **Everyone experiences a state of hypnosis unknowingly throughout their lives! ** Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin pointed out that every person has an innate ability to enter a hypnotic state, saying, “Everyone, including those who think they won't be hypnotized, experiences a state of hypnosis many times unknowingly throughout their lives.” Öztekin stated that a state of hypnotic focus can occur while watching a movie, listening to a speech, or watching fish in an aquarium, adding, “‘Road hypnosis’ seen during long journeys can be given as an example of this situation. A child absorbed in play with their toy becoming unresponsive to the outside world, or a person focusing intently on their work and not noticing their surroundings, are also similar states of focus.” **Since the area of effect of hypnosis is the brain, its effect is permanent! ** Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin noted that the number of hypnotherapy sessions depends on the problem to be solved, the individual's environment, the hypnotherapist's suggestions and therapy approach, the trust relationship established with the therapist, and the person's personality traits, stating, “At least 10 sessions are applied. It is especially recommended that the time between the first sessions not be too long.” Öztekin emphasized that starting with 2-3 sessions per week and extending the session intervals in the later stages is important for the treatment to be more effective and permanent, adding the following: “It is stated that since the area of effect of hypnosis is the brain, its effect is permanent. For example, during the weight loss process, concepts like ‘regime’ and ‘diet’ can create negative associations for the subconscious. The person feels forced to give up foods they like, and this situation often results in more weight gain after the diet. However, the causes of uncontrolled eating are hidden in the subconscious. Negative emotions such as stress, tension, anxiety, guilt, and anger can lead to excessive eating behavior.” **The goal is to conduct an effective treatment process with personalized suggestions! ** Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin stated that a detailed psychological evaluation is conducted in the first session with clients who apply with an eating disorder diagnosis or complaint, saying, “The individual's basic personality traits, family, lifestyle, relationships, past traumas, existing fears and anxieties, and obsessions are addressed. Since different behaviors and triggers can be seen in each individual with an eating disorder, detailed questions regarding eating behavior are asked.” Öztekin, pointing out that in obesity cases, it is evaluated when the eating disorder started, at what age it emerged, which foods increase loss of control, at what times of the day it intensifies, and whether habits such as smoking, alcohol, coffee, or tea accompany this behavior, concluded his words as follows: “The aim is to identify the individual's specific eating behaviors, prepare personalized suggestions, and conduct an effective treatment process. Hypnotherapy aims to influence eating behavior. In this method, a diet program or restriction is not applied. The effect is achieved not by forcing the individual's will, but by correcting incorrect encodings in the brain and eliminating unhealthy impulses through suggestions given under hypnotic influence. When excessive and uncontrolled eating behavior is eliminated, the goal is for the individual to acquire normal eating habits and lose weight in a healthy, regular manner. Since eating disorders are considered a psychological problem, solving the problem with psychological methods contributes to the permanence of the weight lost. Finally, it should be remembered that methods presented with slogans like ‘lose weight in one session’ are not realistic and have no scientific basis.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.87702](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.87702) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/hypnotherapy-recodes-behaviors*
