Dr. Ali Rahimi, who primarily advises caution to prevent fish bones from getting stuck in the throat while eating fish, states that in such a situation, one should first remain calm and not panic. Dr. Ali Rahimi recommends consulting an ENT or gastroenterology specialist without delay, instead of resorting to methods like hitting the back, drinking water, or eating bread, if the fish bone does not come out with coughing. Dr. Ali Rahimi shared important advice regarding what to do if a fish bone gets stuck in the throat. **Remain calm, do not panic** Stating that one should first be careful to prevent fish bones from getting stuck in the throat while eating fish, ENT Specialist Op. Dr. K. Ali Rahimi said, “In some cases, a fish bone may be swallowed unintentionally and get stuck in the throat. In such situations, the person should first remain calm and not panic. The body reflexively coughs to clear the throat and expel foreign objects. If the fish bone, which is attempted to be expelled by coughing, does not come out with this method, the person needs to consult expert doctors in their field, in the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) or gastroenterology departments.” **Primitive methods should not be used to remove the fish bone** Op. Dr. K. Ali Rahimi stated that the fish bone can usually get stuck in the tonsils and can even reach the front of the vocal cords, and continued his words as follows: “Furthermore, it can also get stuck in the windpipe or esophagus, and in such cases, serious complications can arise. When a fish bone gets stuck in the throat, since it can only be expelled through coughing, primitive methods should absolutely not be used, and a doctor should be consulted. We can say that attempting to remove it with one's own methods and manual intervention is dangerous. When it gets stuck in a part connected to the throat, its removal by a doctor is a simple procedure. Therefore, it is not correct for a person to try to remove the fish bone manually. The doctor can see where the fish bone is lodged with an endoscope. Once its location is determined, it can be removed with various methods. What is important here is the absolute necessity for the fish bone or any foreign object to be examined by a specialist ENT doctor. If the fish bone gets into the esophagus or windpipe, a gastroenterologist needs to enter the esophagus with an endoscope, or a thoracic surgeon needs to enter the lung and search those areas.” **Do not attempt to remove the fish bone by hitting the back** Emphasizing that one should not intervene when a fish bone gets stuck in someone's throat, Op. Dr. K. Ali Rahimi said, “Hitting a person's back, drinking water, or eating bread to prevent the fish bone from going down into the esophagus or windpipe is dangerous and not recommended. Drinking water or eating bread will push the fish bone downwards, but the fish bone needs to be expelled through the mouth, not pushed downwards.” **If it doesn't come out with coughing, a doctor should be consulted** Stating that if a fish bone gets stuck in the throat and cannot be expelled through the mouth by coughing, one should visit a doctor without delay, Op. Dr. K. Ali Rahimi said, “The fish bone might get into the windpipe and esophagus. This situation can lead to serious problems in the body.
