## Özet
Polluted air negatively affects the elderly and children the most
## İçerik
Stating that the lungs are the organ most affected by the intense fog and air pollution that emerge in winter months, Anesthesia and Reanimation Specialist Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said that children and the elderly are most likely to be affected by polluted air due to both their low lung capacities and potentially inadequate immune systems. Recommending the mandatory use of masks outdoors to reduce contact with airborne particles or gases, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan warned, “If leaving home has become a necessity, you must wear a mask for your health.”
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Anesthesia and Reanimation Specialist Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan made evaluations regarding the effects of foggy and especially polluted air on lung diseases.
If we don't get enough oxygen, we poison ourselves
Stating that the lungs are the organ most affected by polluted air, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said, “Polluted air is unfortunately the price of the comfort we have achieved. It is a serious negative consequence brought into our lives by both industrial development and the easier way of life we call urbanization. The organ most affected by polluted air is the lungs. We are living beings who need air and oxygen. Oxygen is essential for us, and air is the only place we can get it. If we cannot get enough oxygen in the air, and moreover, if we encounter highly toxic and irritant gases and particles just for the sake of breathing, it means we are poisoning and sickening ourselves.”
Polluted air negatively affects lung diseases
Stating that polluted air has negative effects on many lung diseases, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said, “Those with lung diseases are most affected by air pollution. Patients who have had pneumonia due to Covid-19 can be negatively affected. Recurrent lung infections can occur due to air pollution. Patients may present to the hospital with complaints such as irritated airways, inability to breathe, and a feeling of suffocation. A child patient or an adult individual monitored for allergic lung complaints due to air pollution may also experience problems. Inhaled exhaust gases, sticky particles brought by fog, or any household material, such as floor polishes, deodorants, and perfumes, will further worsen lung diseases. The outcome of this is hospital care, pneumonia, and airway obstruction. It can also lead to respiratory support in intensive care.” he warned.
What should lung patients do in such weather?
Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan also offered recommendations on how lung patients should act in such weather, saying, “A lung problem we have might be a chronic process linked to air pollution, or it might be a condition that arose independently of air pollution. For example, you might have had lung cancer surgery, or have an asthma diagnosis, or have children with allergic airways. First and foremost, you must pay attention to your lifestyle. Air pollution is actually a chronic process. We can be poisoned in both outdoor and indoor environments. However, what we are discussing now are acute situations, especially those caused by winter and exacerbated by specific conditions like heating. Exposure must be reduced.” he warned.
Areas where smoking is common should be avoided
Emphasizing that people with any lung problem, a diagnosed condition, or a past illness should avoid areas with high exhaust gas, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said, “These individuals should stay away from train stations, thermal power plants, crowded areas, and places where a lot of smoking occurs. Your home and living conditions should be somewhat further away from factories and traffic gases that cause air pollution. Having environments open to clean air is important. Beyond that, you need to be very careful with your fuel choices and heating conditions. Your cooking conditions and the gases you use for cooking must be chosen correctly. However, these refer to the more chronic process. For example, there are low-calorie coals we use for heating. These emit sulfur gas, which is a very toxic substance. We already notice it in the city; it’s an extremely irritating, distinct, and pungent smell. We need to stay away from these. The right fuel is something that governs our lifespan. Small benefits can cause problems that will affect our lifespan. If possible, let’s stay away from traffic conditions and crowds. Especially concerning our fuel choices, let’s not hesitate to be careful and show diligence.”
It is recommended not to go out in polluted air
Noting that air pollution is a situation that needs to be monitored, and that ministries and public health experts continuously conduct measurements regarding it, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said, “When the particle count exceeds a certain value, or the toxic gas ratio rises above a certain level, a warning is issued. This is the method used in many developed countries today, and their first advice to people is not to go out. For example, they stop outdoor sports activities and encourage children and the elderly to stay indoors.”
Children and the elderly should be protected from polluted air
Stating that there are two important groups that need to be protected from polluted air, namely children and the elderly, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said, “Both their lung capacities may be low and their immune systems may be inadequate. Especially in the elderly, if chronic circulatory system and neurological problems are added, we advise these individuals to be careful in places with high air pollution and to stay indoors as much as possible. We request media outlets to give importance to warnings they issue regarding air pollution.”
Masks must be used outdoors
Recommending the use of masks to reduce contact with airborne particles or gases, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said, “If leaving home has become a necessity, you must wear a mask for your health. N95 masks are recommended for these situations. A mask is a very important protective device. One should stay away from outdoors, the work environment should be constantly ventilated, and appropriate filters should be used for air conditioners in air-conditioned environments.”
Lung capacity can be increased with appropriate breathing exercises
Noting that lung capacity can be increased, Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan said, “For this, I recommend that patients with chronic lung problems or individuals with diagnoses stay away from such environments, pay attention to their bronchodilator treatments, and avoid going outside. However, appropriate breathing exercises and measured sports greatly increase lung capacity. Especially walks or upper body exercises that increase lung capacity help open existing blocked airways. Thus, while changing the surface related to toxic substances, it will help healthy lungs to become active and more oxygen to reach our body and brain.”
Prof. Dr. Anış Arıboğan also noted that there are blowing devices called triflo that help increase lung capacity, stating, “These are simple but very effective applications. You can increase lung capacity by blowing into them. You can learn how to use them from physiotherapists or online. Meditation is also a method. Because deep breathing exercises in meditation are very powerful applications that increase lung capacity.”
