Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of [Üsküdar Üniversitesi](https://uskudar.edu.tr), made evaluations on TRT RADIO 1 regarding the importance of loneliness, unhappiness, and family relationships, which came to the agenda with the suicide of Furkan Celep, who ended his life in Darıca after a note he wrote on social media.

## **Investing in happiness is necessary**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that people need to invest in happiness to learn how to be happy, and he pointed out the importance of the relationship established with parents. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said the following:

“You look at this young person's past; he was a gentle child. He wouldn't even hurt an ant. Why did such a person do something like this? He doesn't use alcohol or drugs. It appears he was alone. He has a statement saying he couldn't find anyone to confide in. When it comes to friendship, it's often said that parents can't be friends. But confiding in a father is friendship. Confiding in an elder, telling them things, sharing negativity, being able to talk is friendship. What we understand by friendship is important. Let a father fulfill his fatherly role; he only has one father, but he will have many friends. Is it not possible for someone to spend time with their child and share life without abandoning their fatherly role? This falls within the definition of friendship.”

## **Fathers should make their love felt**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that in our culture, fathers often keep a distance in their relationships with their children, adding, “This situation is unfortunately very common. A father loves his child from a distance; he doesn't hug them or pick them up. This is not in our religion; it has become a tradition. He truly loves his child, but there is no emotional expression. This creates a perception in the child that they are not loved. Some things need to be done to address this perception. The child needs to be made to feel valued and important.”

## **Self-perception is important**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that individuals have levels of self-perception and stated that self-perception is important in the formation of a person's self-confidence, adding the following:

“There is the self that is, the self that is imagined, and the self that ought to be. Within this self, individuals with low self-perception see themselves as less valuable than they are. These individuals need three times more appreciation, praise, and words of approval than others. Their behaviors and efforts, not their personalities, should be praised. When this is done, a person's sense of belonging increases, they feel valued, and they move away from loneliness. This reminded me of a banner young people carried in Prague. On the banners unfurled during the march, they asked, ‘We have no purpose to strive for in life, why should we live?’ It seems that the young person was presented with the idea that having a house and a car is enough as a purpose. This purpose does not satisfy a person's psychological nature. They also need to feel that they are not alone while engaging in these behaviors. Perhaps they are not depressed, they haven't gone to a clinic for treatment, but they haven't found happiness either. When they are not happy, they might say, 'I'd rather die than live like this for five or ten years.'”

## **It is not right to generalize young people**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that every young person has different interests, saying, “For every young person, it's often thought that when you say 'youth,' sports come to mind. Sports are important, of course, but sports should not be presented as the only option for everyone. Some people can find happiness in sports, but others cannot. This young person was someone who thought about the future and questioned things. Projects that appeal to these individuals also need to be developed. Young people should not only engage in sports but also learn science, do philosophy, and research. Is this young person less valuable than a young person who plays sports? We need to raise young people who develop not only body muscles but also mind muscles.”

## **We must raise young people who know the meaning and purpose of life**

Stating, “Let's not raise uncultured youth,” Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said the following:

“Reducing youth to sports is a perception error offered by popular culture. We, as a society, have bought into this perception. We need to raise cultured young people, young people who know the meaning and purpose of life. The greatest weapon of this era is the weapon of knowledge. Let's raise young people who possess the weapon of knowledge. Our ancestors did not pursue world domination but rather high ideals. When I look at films made about youth, they are always about violence and fighting. These certainly have their place. But we need to show young people things that will contribute to their lives lifelong, things that will generate ideas. Let's set a goal for young people to be like Edison, not just to be leaders. If we don't learn the lessons from the West's mistakes now, we will experience the same problems that young people in the West face thirty years later.”

## **Wisdom education should be given**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that wisdom education should be given to Generation Z, saying, “When we say wisdom education, we mean not just knowledge, but also teaching them how to transform that knowledge into happiness. If a person achieves wisdom, they can be at peace with themselves and also make others happy. They don't just pursue their own happiness. These things are not learned spontaneously. Young people need to be taught these. If this young person had also received wisdom education, they would not have found the solution in suicide.”

## **If you have a purpose, happiness follows**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that having a purpose in life also brings happiness, saying, “Happiness is like a colorful shadow. If you try to catch it, it flees. You will have a purpose, and you will do things in that direction; happiness comes by following it. One of the most important studies in the science of happiness is the principle of hope. A philosophy of life that will not lead to despair needs to be created. The second is the principle of purpose. There are concrete and abstract purposes in life. Concrete purposes are a house or a car. These do not satisfy a person. Happiness becomes dependent on external causes. But in an abstract purpose, there is being a good person, achieving beautiful things, and leaving behind traces of appreciation and praise. When this happens, one sees that what they have done has not been in vain. Modernism only gives us concrete goals. A young person who knows how to have abstract goals struggles with difficulties more easily. The best method to combat evil is to increase good deeds. If we teach these to a young person, they will not commit violence, nor will they wish for their friend to get a low grade on an exam. Globally, scientific research related to the science of happiness is being conducted on these topics. These exist in our culture, but we are slowly losing them.”

## **Evil spreads five times faster than good**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that communication technology has accelerated life, but the first thing to benefit from this fast-flowing life is the viruses of evil, stating, “The ability of evil to spread is five times greater than good. It has been observed in scientific experiments that lies spread five times faster than truth. Therefore, these have a spontaneous spreading characteristic. This is called behavioral entropy. This is the second law of thermodynamics. In this law, if you don't heat a house, it gets cold. Cold is the absence of heat. Darkness is the absence of light. Evil is the absence of good. Therefore, we must make increasing good a philosophy of life.”

## **Live right, be happy**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that one of the most important principles in happiness is living right, and he said the following:

“If I live right, I will be happy. Live right, be happy. We need to be able to do this. We need to teach how to live in schools. You know the right side of report cards; that part should not remain merely formal. Not everyone can be rich, not everyone can be famous, not everyone can be handsome or beautiful, but everyone can be a good person. At the end of life, all physical beauties acquired disappear, but the good deeds a person fills their saddlebag with remain both behind them and become the most valuable material for them in eternal life. It is not just a worldly investment but also an investment for after death. When we look at all divine teachings, all religions advise young people and individuals to intend to do good things as a purpose. Intention is very important. Intention is such an emotion that if someone has good intentions, those good intentions activate mirror neurons in the brain, and the mirror neurons of the other party are activated. Chemicals related to positive emotions are also secreted in their brain. Good intentions have the power to persuade. In the science of persuasion, it used to be said, 'Act a role now, but persuade the other party.' But now, if you are going to persuade the other party, you must first believe it yourself. If you believe, you can persuade. That's why sincerity has now become the most valuable neuroscientific knowledge with a biological basis. Intention is very important for this reason. After all, it is mirror neurons that make us human.”

## **Children need to be made to feel valuable**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan gave advice to parents on communicating with children and young people, saying, “Families should be active listeners and make the child feel that they are not alone. Let's praise the child's behavior and efforts, not their personality. Let them feel valuable. The duty of parents is not to make the child happy, but to prepare them for life. If they do these things, they will already be happy. They will travel together on the bus of life. The family is a bus that has embarked on this journey. Those on this journey should not just think of themselves. It is necessary to act with a 'we' consciousness, not an 'I' consciousness.”
