## Özet

Experts state that rapid weight loss efforts and restrictive diets can yield short-term results, but can negatively affect health in the long run.

## İçerik

Noting that rapidly lost weight is often regained and complicates the process, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu said, “Most of the content shared on social media is based on personal experiences. It does not include a scientific evaluation. Furthermore, every individual's metabolism is different.”

İspiroğlu pointed out that healthy weight loss is only possible with balanced nutrition and sustainable lifestyle changes, and also emphasized that maintaining body composition, not just the number on the scale, is important in weight loss.

Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu, Nutrition and Diet Specialist at Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, provided information on the mistakes made in weight loss attempts and the paths to follow.

**Rapidly lost weight is usually regained at the same speed!**

Emphasizing that the biggest mistake many people trying to lose weight make is trying to speed up the process, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu said, “Seeing changes in a short time is appealing, but the body is not suitable for such rapid change. Rapidly lost weight is often regained at the same speed, and this situation further complicates the process.”

Reminding that the weight loss process is not just a physical process, İspiroğlu said, “An approach that is dissatisfied with one's body and constantly critical cannot be sustainable. The goal should not be to ignore or punish the body; it should be to understand it and move it to a better point. The expectation of quick results and the search for easy solutions increase the tendency towards such wrong methods.”

**The process should be managed not only through weight loss but also by preserving body composition!**

Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu pointed out that although rapid weight loss and overly restrictive dietary approaches may seem to yield short-term results, they can pose certain risks to the body, and stated the following:

“Muscle loss, a decrease in metabolic rate, and hormonal imbalances are among the most common problems encountered in this process. Therefore, it is important to manage the process not only through weight loss but also by preserving body composition.

At this point, the number on the scale should not be seen as a sole target. Because the quality of weight loss is at least as important as its quantity. A decrease in fat mass, preservation of muscle mass, and maintenance of metabolic balance are fundamental indicators of a healthy process. Therefore, instead of focusing solely on the number, the change in the body should be evaluated holistically.”

**Detox and similar practices do not provide permanent results, they only offer temporary effects! **

Referring to the recent widespread use of practices such as water diets, detoxes, edema-reducing teas, and slimming coffees on social media, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu said, “None of these approaches alone provide permanent weight loss. Even if there are short-term changes, this often does not mean fat loss.”

Noting that healthy weight loss is not possible without regular and balanced nutrition, İspiroğlu stated, “Such products or practices do not replace the process; they only create a temporary effect. Most of the content shared on social media is based on personal experiences. It does not include a scientific evaluation. Furthermore, every individual's metabolism is different. Therefore, a method that seems effective for one person may not yield the same result for another. The same approach cannot work for every individual. Unconscious application of such approaches can pose health risks. It is necessary to approach practices seen on social media cautiously and plan the process in a personalized and sustainable way.”

**What is permanent is a lifestyle change!**

Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu, Nutrition and Diet Specialist, pointed out that weight loss occurs when the body expends more energy than it consumes, and said, “However, what is important is to establish this balance sustainably, not short-term. Adequate and balanced nutrition, preserving muscle mass, and organizing daily life accordingly are the most important parts of the process.”

Underlining that the weight loss process is not only about what you eat but also about habits, İspiroğlu concluded her words as follows:

“Setting realistic goals, not rushing the process, and making small but lasting changes yield much more effective results in the long run.

One of the most common mistakes encountered in the clinic is unnecessarily restricting nutrition. While this approach, taken with the desire for rapid weight loss, yields short-term results, it is not sustainable in the long run. Recently popular, scientifically weak, and overly restrictive dietary approaches also carry similar risks. Although they may provide short-term weight loss, they can negatively affect health in the long run. Therefore, instead of focusing on quick results in the weight loss process, it is necessary to progress sustainably. Because what is permanent is a lifestyle change.”
