Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, made evaluations on the topic of resource management during the 'Evlilik Okulu' (Marriage School) program broadcast on Akra FM.

## **The Desire to Possess is a Fundamental Emotion**

Stating that shopping is very enjoyable and everyone wants to do it, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “When people go to a shopping mall or another place, they want to buy everything. The desire to possess and own property is a fundamental emotion in everyone. One must learn to balance this desire with needs. This naturally happens in childhood. If one doesn't learn it in childhood, people eventually learn it through trial and error.”

## **Financial Literacy Education is Provided in Many Developed Countries**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that financial literacy education is provided in many developed countries, saying, “When someone receives financial literacy education, they are asked questions like ‘What is a budget? What is the philosophy of resource management?’ The goal is to grow resources through input modulation and output modulation, meaning input and output control. If output is reduced, input is increased. Resources, or the budget, grow larger, and investment power increases. Contrary to popular belief, in our culture, there is a saying, ‘It is easy to earn money, but difficult to spend money.’ In reality, spending is easy now, but smart spending is difficult. It’s easy when you buy whatever you want and do whatever you wish.”

## **The Most Important Element in Resource Management is Setting Goals**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that the first children born into a household generally acquire everything easily and continued his words as follows:

“They acquire things easily; sometimes, it can happen with the youngest child too. Generally, older children are pressured, while younger ones are treated more tolerantly. As a solution to this, we say that justice begins with the family. When we research the root of the word 'economy' (iktisat) in Arabic in resource management, we see that it comes from the root 'maksat' (purpose). If a person has a purpose, they invest accordingly. The most important element in resource management is setting goals and acting purposefully. For example, if the house is rented, there should be short and medium-term goals like investing to get rid of the rent. According to those goals, family members will say, ‘we need to put aside this much money.’ When a person feels the urge to spend, they should be able to say no to themselves by saying, ‘I want this, but I don’t need it; I have similar things at home.’ To be able to say this, a purpose is needed.”

## **After Purpose, Impulse Control Works in Individuals**

Stating that impulse control works in individuals after setting a purpose, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “When we look at the degree of shopping addiction, we most frequently encounter impulse control disorder in individuals. These individuals have attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. These patients also have 3 main symptoms: one is attention deficit, another is excessive activity, and the third is impulse control disorder. These individuals cannot control their desires, urges, and impulses. This is generally learned up to adolescence. After adolescence, the person needs to learn impulse control, but there is a concept called prolonged adolescence. The person says, ‘I regret it, but I can't help myself.’ We usually encounter this situation in prolonged adolescence. The person is well-intentioned but has not been able to grow up the child within them. This situation can occur in children raised particularly pampered at home.”

## **Parents Must Establish Consistent Discipline**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that children naturally choose what they like, saying, “If the mother enforces discipline here, but the father applies loose discipline, the child will choose the loose discipline. Both parents need to establish consistent discipline. Strict discipline is also harmful here. Authoritarianism backfires. Loose discipline also leads to loss.”

## **Shopping is Like a Type of Addiction**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that addiction was previously always defined as a lack of tolerance and continued his words as follows:

“Addiction is a dysfunction of the brain's control center. The person cannot control pleasure with their impulses. Shopping is like a type of addiction. For example, do they do it to reduce stress? When we ask, ‘Why do they shop?’ some people shop to reduce stress. When that happens, it becomes a pleasure. They get upset about an event, get angry about something, go shopping, feel relieved, and come home. Sometimes they don't even open what they bought. They shopped but not according to need. In such situations, spouses sometimes save money from the household budget without letting the other know. It happens, but it’s actually behavior that weakens trust. An open, transparent relationship is more important here. Someone says, ‘I will manage the household budget,’ and then complains, ‘there’s no milk left, no eggs left at home.’ But they are trying to do or buy something else and are looking for ways to do it. After a while, they start lying. This kind of behavior can eventually lead to deceiving others. That's why people go bankrupt from credit card debts. The other spouse should remind the partner making such mistakes of their responsibilities, but not in front of the child. They should fix the problem together. If this approach doesn’t solve the problem, they should fix it with the help of arbitrators.”

## **Humans Have a Rule**

Emphasizing that during impulse control training, individuals should not be seen as adolescents or children, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “A person might be a university graduate, but their impulse control skills might not be developed. Perhaps they have hyperactivity or attention deficit. If so, medication might also be necessary. For instance, if they drive dangerously in traffic, don't follow rules at work, and exhibit similar behaviors, it can also be observed that they generally adhere to rules in matters they consider important, quite the opposite. They might act disregardingly in matters they don't deem important. Humans have a rule. This rule is taught in thought management and entrepreneurship training. If a person devotes 85 minutes to the task they are doing, they should devote 15 minutes to thinking about the task they are doing. They can reflect on their work and self-criticize. In such cases, individuals who follow this rule eventually become visionary. They have future projections. Their strategic goals, or purposes, are clear. They make their investments and strategic accumulations accordingly.”

## **A Visionary Person Learns More Quickly**

Stating that a strategic goal is an ego ideal for a person in life, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “A person needs to be visionary. A visionary person learns more, has a greater sense of responsibility, has high motivation, and makes fewer mistakes. That person can eventually become a master or a chief in their work. It's the same in life. In quality management, businesses' vision, mission, and quality values are always determined according to these. The company progresses according to these. This is time management, resource management. This is also valid in budget management. If a person cannot manage with good intentions, they should seek expert support.”

## **Capital Should Be Allocated to Raising Good Children**

Emphasizing that raising a good person is much more important than becoming a manager somewhere, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “To raise them, capital needs to be allocated to the child. Instead of giving advice, one must be a good example, and instead of giving commands, one must offer options to the child. The most important thing in resource management is being able to make fair allocations. Fair allocation is important in this regard: if there is a purpose when managing money, and that purpose is clear, you allocate accordingly. The purpose is clear, there is an agreed-upon purpose. Then justice can be ensured in common allocation, but if there is no common purpose, common justice cannot be ensured. If there is unity in the goal, unity can also emerge in the methods.”

## **To Be Fair, One Must Be Accountable**

Stating that for justice to be established, the defined goals must be correct, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “Justice is also shaped accordingly. Because absolute justice is also a kind of oppression. There is no absolute justice in this world. Absolute justice exists when it is combined with the afterlife. Because in this world, there is evil, there is good. Equality and justice are not the same in this world. When a person forms the concept of justice, a life philosophy emerges. If that person's life philosophy is capital-centric, if they say that money is the greatest value, then money is their sacred. Their sacred is ego. Their justice is also parallel to that. For a person to be fair, they must have a sense of accountability.”

## **It is Accountability, Not Good Intentions, That Protects a Person**

Stating that it is a person's accountability, not their good intentions, that protects them, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, “A person needs to ask themselves, ‘Have I wronged anyone, or have I not?’ Even in love within the family, there must be justice. None of us are flawless. If we are not flawless, we can make that mistake, but in family matters, it is necessary to agree on the concept of justice. Justice here means being able to plan according to future needs.”
