## **“The most ideal medical practice is to focus on protection and prevention”**

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, drawing attention to the importance of protective and preventive treatments, said; “Mental health professionals have four basic areas of work. One is curative medicine, a clinic that treats depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. This is a difficult and costly work for both the state and physicians. The most ideal medical practice here is to focus on protection and prevention. When a person shows some preliminary symptoms, it is necessary to take precautions by immediately identifying risk groups with early diagnosis to prevent them from becoming ill. Protection is primary prevention. Prevention is secondary prevention. In primary prevention, efforts are made to determine what can be done to keep healthy people from getting sick. There is also tertiary prevention, which examines what needs to be done to prevent the disease from recurring after a person has recovered from it. All three must go hand in hand. Among these, what is of golden value is lifestyle, learning the correct lifestyle. Studies in recent years show that 60-70% of diseases are related to lifestyle errors. That is, from obesity to gastrointestinal diseases, heart diseases, and mental health disorders, all are observed to be related to lifestyle, eating habits, sitting, standing, moving, entertainment habits, and also the ability to establish healthy communication with people, solve problems, and manage stress. Scientific studies show that 60-70% of diseases are preventable. Therefore, more importance is given to preventive mental health studies.”

## **“A stress-free life is not possible”**

Tarhan, stating that one must know oneself while progressing towards a goal, said; “It is very important for a person to know themselves, to distinguish their strengths, weaknesses, threats, and opportunities when moving towards a goal. When one can do this, they can say ‘no’ to thoughts and risks related to illness. They can say ‘no’ to addiction. Various safe behavior skills are being taught to people. People are working on anger management, emotion regulation control, self-observation, self-knowledge, then self-management, and then self-awareness studies. These individuals become resilient to illness. In other words, a kind of strengthening of the psychological immune system. This is called psychological resilience. That is, it is translated as psychological resilience. In fact, it means gaining psychological flexibility. You adapt in the face of stress, learn things, and return to your former state. You experience a trauma that develops you by strengthening. You turn the life events and stresses you experience into opportunities instead of threats. Because a stress-free life is not possible. If only it were, but life means embarking on a journey, it means stress, working, going to school. We will not be afraid of manageable stress.” he stated.

## **“Investing in psychological resilience is necessary”**

Tarhan, describing the ways to manage stresses encountered in life, said; “There is a way to manage stress in every life event. Life events, what we call stress, come like a flood. In this situation, people who panic lament, ‘Where did this flood come from?’ Or some say ‘the sunken fish goes sideways’ and let themselves be carried by the current. What does a smart person do? They find a log, get on it, and use its energy in the flood to reach their own goal. It’s the same in life events. This needs to be learned; investment in psychological resilience is necessary. We can also call this strengthening our psychological immune system. Its equivalent in general medicine is strengthening the immune system. That is, it is called non-invasive treatments. That is, before surgery, the focus is first on strengthening a person’s immune system to see if ‘they can defeat this disease’. The immune system is strengthened. If it doesn’t improve that way, then surgeries and heavy treatments come into play. The same applies to mental illnesses and mental states. The ideal is to strive for people not to get sick. Actually, it’s very simple; for example, if one knows hygiene rules to prevent physical health issues, if one knows cleanliness, brushing teeth, taking care of oneself, many diseases would pass by, but if not, microbes enter, progress, and it’s too late. Psychological hygiene, in a way, we teach this to people. This is also not very difficult.” he concluded.
