## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, Founding Rector of Üsküdar University, participated in the Munzur Science Path event organized by Munzur University. In the online program, Tarhan made striking statements under the title 'Education of Emotions: Living in Harmony with Yourself and Your Environment'. Noting that managing our emotions is like managing a chemistry laboratory in our brain, Tarhan underlined that lack of empathy is one of the most prominent indicators of emotional intelligence deficiency.**

## **The brain is not only a thinking organ but also a feeling one…**

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating in the program, which was attended with interest by the academic staff of Munzur University, that as a person matures, they will better maintain the balance between logic and emotion, said; “The concept of emotion was generally seen as a subject for poets, literary figures, and theologians until the 90s. Even philosophy dealt with this subject. However, in the 1995s, a revolution occurred in the fields of science and psychology. The initiator of this revolution was Antonio Damasio, a Portuguese-American neuroscientist. Damasio has a book called 'Descartes' Error'. You know Descartes’ saying, 'I think, therefore I am.' Damasio, in his research on the human brain, revealed that the brain is not only a thinking organ but also a feeling one. He identified the structures in the brain related to emotions and presented evidence for them. This information is still in the mentioned book. Those working in psychology must read this book. 'Descartes' Error' is a beneficial work for everyone. With this book as a reference, the concept of emotional intelligence emerged. Just like logical intelligence, the existence of emotional and social intelligence was accepted. In fact, educational psychologist Howard Gardner developed the theory of multiple intelligences in the 1980s. According to this theory, intelligence is not singular but plural; it is not fixed but a developable characteristic. In other words, it is not determined at birth, but can develop. Logical intelligence is related to the left brain and encompasses processes such as logic, reasoning, analysis, calculation, and speech. Emotional intelligence, on the other hand, is more related to the right brain; emotions, excitements, music, art, and aesthetics are associated with this area. The prefrontal cortex establishes a balance between logic and emotions. As a person matures, they better create the balance between logic and emotion,” he began his words.

## **“Managing our emotions is like managing the chemistry laboratory in our brain”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the importance of medium and long-term happiness, said; “Managing our emotions is like managing the chemistry laboratory in our brain. The person who best manages the chemistry laboratory in their brain is the most peaceful person. However, happiness and peace are not the same thing. This is related to our emotions. Aristotle, 2400 years ago, divided happiness into two: pleasure happiness and meaning happiness. Pleasure happiness is short-term and tangible. Meaning happiness, on the other hand, is medium and long-term; a person becomes happy when they produce meaning. Aristotle says that meaning happiness is the ideal. Today, its equivalent in the brain has also been found. Pleasure happiness is related to dopamine, and meaning happiness is related to serotonin. When serotonin decreases, people enter depression; when there is a problem with dopamine, a person becomes prone to addiction. Because dopamine is secreted, its effect ends in a short time, and the body wants it again. Dopamine is the chemical of pleasure. Serotonin, on the other hand, is related to meaningful happiness. The brain requires some effort and struggle to produce it. Today, there is a capitalist system that prioritizes pleasure happiness. Modernism, with its understanding of happiness offered especially to young people, has actually brought humanity back to the pleasure happiness that Aristotle talked about. However, people need meaning happiness. A happiness that requires thinking in the medium and long term, and producing meaning. Meaning happiness ensures the secretion of both serotonin and dopamine in the brain. This is called authentic happiness in psychology,” he stated.

## **“It is necessary to be able to be in a positive mood under all circumstances”**

Tarhan, explaining Seligman’s PERMA model, said; “The first step of the PERMA Model is Positive Emotions. It is necessary to be able to maintain a positive state of mind under all circumstances. A person should have the same inner peace whether they are in prison or in a palace, and should not be spoiled. To be able to maintain a positive emotional state in every situation. The second step is Engagement (Flow). You become so engrossed in a subject that you lose track of time; this is the second step of positive psychology. If you lose yourself in a task or endeavor and say, 'How did time pass?', it means you are experiencing the feeling of flow. The third step is Relationships. If you can establish healthy, deep, and meaningful social relationships, you will have achieved the third pillar of happiness science. That is, having quality social connections, not superficial ones, is an important element of this model. The fourth step is Meaning. Do you have an ego ideal in what you do? Can you do things that add meaning to your life? How do you want to be remembered at the end of your life? Are you just repeating a routine, or are you adding meaning to what you do? In our language, the word 'manevi' (spiritual) actually means 'meaningful'. When a person adds meaning, or a spiritual dimension, to their work, that work becomes lasting. The emotional state fits into a logical framework, and the brain internalizes it. When there is no meaning, the brain cannot make that emotion permanent or put it into a system. The fifth and final step is Achievement, or success… This is the feeling of achieving small things. However, the modern capitalist system emphasizes big achievements. ‘Win this, get that.’ Ten people compete, three win, seven are unhappy. This system does not make people happy. For this reason, today, violence, depression, suicide, and addiction rates are increasing in schools on a global scale. Because the system cannot offer people real, meaningful happiness,” he stated.

## **“If we want happiness, we need to manage the pharmacy in our brain well”**

Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of emotional literacy, said; “If we want to make our emotions happy, we need to manage the pharmacy in our brain well. Our brain can program itself. For example, a person who says ‘I will wake up at 4 AM’ can wake up exactly at 4 AM without setting an alarm if they are truly determined, but if they say ‘I might wake up, or I might not,’ they will most likely not wake up. Because the brain programs itself accordingly. This feature exists only in humans, not in other living beings. Therefore, whatever we program ourselves for, our brain perceives in that direction, takes a position, establishes connections, and reacts accordingly. This is called a self-fulfilling prophecy in psychology. It has both positive and negative aspects. There is a nice story about this: Mary’s Hat. A unhappy young girl living in New York one day sees a newly opened hat shop while walking down the street and enters. She tries on a hat. At that moment, a little girl there says, ‘What a beautiful hat! It suits you so well.’ Other customers also agree, ‘It really suits you.’ The young girl becomes happy, buys the hat, and leaves the shop. On the way, everyone smiles at her, people open doors for her at work, the taxi driver treats her kindly. Throughout the day, she feels happier and more positive than ever before. When she arrives home, her mother says, ‘My daughter, how beautiful you are today!’ The girl asks, ‘Mom, how is my hat?’ Her mother, surprised, says, ‘What hat? There’s no hat on your head.’ When the young girl looks in the mirror, she realizes she really forgot her hat, but what made her day beautiful was not the hat, but her belief that it suited her. Because she thought positively, she became happy, and when she was happy, those around her also behaved positively towards her. This story shows us this: how we program our brain determines the shape of our emotions and behaviors. Positive thinking creates a positive personality and attitude. That’s why we need to be emotionally literate. That is, it is important to be able to read the emotions of others, but even before that, to be literate in our own emotions,” he said.

## **“Serotonin provides meaningful happiness”**

Tarhan, addressing the two main features of dopamine, said; “One of the stress hormones in the brain is cortisol. The brain triggers the secretion of cortisol by releasing a hormone called ACTH. Cortisol is also secreted from the adrenal glands. Besides these, there are also love hormones. Dopamine is one of them and is secreted during love. Dopamine has two main characteristics. Firstly, it provides strong focus. The word 'aşk' (love) in Arabic comes from the root of 'sarmaşık' (ivy). Just as ivy firmly grips where it wraps around, a lover becomes attached to the person they love. They even form a bond strong enough to die together. As in the example of Leyla and Mecnun… The second characteristic of dopamine is that it completely focuses the person. As Ümit Yaşar Oğuzcan said in his verses, ‘I looked at the sun, Ayten; I looked at the clock, Ayten; I looked at everything, Ayten, Ayten...’ In this state, a person cannot think of anything else. Dopamine provides this. It creates intense focus and a feeling of intoxication. However, if love is a mature love, meaning the person is sure they won't lose their loved one, and their relationship is based on trust and depth, serotonin is also added to this situation. Serotonin provides meaningful happiness. This type of love is called mature love. In contrast, love for someone unreachable is called impossible love or pathological love. That of Leyla and Mecnun is of this kind,” he explained.

## **“If we are in control, there is no need to fear technology”**

Tarhan, reminding that artificial intelligence treats naive people like children, said; “When a person is sick, for example, if their leg is broken, their entire body is not put in a cast, only their leg is. But in psychiatry, the situation is different. When there is a problem in a person, drugs affecting the entire brain are usually given. However, the ideal is to treat only the damaged area in the brain. This is called personalized treatment. In this direction, we have new possibilities like genetic tests. Our capabilities have increased greatly compared to before. For example, studies are being conducted to correct the functioning of a damaged area in the brain using radio frequency (RF) waves. This method can also affect and change hormones. However, since humans are conscious beings, they are in control. You cannot make a human do something they don’t want to do. That’s why humans have free will. They have the freedom to say yes or no. This should also be the case with technology. If we are in control, there is no need to fear technology. If you are naive, artificial intelligence will treat you like a child. It will examine you and think, ‘This person is very naive,’ and try to manage you. But if you ask artificial intelligence the right questions, it will know its place. Artificial intelligence cannot have emotions; this is not possible. Because emotions are related to mirror neurons in the brain. Mathematical modeling of emotions cannot be done. Mathematical modeling related to thought can be done, information can be accessed, but mathematical modeling of emotions does not yet exist. Hopefully, it won't be done. If it is, perhaps it will be the end of humanity,” he stated.

## **“Lack of empathy is one of the most prominent indicators of emotional intelligence deficiency”**

Tarhan, stating that the biggest reason for low emotional intelligence is lack of empathy, said; “Lack of empathy is defined as a Type B personality. Among the four important personality traits, narcissistic personality disorders particularly stand out in this group. Individuals with narcissistic personalities see themselves as special, important, and superior. They look down on everyone, they are arrogant. These arrogant, condescending attitudes are immediately apparent from their behavior. They have no tolerance for criticism and cannot empathize. The Type B personality group also includes antisocial personalities. These individuals are prone to crime, easily lie, and manipulate their surroundings. Additionally, there are borderline personalities who have fluctuating moods like four seasons in a day. Histrionic individuals also lack empathy and are not sincere. The common point of these personalities is a lack of empathy, and they are considered the most dangerous personality type. Living with such a person is like putting a cat and yourself in the same sack; it is quite difficult. However, if you have to live together, there are various methods and tips for dealing with difficult personalities. Such people virtually turn those they live with into psychologists. They are truly difficult personalities. Therefore, lack of empathy is one of the most prominent indicators of emotional intelligence deficiency,” he said.

## **What we call anxiety is actually stress…**

Tarhan, mentioning three types of human models, said; “What we call anxiety is actually stress. There are three types of people: sponge type, Teflon type, and rubber type. Sponge type people are anxious, complaining, and negative. They constantly complain, cry, and spread negative energy. They absorb everything like a sponge but eventually collapse. These individuals are generally depressed, unhappy, and constantly secrete stress hormones. Therefore, they are more prone to many diseases. They are known as Type A personalities. Teflon type people, on the other hand, are careless, selfish, and unconcerned. They only think of themselves. They are like a Teflon pan. They don’t burn themselves but can burn the people they come into contact with. However, Teflon has a weak point; once scratched, it becomes useless. These individuals are also very sensitive to criticism. They might think, ‘I am perfect, how can you criticize me?’ They cannot tolerate failure, and sometimes they might even consider suicide when they fail. The capitalist system also feeds this personality type because the 'Win, consume, want more' mentality supports this structure. Rubber type people are the most ideal group in stress management. They are like rubber; they stretch under stress but then return to their original state. This is called psychological resilience or psychological flexibility. These individuals can think flexibly and adapt to events. In psychology, this is called cognitive flexibility, or the ability to think flexibly,” he concluded his words.

The program concluded after participants' questions were answered.
