Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl, stating that love initiates relationships, said, “Love is partially under our control. It is more temporary. Love, on the other hand, is more related to knowing and understanding the other person.” Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl: “Love is a state of euphoria that encompasses criteria belonging to almost all psychiatric illnesses.” Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi evaluated the topic of ‘The Neurophysiology of Love’. Psychiatry Specialist Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl stated that the concept of relationship is perhaps one of the most valuable concepts in human life, emphasizing the importance of bonding and also pointing out that the brain consists of ‘two hemispheres’ that are ‘complementary’ to each other. Without communication, both neurons and humans dry up and die Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl, stating that the more frequently neurons communicate with each other, the stronger the connections between them will be, said, “These neuronal connections either develop more or regress as a result of genetics, temperament, and environmental interactions. There is neither a neuron nor a human that can exist in an isolated state in nature. Without mutual stimulating interactions, neurons and humans dry up and die.” What is love? Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl defined love as ‘an intense process in which both parties are swept away by positive illusions with the imagination to create better relationships, and are inextricably linked to a prejudiced image of the other person that they have idealized’, and stated that although love is accepted as a universal phenomenon in today's world, numerous research findings indicate that love is influenced by cultural contextual conditions. Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl, stating that “Passionate love is related to our own mental and physiological needs,” also added that love initiates relationships, saying, “Love is partially under our control. It is more temporary. Love, on the other hand, is more related to knowing and understanding the other person. Its object is clear. It sustains the relationship. It is something nurtured and grown with care. It can be more permanent depending on the process. It is related to trust. The process of falling in love is formed by genetics, hormones, environmental, and psychological experiences.” So, is love an illness? Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl stated, “Love is a state of euphoria that encompasses criteria belonging to almost all psychiatric illnesses. Almost all symptoms and findings seen in psychiatric illnesses can be observed during a love process.” Men are more sensitive to sexual stimuli Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl noted that cognitive factors alone are not sufficient for emotions to be felt, and that neurochemical and autonomic nervous system responses appropriate to a certain emotion must also be present, stating the following: “Brain regions activated during sexual arousal are similar to those activated during the process of romantic love. Love and affection relationships are complex neurobiological phenomena based on the activation of the brain's reward system (limbic system). The amygdala is particularly important due to its role as the intersection point of visual and auditory stimuli and its widespread connections with the limbicsystem, cerebral cortex, and brainstem. The male amygdala is known to be 20 percent larger than the female amygdala. Therefore, the male amygdala is more sensitive to visual sexual stimuli. This information may explain the more common prevalence of pornography in men and why women are not aroused as quickly as men by visual stimuli.” You can't choose your parents, you choose your spouse, but how? Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl, stating that people cannot choose their parents, siblings, or children, but can choose their spouse as their own preference, said, “We largely choose them unconsciously as well. Physical attraction is the first characteristic we notice when we meet someone. External features, such as finding the opposite sex handsome or beautiful, are one of the most important determinants in the early stages of a relationship.” Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl noted that physical attractiveness is more important in short-term relationships and during initial acquaintance, adding, “Geographical proximity is also important for attraction. Especially being in the same neighborhood, school, or workplace during and after adolescence increases our likelihood of developing interest and closeness.” Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl also stated that cultural and social norms lead us to be attracted to what is similar, adding, “Evolutionary, biological, and unconscious norms, on the other hand, direct us towards what is opposite. We find people similar to us more attractive, we embrace partners who are like us, and we also become more similar to our spouse with whom we spend many years. Complementarity is also an important factor. In couples who can be happy despite opposites and differences, compatibility is the most important factor.” Men are affected more quickly by sexual attraction Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl also stated that hormones secreted in the individual's body are observed to be an important factor for sexual desire, saying, “In a strong relationship, we cannot ignore sexual attraction. The presence of sexual attraction is important. General studies show that men are affected more quickly by sexual attraction. Although familiarity and similarity foster friendship and understanding, a certain degree of unfamiliarity and dissimilarity is needed to ignite passionate love and sexual attraction. Ultimately, what is exotic becomes erotic. Research on the novelty effect, known as the ‘Coolidge Effect’, shows us that dopamine leads to short-term excitement; while oxytocin pushes towards a long-lasting, reliable relationship based on bonding.” Emphasizing that stress factors are the most significant triggers of love processes, Dr. Mert Sinan Bingöl concluded his words as follows: “There is an obstacle, especially in the transformation to passionate love. The greater the obstacle, the greater the attraction. The person awaits a savior, and this situation triggers love. The person becomes aroused in moments of stress and feels the existence of that emotion more strongly. The element of reciprocity feeds love; love desires love in return, and when we find this, we experience strong attachments. It is thought that the person we choose carries a part of us; we can call this the need to alleviate a deficiency. Those who look at life not from the same angle, but with the same pain, feel more attracted to each other. Those wounded at the same point feel attraction to each other more quickly.” ## Akademik Referans DOI: [https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.43443](https://doi.org/10.32739/uha.id.43443) --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/is-love-a-psychiatric-illness*
