## Özet

Experts state that forgetfulness is a condition we all encounter, but that it is possible to strengthen memory with the right methods.

## İçerik

Neurology Specialist Prof. Sultan Tarlacı, stating that memory is shaped by motivation and interest, said, “Information learned by compulsion does not become permanent. Curiosity is something that triggers motivation. If there is curiosity, one tries to learn all kinds of things and learns their full depth. Then it becomes difficult to forget.” Emphasizing that memories are not fixed, are re-edited over time, and traumas are recorded in a special way, Prof. Sultan Tarlacı pointed out that foods rich in Omega-3 and antioxidants should be consumed for brain health.
Prof. Sultan Tarlacı, a Neurology Specialist at Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, made statements about forgetfulness and shared recommendations for improving memory.

**The main factor shaping memory is motivation**

Prof. Sultan Tarlacı, stating that everyone has biologically different characteristics, said, “Just as our hands, faces, and arms are biologically different, there are differences in certain areas of our brain. What we call memory can also vary from person to person. However, the main thing that forms memory is motivation and area of interest. First, one needs to be motivated about the topic of interest.”

**Curiosity makes learning permanent**

Prof. Tarlacı, pointing out that information learned by compulsion is not permanent, said, “There needs to be curiosity. Curiosity is something that triggers motivation. If there is curiosity, one tries to learn all kinds of things and learns their full depth. Then it becomes difficult to forget.”
Prof. Tarlacı added that forgetting should not be underestimated, saying, “There's an old saying, ‘Thank God, it’s good that forgetting exists and is necessary.’ Because if we didn’t forget, many pains would retain their vividness. Many troubles would repeatedly come back to our memory with the same vividness. Humans naturally forget. In fact, we forget a lot. We forget individually and socially. There is also a collective memory. If it’s written, it’s called history. On the other hand, we all know how debatable history is. Everyone’s written history is different. It shows how volatile memory is, and how much we err when rebuilding it.”

**Memories are remembered by being re-edited**

Prof. Sultan Tarlacı, stating that memory is not like a computer and memories do not return as files, said, “The conditions you are in at that moment, new emotions, information, or inference methods added after experiencing the memory in the past, change your memory in your mental past. That is, you bring it back by re-editing it. Since we can re-edit memories, this situation may also help a person to heal. There are cognitive therapies. They involve changing a person’s thought chain. Sometimes we add false memories.” He continued his words as follows:

“For this reason, there are studies showing that eyewitness testimonies are unreliable compared to cameras. The camera records the event exactly. But we edit it. Because the brain is flexible, soft, fluid. It changes over time, and this change causes gaps when recalling memories. Those gaps bother us. We say ‘something must be there’ and fill it with something else. Thus, your memory changes.”
Traumas are recorded differently

Prof. Tarlacı, drawing attention to the strong connection between the amygdala and hippocampus in the brain, stated that severe traumas are etched into memory much more strongly. He noted that this situation can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder.

**The most effective way to reduce forgetfulness is repetition**

Prof. Tarlacı, emphasizing that repetition is essential for information to become permanent, said, “Repeating learned information on the first day, after one week, and after one month strengthens memory.”

**Proper nutrition is important for brain health**

Prof. Tarlacı, reminding that the brain is also an organ, concluded his words as follows:

“Proper nutrition is essential for its healthy functioning. Omega-3 fatty acids and a Mediterranean-type diet increase brain flexibility. Foods like fish, flaxseed, and walnuts are rich sources in this regard. Artificial fats like margarine cause negative effects on both cardiovascular and brain health. Omega-3 consumption needs to be increased. Antioxidants cleanse the body of harmful substances. Especially in fruits that darken in color, the antioxidant content increases. These types of foods should be consumed regularly.”
