Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, addressed the topics of “University Preferences and Career Choice” in his Hürriyet Aile column this week.

A person's biggest project is themselves. It's about setting goals for oneself, managing oneself. Someone who manages themselves can manage their work and also be successful and happy. That's why the preference period is important. I remind all my candidate friends who are in the preference period that they should make their department and university choices not just to get a diploma, but also to develop themselves, learn, be good at their profession, keeping these points in mind.

We are going through a very important period for my candidate friends who will be making choices on their journey to their dreams. My candidate friends will make their choices until August 20th. I want to address them to help them navigate this process much more healthily.

**There should be excitement for learning and self-development**

The most important quality a student should have is the excitement for learning and self-development. A person's biggest project is themselves; it's about setting goals for oneself, managing oneself. Someone who manages themselves also manages their work and becomes successful. We want to teach this to our students. We highly recommend young people develop these aspects of themselves.

**Preference lists should be prepared correctly**

It is important for prospective students to prepare their preference lists correctly. The choices made and decisions taken today are of great importance to avoid regretting and living with remorse in later stages of life.

**Knowing strengths and weaknesses is very important**

Determining one's personality traits, interests, whether their academic or social side is stronger, is very effective in shaping their future. Sometimes, influenced by our environment, we make decisions based on our weaknesses without considering our strengths or weaknesses. Therefore, choosing career fields that best suit our personality is important.

**Preferences should be made according to success ranking**

When making preferences, candidates should choose based on their success ranking, not their scores. At least 4-5 of the 24 preferences should be above the candidate's level, and 4-5 should be below their success ranking. An undesired field should never be written on the preference list. It should not be forgotten that if an undesired field is written among the 24 preferences, there is a possibility that department might be chosen. Making a choice in a field desired by their family or chosen by a friend and studying in that department can lead to lifelong regret.

**In which profession can I be both successful and happy?**

Also, sometimes candidates think short-term when making their choices. For example, they ask where they can be happy studying. But this situation is not limited to just the 4-year undergraduate period. This decision covers a long-term process. Therefore, candidates should think: In which profession can I be both happy and successful? This way, they will have a profession they can enjoy doing.

**Goals make life meaningful**

A person should also have dreams, ego ideals, and goals tied to those dreams. If a person has no goals, their life passes meaninglessly. In life, there should be not only concrete dreams but also abstract dreams. It's important to set not just concrete goals like "I want a house and a car," but also abstract goals. The goal of being a good person, being useful to one's family, society, and country is important for an individual.

**Preference experts must be consulted**

During this period, candidates should definitely visit universities and get advice from preference counselors. It is very important to consult preference counselors and get their opinions when making choices. Asking, consulting, and learning about what they are curious about will be very beneficial. This reduces the chance of trial and error. Making the right choice is a matter of expertise, and young people should certainly seek help from experts in this field.

**Parents' opinions are important**

Young people should decide on their career choice themselves but should also consult their families. They should definitely listen to their families. A parent's foresight is often very important and beneficial. In career selection, we often see that families want to guide their children according to their own dreams. Instead, they can offer options to their children. Children should listen to their family's advice but also consider what they are good at. They should carefully consider what they want to do, what they are interested in, and in what field.

Every person has a lion within them. Effort is very important for the realization of the targeted goal. If a person does not have the effort to reach a goal, that person only dreams.

**Academic staff and facilities should be thoroughly examined**

The academic staff and the opportunities offered to students by the university to be chosen must be examined. Those outside the city should look at virtual university tours. Universities that offer online education are successful and agile. It is important for the university to be R&D-focused. Universities have important pillars; education, vocational training, project culture acquisition, and public information activities. Does the university contribute to the commercialization of knowledge? Having a technology transfer office is important. Investments in these areas and the opportunities offered to students should also be taken into consideration when making choices.

In summary, I have tried to draw attention to the topics that my candidate friends should consider when choosing a university and department. It is evident that we are experiencing a challenging preference period in the shadow of the pandemic and forest fires. While wishing that this difficult period will be a beautiful process leading to their dreams for each candidate friend, let's not forget that our choices guide our lives! It should be remembered that 'Life is a Choice'. With the reminder to scrutinize carefully for 'A Real University', I wish success to each and every one of you…
