Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan wrote an article in Yeni Meram this week about how one's purpose affects what happens in life.

In his article, Tarhan made the following evaluations:

“Our purposes in life are what make life meaningful and valuable… One must know what to do and act within a plan. We must teach our children how to make plans… We must teach and learn to be the captain of our own ship. Living purposefully is, in a sense, living meaningfully. We will dream the right dreams, acquire the right goals. For this, we will set high goals. A person is what their purpose is…

Now it's time to leave the challenging 2020 behind and look to the new year with hope…

**A break should be taken to cope with stress…**

As we leave behind a difficult year for the world and our country, we need to act on the principle of 'Stop-think-restart' in 2021. Sometimes, a person needs to take accumulated stress in life, take a break, and re-structure. If one cannot do this, they cannot carry that day. If they cannot carry that day, they will miss tomorrow, and the day after. They cannot resolve the past. The most common situation we encounter in depressed or obsessive individuals is their difficulty in focusing on problems and not taking concrete steps. Instead of constantly saying why 2020 was like this, why it happened, and making 2020 an enemy and badmouthing it, we need to accept and manage it.

**Problems should be seen as obstacles, not enemies**

This method is one of the therapy techniques currently used as third-wave psychotherapy. Eliminating problems and traumas experienced by an individual, seeing them as enemies, was an old approach in psychotherapy. This also became a bad example among the public. This is the approach of viewing problems as enemies. This approach has now changed in third-wave psychotherapies. We will not see problems as enemies; we will see them as obstacles to overcome. How do we overcome this? Since this has come before us, let's accept it, and one needs to think about how they can turn the time spent dealing with it into a gain.

**Crisis contains both danger and opportunity**

In Chinese, the word 'crisis' consists of the symbols for danger and opportunity. What happens if we focus on danger during a crisis? Our peace is disturbed, our mental health deteriorates. Our energy and time are wasted. Therefore, we will accept this crisis, take the necessary precautions for its danger aspect, but also focus on what happens in its gain and opportunity aspect, what it brings us. In this case, crisis develops us because there is a saying in English: No pain, no gain. We also say, 'No effort, no reward.' Pains are a part of growth. They are a part of development. When we see it this way, we do not see that pain as an enemy, and thus we continue our struggle while protecting our mental health and becoming stronger. We need to face 2021 this way in human history.

**Focus on gains instead of thinking about losses**

The power of endurance inherent in humans is a very important concept. The year 2020 was, in a way, a resilience training individually. The pandemic created an opportunity for the whole family to sit at the dinner table. They should seize this opportunity. Especially for children, they should turn that family environment into an opportunity to make it beautiful. For this, let's change some of our lifestyles for a year or two. Let's adapt to the new situation this way. Those who can do this will overcome this pandemic without harming their mental health. Those who cannot, those who spend time with 'if only' and 'what if' scenarios, will lose. Currently, the biggest enemy in the pandemic is a complaining approach of 'if only it had been like this,' or 'if only it had never happened to us.' Some people have an approach like this: 'What will happen? Will a vaccine be found?' and they think about this all day. We are not vaccine experts. If we sit and think about the vaccine for fifty minutes out of sixty, we will lose many tasks we need to do. In short, it is important to think about what it has gained us instead of what we have lost.

**Purpose and meaning; they are intertwined**

Purposes in life make life meaningful. Purposeful behavior has now been turned into a module. That is, a person needs to plan their day when they wake up in the morning. Purpose is very important in that respect. There must be a strategic goal. Without a strategic goal, a person does not have a purpose. Goal, aim, objective are all the same intent. In Arabic, the word "iktisat" (economy) comes from the root "maksat" (purpose/intent). If a person wants to manage money, if they want to manage a planned budget, they must first determine their purpose. Then they will determine their important priorities. They will plan their work according to importance and priority. That's why there are strategic goal plans. This is part of time management. The word purpose is usually accompanied by meaning. Purpose and meaning are intertwined. If there is meaning, there is purpose. If a person is in search of meaning, they will surely think, 'I must have a purpose that will add meaning to my life.'

**A ship must have a destination**

In the West, protests are currently being organized for young people, on the grounds that they lack meaningful goals. Protest marches are protesting the system. They say, 'You have not given us a meaning worth rowing for.' What happens when you don't give a purpose to today's youth? Young people get caught up in daily events, games, computers, and smartphones. A ship with a compass and a purpose uses winds as energy. If it has no purpose or compass, the winds drag it wherever they wish.

**We must know what we are doing…**

We must know what we are doing; we must act within a plan. One must plan the day, plan the future. We need to teach this to children. A person needs to be the captain of their own ship. To be the captain of their own ship, one must first have a goal and a plan. Living purposefully is, in fact, living meaningfully. The search for meaning exists only in humans. Examine the genetic structure or behavior of animals. They have no other purpose than eating, drinking, and reproducing. Humans have a difference from animals; humans have the ability to think abstractly. Animals only think concretely. They meet some physiological needs, but humans have psychological needs. There is a search for purpose, a search for meaning in humans. Within this search for meaning, the most important thing a mother and father can give to a child is to set a purpose in life worth toiling and working for. For example, when you reach the end of your life, what kind of person do you want to be, how do you want to be remembered? What kind of mark do you want to leave on life? Will you be a person who only eats, drinks, reproduces, and works for their own benefit, or would you prefer to be remembered as a virtuous person?

**Where is emotional investment made at home?**

Whatever emotional investment is made at home, that is a person's purpose and sacred. Whatever is at the top of our hearts is, in fact, our purpose. In a family, whatever is most valued at home—money, fame, position, wealth—that is the sacred thing of the house. It is worshipped, that is the purpose. Therefore, whatever we have emotionally invested in the most at home, that is our purpose, our sacred. Attention must be paid to this.

**Even the purchasing behavior of those with a purpose changes…**

People with high ideas and high values will be the ones who can keep up with the times. They will also be high-value individuals. An ideal person is someone who thinks not only of their own interests but also of the interests of their family, their country, humanity, and existence itself. Humanity dreams. We will dream the right dreams, acquire the right goals, and for this, we need to have high purposes. Even the purchasing behavior of someone with a purpose changes. Not concrete goals, but high ideals, high purposes—for that, let's ask ourselves what our ego ideal is. What is our self-purpose? A person is what their purpose is.”
