## Özet

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, **Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan and Üsküdar District Governor Murat Sefa Demiryürek participated in the March 8 International Women's Day Panel. **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan delivered the opening speech of the program. **Tarhan emphasized that it is necessary to contribute to the transformation of male-female relationships into a system focused on compassion and kindness; “Compassion is greater than love because it contains empathy. Kindness is greater than respect because it contains empathy. What will transform a relationship of love and respect into compassion and kindness is the addition of empathy. When these are added, it becomes much warmer and more sincere. Home becomes a warm climate.” **he said.

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “Currently, society's greatest need is a lack of empathy”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Solution-Oriented Women's Issues Application and Research Center organized a “March 8 International Women's Day” Panel with the participation of important figures on the occasion of March 8 International Women's Day. In the online panel, Tarhan, who pointed out that the female brain is more advantageous in terms of empathy and that the lack of empathy is selfishness, said: “Currently, there is a greater need for the female brain. The female brain is a brain that perceives empathy. In fact, an observation is made in kindergarten children, when children are playing and one falls and gets hurt, it is observed what the children do. When someone falls and gets hurt, boys continue to play, while girls go and help. Perhaps, due to the maternal instinct, with the innate effect of hormones like oxytocin encoded in the brain, that empathy also considers the feelings of the other party. It is a few steps ahead in terms of empathy skills, such as considering the needs and rights of the other party. Men need to exert more effort to develop themselves in this regard. In fact, in the US, the most common education given to children placed in juvenile reformatories is empathy training. They are not released from there without learning empathy. The female brain is more advantageous. Therefore, rest assured that society's greatest need right now is a lack of empathy. The biggest cause of global evil is a lack of empathy, self-centeredness. A lack of empathy means selfishness, egoism, and when ego becomes a personality, it means narcissism. There is a great need for female initiative in this empathy education.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We don't know women, nor do we know men”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that both women and men should leave free space for each other and that couples in therapy should be told to be “us” as “me.” Tarhan said; “You don't have to make your identity a doormat for your spouse. What happens when there is a relationship where you are ‘us’ as ‘me’? Modernism here encourages competitive relationships between men and women. When there is a competitive relationship, there is fighting, there is conflict, and because physical strength is with the man, fighting breaks out. Whereas, instead of a competitive relationship, there is a second stage: an accepting relationship, meaning accepting your spouse as they are and then moving forward. After that, a complementary relationship comes naturally. An accepting relationship means not trying to change your spouse. Accept them as they are and move forward in life that way. Then they start to complement each other. We try to teach this to couples. In couple therapy projects like 'Families at Üsküdar Üniversitesi,' it is beneficial for us to encourage the women's liberation movement not to be about male-female wars or male-female competition, but rather a process of women and men accepting each other as they are and complementing each other. When I realized this, I saw that as Turkey, we do not have a policy on women. We don't know women, nor do we know men.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan; “Biologically, there is not inequality, but difference”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who presented the book “Women's Psychology” to all participating lecturers specially for March 8 International Women's Day, spoke about the reasons for writing the book. Tarhan said; “I said I needed to do a study to write a policy on women, and I worked on the book. The book 'Women's Psychology' was published in 2005. The work took two or three years. Currently, the book is in its 97th edition. Modernization while preserving our own culture was perhaps first voiced in Turkey, and was just emerging in the world. In it, I discussed the differences between the female brain and the male brain. Both should be equal in rights and opportunities, but there is a biological difference. Biologically, there is not inequality, but difference. We addressed these. Cultural differences, psychological differences, social roles, the role of motherhood, fatherhood, spouse's role – how will all this role-sharing within the family be? I tried to address these so that there would be material for those who want to rewrite our cultural policies amidst cultural change in the world, but unfortunately, our women's policies in that regard are still not focused on changing men's mental perceptions, but only on empowering women professionally. That is important, of course, and it will strengthen women's social role. It aims for women to be more active through social inclusion, but change the minds of men a little. Rest assured, I called that project 'positive psychology for women,' but only so men would read it if it sounded that way. In fact, it is the psychology of women and men. If you read it, the book describes male-female relationships. Therefore, I tried to cover everything, explaining male-female relationships, the role of women and men.”

## **Murat Sefa Demiryürek:** **“The most important of the applications for women is the KADES application”**

Üsküdar District Governor Murat Sefa Demiryürek, who spoke about efforts to protect women in Turkey, said; “Our Ministry of Interior has launched various campaigns and applications within the scope of combating violence against women. The most important of the applications for women is the KADES application. The KADES application envisages effective, timely, and results-oriented intervention in cases of violence. We see 251 KADES reports in 2021 and 256 reports in 2022. The number of people who actually applied was 16 in 2021, and 8 people actually applied in 2022. Another application is the electronic ankle monitor. It is a new application specifically for perpetrators of violence. In 2021, an ankle monitor was applied to 1 person, and as of 2022, electronic ankle monitors have been applied to 4 individuals. There are various women's shelters in Istanbul. In 2021, we placed 27 women in women's shelters. In the first 3 months of 2022, we placed 8 women in women's shelters. If I were to give the total number, although KADES is 251 and 235, the actual real number is higher. The number of those who applied to our marriage organization due to violence was 832 in 2021, while in the past period of 2022, it appears as 163.”

## **Burcu Gündüz: “By examining the language of a society, we can learn a lot about its culture”**

Burcu Gündüz, a specialist social worker at Üsküdar State Hospital, addressed the representation of women in the media and gender issues. Gündüz stated; “Unfortunately, the power of imagery created by the media regarding gender is undeniable. Traces of traditional patriarchal thought are carried in the media. It is necessary to look at the purpose for which the word 'woman' is used in news and whether it serves a particular topic. As measures that can be taken against violence against women, networks among women and within the system must be added, and incidents concerning women should be frequently reported, and topics emphasizing gender, women's and men's equality should be added to the National Education curriculum.”

## **Aylin Tutgun Ünal: “Violence by women against women is an unspoken type of violence”**

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aylin Tutgun Ünal, Director of Üsküdar Üniversitesi Solution-Oriented Women's Issues Application and Research Center (ÜSÇÖZÜM) and faculty member of the Faculty of Communication, addressed the center's goals, activities, and types of violence against women in her speech at the panel. Ünal stated; “With the action plan we worked on last month at our university, the disadvantaged positions of women in society were identified. Women's employment should be increased, and the number of courses in this direction should be increased. In addition to physical violence, psychological violence also needs to be addressed. Violence among the same gender may rarely be physical, but the traces of psychological violence are common. Mobbing in family and work life harms social status and psychology.”

## **Semra Baripoğlu: “The intergenerational transmission of violence is an issue we need to focus on”**

Semra Baripoğlu, a Psychiatry specialist at NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital, addressed the individual and societal reflections of violence. Baripoğlu stated; “Violence against women is a public health problem that never loses its relevance,” and added; “Ignoring, demeaning expressions, and serious problems in personality development during childhood and adolescence are experienced. All forms of violence, as they deepen, can lead to depression and suicide. The loss of values and moral norms is an inevitable problem in the spread of violence.”

## **Çiğdem Yektaş: “Women undertaking multiple tasks creates serious health problems”**

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Yektaş, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry specialist at NPİSTANBUL Brain Hospital, addressed the differentiation of role diversity in women and men. Yektaş stated; “As a result of patriarchal society, women cannot even report the attacks they suffer. In the workplace, women can be discriminated against based on gender and age. Gender discrimination largely manifests its effects on women in social employment areas. The most significant change in women's multiple roles in working life occurred with active participation in the workforce. In working life, a woman's mental health is affected by her working hours, the flexibility, and length of working conditions. Employers must definitely have a psychologist in the workplace and help with recovery.”

## **Specialist Psychologist Selvinaz Çınar Parlak: “An masculine image is expected from women”**

Specialist Clinical Psychologist Selvinaz Çınar Parlak from NP Feneryolu Medical Center addressed the psychological effects of gender inequality on both men and women. Parlak stated; “Fundamentally, men have a concern to constantly keep women down. A system built upon this exists. There is a perception that men are superior to women and that women should be controlled by men. With the emergence of capitalism, women entered the public sphere, but what is imposed on women in the workforce is excessive competitiveness. A masculine image is expected from women. This process works against women, leading to effects such as women becoming more masculine and discrimination.”

## **Specialist Psychologist Elif Cansu Demirci: “The biggest problem we face is women not being aware of their own rights”**

Specialist Psychologist Elif Cansu Demirci, Assistant Director of Üsküdar Social Services Center, addressed the center's goals, activities, and the topic of women in social services. Demirci stated; “We create annual action plans and establish provincial and district-based monitoring activities. In violence prevention and monitoring centers, legal, psychosocial, health, and economic support are provided to victimized women, and when they leave, they are monitored and followed up, integrated into social life, and provided with employment support. Women cannot resist violence due to fear of exclusion and criticism from society. Differences between women and men are not weaknesses.”

## **Dr. Nihal Mert Gedik: “Solutions should be produced for the problems women face in working life”**

Dr. Nihal Mert Gedik, Principal of Çamlıca Girls' High School, offered solutions for the challenges women face in leadership and working life. Gedik stated; “Problems arise from individuals. We need to consider what supportive systems can be implemented to increase the proportion of female managers. There is no study or evidence suggesting that women are less successful than men in managerial positions. In literature, there is a finding that women exhibit more leadership qualities than men. However, I believe it is necessary to look at the situation as a human issue, not just as a gender issue. What supportive systems can we implement? We need to look into these.”

## **Zeynep Merve Türkoğlu: “The roles assigned to women increased with the transition to modern life”**

Sociologist** **Zeynep Merve Türkoğlu addressed the workload of women in the family. Türkoğlu stated; “The most striking of the tasks imposed on women is the burden of programming. We witness women being pushed into the private sphere and remaining in the domestic domain, and this is perpetuated and continued in the media. Women's invisible labor is also brought to light, and with the transition to modern life, many roles have been added to women in proportion to the number of women entering professions. The workload at home and in the family still continues.”
