## Özet

NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, within the scope of World Mental Health Day, brought together the works produced by patients in ergo therapy workshops at the “From the Language of Art to Life” exhibition. The opening of the exhibition was carried out by Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, referring to the relationship of colors with emotions, stated that colors can evoke different associations in people, adding, “Colors truly have a language.”

## İçerik

Tarhan, explaining that brown can be associated with humility and calmness due to its evocation of earth, but in some people can evoke depressive feelings, said, “It would probably not be contradictory to say that those who prefer black actually turn to humor to relax themselves when making jokes. Loving black is not a bad thing, but it is beneficial for one to consider it in terms of self-knowledge.”

NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi opened the “From the Language of Art to Life” mixed exhibition, consisting of works produced by patients in ergo therapy art workshops, within the scope of October 10 World Mental Health Day. The opening of the exhibition, which featured works from painting, ceramics, marbling (ebru), and various other handicrafts, took place on Friday, October 9, with the participation of Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, President of Üsküdar University and Chairman of the Board of NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi.

**Traces of the healing journey became visible in the works**

In the exhibition, not only the resulting works but also the meaning of the production process for mental health came to the fore. Patients' participation in the creative process in ergo therapy workshops was considered a part of the treatment process that supports skills such as experimenting, discovering, making choices, transforming, rebuilding, and sustaining a task.

In the workshop activities, while some patients' initial productions showed more scattered lines and limited color usage, it was observed that the composition became more distinct and color variety increased in the later stages. While it was pointed out that the works alone are not a diagnostic tool; it was emphasized that elements such as color usage, composition, repetitions, focus on detail, creativity, and the ability to sustain the production process, along with clinical observation, can open a different window into a person's process.

**“Art facilitates expressing emotions”**

Speaking at the opening of the exhibition, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan drew attention to the supportive role of art in mental health, saying, “The reason we chose art therapy on this mental health day is that people experience difficulty in expressing and regulating their emotions. Art therapy increases social interaction and facilitates emotional expression.”

Tarhan, stating that art and music contribute to a person's relaxation, described the effect of art on humans with the words, “Our brain dances with movement and music.”

**“In treatment, medicine and art complement each other”**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized that art offers significant support, especially in addiction rehabilitation, stating, “Particularly in addiction rehabilitation, the use of art therapy has a very practical value. In treatment, medicine and art complement each other; an dilemma like 'medicine or art?' is wrong. It is very important to use both for rehabilitation purposes.”

Tarhan also touched upon the personal value of the works in the exhibition for the clients, saying, “There are very beautiful works in the exhibition. Some of our clients take some of these works to keep as a souvenir, while others leave them here, in our museum.”

**“Our brain dances with music”**

Tarhan noted that music, movement, rhythm, and dance are also used in art activities, saying, “Actually, as our arms and legs move, our brain also moves. In other words, our brain dances with music.”

Referring to the importance of music for emotional expression and social relationships, Tarhan said, “For this reason, we particularly value music for its contribution to a person's relaxation, expression of emotions, and establishment of a social network. It is very important for awareness.”

**“Colors have a language”**

Within the scope of the exhibition, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan also touched upon the relationship between colors and emotions, stating that colors can evoke different associations in people, and said, “Colors truly have a language.” Tarhan stated that the colors and symbols used in art activities can contribute to understanding a person's inner world, and emphasized that in these evaluations, a person's mood and the meanings they attribute to colors should be taken into account.

Tarhan, explaining that different shades of blue can be associated with different feelings, said, “Those who interpret blue positively feel a sense of well-being in blue, and sadness in dark blue.” Tarhan, who associated light blue with relaxation and unwinding, pointed out that the meanings of colors can change according to a person's perspective.

**“Every color should be evaluated both positively and negatively”**

Tarhan, pointing to the stimulating aspect of red, stated that he associates this color with anger and does not recommend the use of red in the living spaces of hyperactive children. Tarhan, who stated that yellow can carry different emotional associations, said, “Yellow, in a negative sense, expresses anxiety more. In a positive sense, it expresses relaxation. Every color should be evaluated both positively and negatively. Colors are not just negative or positive.”

nTarhan, stating that green evokes health and healing, noted that this color can also be associated with feelings of well-being, eternity, and boundlessness in some people. Tarhan recorded that these different associations of colors are important for a person's self-expression in art therapy.

**“Loving black is not a bad thing”**

Tarhan, explaining that brown can be associated with humility and calmness due to its evocation of earth, but in some people can evoke depressive feelings, associated black with melancholy and white with purity and cleanliness.

Tarhan, stating that the preference for black should not be evaluated negatively on its own, said, “It would probably not be contradictory to say that those who prefer black actually turn to humor to relax themselves when making jokes. Loving black is not a bad thing, but it is beneficial for one to consider it in terms of self-knowledge.”

Tarhan also commented on white, saying, “White contains all colors. Therefore, it expresses purity and cleanliness. We try to interpret colors here according to the individual.”

**The same color can carry different meanings for different people**

Emphasizing that colors do not have the same emotional correspondence for everyone, Tarhan used the expressions, “A depressive person attributes different meanings to colors, a manic person, a person with a high emotional state attributes different meanings.” Therefore, Tarhan, pointing out that colors should not be interpreted independently of the person and their current mood, said, “Because it is not right to say something definite like 'This color is this,' but symbols are used according to the person's personality structure.”

Answering the question regarding the relationship between colors and appetite, Tarhan evaluated green, yellow, and orange among the colors that can trigger appetite in some people.

**“Symbolic language is important in art”**

Tarhan, stating that in art activities, besides colors, drawings and symbols also provide space for a person to express themselves, said, “Symbolic language is important in art,” pointing to the importance of evaluating the symbols a person uses together with their own life and emotions.

Tarhan stated that details such as whether roots or fruits on branches are drawn in a tree painting can form a starting point for discussing emotions that a person finds difficult to express, and that art activities can contribute to a person sharing experiences they cannot put into words and understanding their inner world.

**“There is no need to be pessimistic at all”**

Tarhan, explaining the importance of self-knowledge, stress and anger management, cooperation, and empathy skills in efforts to protect mental health, said, “Actually, there is no need to be pessimistic at all. There are many things to do, practical ways.”

**Over 100 works, the result of 4-5 years of effort**

Exhibition Curator and Art Therapist Yeşim Aslan stated that over 100 works prepared by clients are the product of approximately 4-5 years of effort, and said, “The purpose of this exhibition is to make visible the art activities, rehabilitation, and art therapy works carried out in our art ergo therapy unit.”

Clinical Psychologist Çiğdem Demirsoy emphasized that the production process is as important as the resulting works, stating, “For not only patients but also for individuals with sound mental health, art is a tool for self-knowledge, discovery, self-expression, and connecting with oneself.”

**“We pour out our souls with the art of Ebru”**

Ergo therapy Ebru Instructor Nesrin Ulu stated that Ebru contributes to clients' self-expression and relaxation, saying, “With the magic of colors, we pour out our souls into our Ebru tank. In a way, we enter into non-verbal communication.” Ulu stated that as clients became more familiar with art, their aesthetic concerns decreased, and their experiences of living in the moment and self-awareness developed
