## Özet

Experts state that mental care is not just about feeling good, but also the ability to contact and carry difficult emotions.

## İçerik

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel, noting that long-term stress and suppressed emotions can affect many areas from immunity to heart health, said, “In individuals who prioritize mental care, stress levels decrease, sleep and energy balance improve, and life satisfaction increases. This is one of the cornerstones of overall health.” Tunçel stated that small but sustainable habits, rather than big steps, might be sufficient to protect mental health, and noted that safe and non-judgmental relationships strengthen mental well-being. Tunçel also emphasized that mental health is not a luxury, but the foundation of quality of life.

Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel spoke about the importance of mental care on overall health and quality of life within the scope of February 17, World Human Spirit Day.

**Prioritizing mental care is one of the cornerstones of overall health!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel stated that mental care is about an individual recognizing their emotions, being able to regulate them, identifying their needs, and developing healthy coping mechanisms for challenging life events. She added, “In other words, it is not just about ‘feeling good,’ but also the ability to contact and carry difficult emotions.”

Emphasizing that mental well-being is not independent of physical health, Tunçel said, “Long-term stress, suppressed emotions, and unresolved mental burdens can manifest in many areas, from immune system problems to sleep disorders, chronic pain to cardiovascular diseases. In individuals who prioritize mental care, stress levels decrease, sleep and energy balance improve, and life satisfaction increases. This is one of the cornerstones of overall health.”

**Those who recognize and express their emotions are more resilient to stress!**

“Big changes are not necessary to protect mental health,” said Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel, adding that small but sustainable habits are quite effective.

Tunçel gave examples of small changes:

“Habits such as pausing for a few minutes each day to ask oneself ‘what am I feeling right now?’, getting regular sleep and nutrition, soaking up sunlight and moving the body, writing down emotions, or sharing them with someone trustworthy, strengthen an individual’s connection with themselves. Individuals who recognize and express their emotions become more resilient to stress and can release emotional burdens before they accumulate.”

**Relationships where an individual can be themselves support mental well-being!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel reminded that humans are social beings by nature, stating, “Feeling understood, accepted, and supported is a fundamental need for mental health.”

Tunçel stated that secure social relationships reduce stress hormones, alleviate feelings of loneliness, and strengthen an individual's self-worth, explaining, “What is important here is the quality of relationships, rather than the number of relationships. Relationships where an individual can be themselves, protect their boundaries, and share their emotions without judgment significantly support mental well-being.”

**Personal development that considers mental care is compassionate and sustainable!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel pointed out that personal development is often approached with the goal of ‘being better,’ but added, “However, when combined with mental care, this approach evolves into ‘knowing and accepting oneself as one is.’ Development is healthy when an individual recognizes their strengths and weaknesses, knows their boundaries, and sets realistic goals. Otherwise, it can turn into a process that constantly pushes oneself and feeds feelings of inadequacy. Personal development that considers mental care is compassionate and sustainable.”

**Mental health is not a luxury, but the foundation of quality of life!**

Clinical Psychologist Tuğçe Tunçel stated that there are certain unconscious habits in daily life that challenge mental health, saying, “Constantly suppressing or ignoring emotions, excessive screen and social media use, constantly comparing oneself to others, seeing rest as ‘a waste of time,’ and perceiving asking for help as a weakness can be counted among these habits.”

Underlining that these habits can lead to emotional exhaustion and internal disconnection over time, Tunçel concluded her words as follows:

“Mental care, at this very point, involves allowing oneself to slow down, notice, and seek support. On the occasion of February 17, World Human Spirit Day, I would like to remind you: Mental health is not a luxury, but the foundation of quality of life. Taking good care of it is one of the most humane cares we can show ourselves.”
