While everything goes well until couples sign the marriage certificate, what happens for this excitement to eventually give way to silence? The answer is actually very simple: It's not marriage that ends love, but spouses leading a monotonous life. Marriages that cannot break free from the daily routine cause the partners to drift apart from each other. Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided important insights on love and marriage, specifically for Valentine's Day on February 14. Öztekin, who gave the formula for long-lasting love, explained what needs to be done in relationships and ways to escape monotony. **Abandon the possessive instinct** Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin emphasized that the boundaries of commitment and freedom must be well-defined, stating, ‘‘You are mine, I am yours’ is the most effective formula for ending a relationship. A relationship is not a prison. Every individual must realize themselves in their relationships and maintain their partnership as their authentic self.’ Emphasizing that change and development are inevitable in relationships as in all of life, Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin said, ‘Being able to adapt to new situations without dwelling on the past makes a relationship healthier and longer-lasting. Ask ‘How are you?’ Inquire about how they are, and truly care about how they feel. Shared interests are important. Create and develop areas of common interest. Psychological research shows that relationships between couples who do not have shared interests are not long-lasting,’ he stated. **Don't spend all your time together** Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin stated that individuals dedicating time to themselves will nourish their relationships, and continued his words by saying, ‘Spend a lot of time together, but don't be together every moment. Taking time for yourself also nourishes the relationship. This way, you'll miss each other and find more things to talk about and share.’ He further added: ‘If there is love, respect, and loyalty in a relationship, trust is formed. You cannot be with someone you don't love for a long time. You cannot love someone you don't respect. Trust cannot be one-sided; it is essential for both parties to trust each other. Sexuality should not be neglected. The best expression of love is sexuality. An ‘it’s okay if it happens, it’s okay if it doesn’t’ approach to sexuality will reflect as dissatisfaction in the relationship. The best way to achieve sexual harmony is to talk openly about it. Don’t turn the relationship into ego battles. You are not rivals, and your arguments are not competitions to be won. You might be 3-0 up in an argument, but your relationship is over. Tough luck.’ **As jealousy increases, the duration of the relationship decreases** Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin said, ‘Jealousy is not a measure of love. The notion that ‘a loving person is jealous’ is false.’ Stating that as jealousy increases, the duration of the relationship decreases, Öztekin added, ‘Jealous people are actually those who love themselves more and have insufficient self-confidence. As jealousy increases, the duration of the relationship decreases.’ **Don't blame your partner** Emphasizing that couples blaming each other brings an end to the relationship, Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin said, ‘Don't label your partner with ‘You are like this, you are like that.’ Don't criticize excessively. Don't demean. If these are present, it means the end of the relationship is in sight. Don't compare your partner to other people, or your relationship to other relationships. Appreciate your partner's worth and enjoy your relationship. Don’t expect them to read your mind. Your partner won’t instinctively understand your troubles. They cannot read your mind. Don’t accuse your partner of being insensitive without explaining your feelings to them. What you need to do is tell your partner how you feel,’ he stated. Every relationship experiencing monotony has a lack of communication. Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin pointed out that communication between couples needs to be increased. Underlining that there is a lack of communication in every relationship experiencing monotony, Öztekin said, ‘Couples who communicate with each other on the basis of open, sincere, and honest communication take the biggest step towards saving the relationship from monotony. Stop constantly expecting from the other side. A relationship requires mutual effort. If you only expect the other person to be interested in you and show you respect, you won’t have taken even the slightest step to revitalize the relationship. Don’t wait for a special day to buy a gift. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Happiness can be found in small details. By doing this, you get a chance to reiterate to your partner that you know what they like, how well you know them, and how much you value them,’ he said. **Aren't you tired of seeing each other in sweatpants and shorts at home?** Öztekin warned, ‘Take better care of yourselves,’ and continued, ‘Even if not every day, when dining at home, the man can sit at the table in a shirt, and the woman with her makeup refreshed. Then tell each other how beautiful you are; it’s not hard at all.’ If you notice you are constantly doing the same things, engage in different activities. Clinical Psychologist İhsan Öztekin emphasized the importance of engaging in different activities and listed his recommendations as follows: ‘Develop hobbies for two that you can do together. For example, you can play two-player games like chess or backgammon, complete puzzles, play Scrabble, or even build models. You can enrich these activities according to your interests. It’s both fun and an opportunity to do something together, just the two of you. The important thing is to engage in something together. Add color to your sexual life. Be more creative in your sexuality, whether in or out of bed. Don’t hesitate to talk to your partner about these matters. Use exciting fantasies to add thrill to your relationship. Spend your weekends differently. Without making long plans during the week, take surprise trips, get away somewhere. Exercise and play sports together. Cycling is the most enjoyable aspect of doing sports together. On weekends, you can head to the beach or a forest with food and drinks packed in your backpack. Set ‘TV-free days.’ This way, you gain an average of 4 hours to spend more quality time together. Unplug the television and start an extraordinary life together.’ --- *Kaynak: [Üsküdar Haber Ajansı](https://uha.com.tr) — https://uha.com.tr/monotony-not-marriage-kills-love*
