## Özet

Experts state that negative emotions can change eating behavior, and emotional eating disorder is one of the results.
Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, stating that it arises from a person eating in response to negative emotions such as stress, loneliness, anxiety, and anger, rather than physical hunger, said, 'It is triggered more by emotional stimuli than hunger signals.'

## İçerik

Aydın, pointing out that psychological factors, social factors, and learned behavioral patterns are effective in the development of emotional eating behavior, emphasized that the main concern in emotional eating is not weight, but managing emotions. Aydın also stated that keeping a hunger diary can help the individual notice the emotion-thought relationship during eating.

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about the triggering factors and treatment methods of emotional eating behavior.

**Emotional eating is triggered more by emotional stimuli than hunger signals!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that emotional eating disorder is an eating behavior that emerges when a person eats in response to negative emotions such as stress, loneliness, anxiety, and anger, rather than physical hunger, and said, 'It is triggered more by emotional stimuli than hunger signals.'

Aydın stated that physical hunger develops slowly, 'It can be satisfied with any type of food and ends with a feeling of fullness. Emotional hunger, however, starts suddenly, usually leads to high-calorie foods, and can continue despite a feeling of fullness. A student experiencing a chocolate craving before an exam might actually be trying to satisfy anxiety-induced emotional hunger, not physiological hunger.'

**In emotional eating, the person experiences weight anxiety at a secondary level!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, pointing out that emotional eating disorder differs from clinical eating disorders, said the following:
'Among mental disorders, it does not appear as an independent diagnostic category like anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa; it is more of a tendency that affects eating behavior. While clinical eating disorders involve severe disturbances in weight, body image, and behavior, in emotional eating, the individual's primary concern is not weight, but regulating their emotions. In anorexia, a person has an intense fear of gaining weight and restricts food, whereas in emotional eating, a person overeats to cope with stress but experiences weight anxiety at a secondary level.'

**There are different factors that trigger emotional eating behavior!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, addressing the factors effective in the development of emotional eating behavior, said, 'Psychological factors such as poor self-regulation skills, low self-esteem, anxiety disorders; social factors such as being rewarded with food in the family, stressful life events, lack of social support; and learned behavioral patterns are effective.'

Aydın, indicating that an individual who was calmed with food when crying in childhood might continue a similar coping mechanism in adulthood, stated, 'Research shows that emotional eating is particularly more common during adolescence and young adulthood, as stress related to identity development and social relationships is intense during this period.'

**A hunger diary can help a person understand when and with what emotions they eat!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın, emphasizing that to recognize emotional eating behavior, a person must observe the emotion-thought relationship during eating and distinguish hunger signals, continued as follows:
'Keeping a diary or creating a “hunger diary” helps a person understand when and with what emotions they eat. Someone who constantly snacks due to stress after coming home from work, despite actually being full, might realize that they are acting out of emotional hunger, not physical hunger. Furthermore, frequently experiencing feelings of guilt and regret after eating is also an important clue.'

**The 'perfect body' culture on social media can trigger emotional eating!**

Aydın noted that the fast pace of modern life, intense stress factors, and social media's constant imposition of an ideal body image are among the elements that reinforce emotional eating behavior. He explained, 'Especially the tendency to compare oneself on social media and the “perfect body” culture can create stress and feelings of inadequacy in individuals, and these emotions can trigger emotional eating. A young person constantly seeing fit-life content on Instagram might feel inadequate and try to alleviate their stress by snacking. Additionally, the rapid access to fast and processed foods brought by modern life is a facilitator that perpetuates this behavior.'

**The aim of treatment is to recognize the emotions that lead to eating behavior!**

Clinical Psychologist Cumali Aydın stated that cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most commonly used and effective methods in the treatment of emotional eating, 'Because it helps the individual recognize the automatic thoughts that lead to eating behavior and develop healthier coping skills.'

Aydın, stating that mindfulness-based approaches also contribute to a person recognizing their emotions and bodily signals and making eating behavior more conscious, concluded his words as follows:

'Group therapies, support groups, and the teaching of healthy lifestyle skills also strengthen the treatment. For example, with mindful eating practices, a person can learn to be satisfied without overeating when they eat a chocolate slowly, truly noticing its taste.'
