The “7th International Positive Psychology Congress” organized at Üsküdar Üniversitesi is being held on April 18-19, 2025, at the Nermin Tarhan Conference Hall on the Central Campus of Üsküdar Üniversitesi.

The 7th International Positive Psychology Congress, organized this year by Üsküdar Üniversitesi in partnership with Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, NP Etiler and NP Feneryolu Medical Center, the Turkish Psychological Counseling and Guidance Association, and the Positive Psychology Institute, hosts international experts conducting studies in this field. This year’s theme for the two-day congress has been determined as “Neuroscience-Based Positive Psychology.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “We started the Positive Psychology course for the first time in 2013”**

At the opening of the fi-gital congress, Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector and Congress President Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who gave a speech titled “Second Wave Positive Psychology,” stated that the Positive Psychology course was first launched as a rectorate course at Üsküdar Üniversitesi in 2013, saying, “We included this course in the curriculum in 2013, while Harvard University added the Positive Psychology course in 2015. Yale University included this course in its curriculum in 2018. Later, especially during the Covid period, Yale opened this course to the public. And this development was reported in the New York Times in 2021. In a short time, 3.5 million people registered for the Positive Psychology course. This shows us that there is a serious need and potential for social impact in this field within society. Similarly, Bristol University in the UK included the Positive Psychology course in its curriculum in 2019, specifically to prevent increasing suicide cases among young people.”

Tarhan stated that this year, the theme “Neuroscience-Based Positive Psychology” was chosen for the Positive Psychology congress, and that evidence in this field is now abundant, saying, “We can now see with scientific data that the brain functions more healthily with positive psychology applications; how brain structures and processes related to happiness operate. This is now a completely evidence-based psychological approach.”

## **“During clinical hypnosis, the individual's Default Mode Network is activated”**

Tarhan stated that the most important network in terms of positive psychology is the structure called the Default Mode Network (DMN), saying, “The Default Mode Network, or default mode network, is a brain network associated with meaning-making and defining one’s place in life.”

Tarhan explained that the Default Mode Network is always used during mental wandering, meaning while daydreaming or searching for meaning, stating, “Clinical hypnosis, mental awareness, the search for meaning, the process of finding one’s place in life are all related to this network. While mindfulness and meditation help individuals accept problems, clinical hypnosis offers the individual the opportunity to take action regarding the problem. In other words, during clinical hypnosis, the individual's Default Mode Network is activated. At this time, the individual leaves their conscious choice to the therapist. In the therapy process, this network is activated, and the individual is guided.”

## **“Second Wave Positive Psychology, or Positive Psychology 2.0, emerged”**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that Classical Positive Psychology has evolved over time and reached a new stage, and continued:
“With this development, Second Wave Positive Psychology, or Positive Psychology 2.0, emerged. What did Classical Positive Psychology say? ‘One needs to focus on positive emotions.’ It advocated for turning towards positive emotions such as joy, hope, and gratitude. In other words, this approach focused on strengthening the individual’s positive aspects. While classical psychology generally aimed for the individual to move from a negative level to zero, meaning a normal level, Positive Psychology aimed to move from zero to positive. However, this approach should not be misunderstood as Pollyannaism. Over time, this approach deepened further and gained a second dimension:
Positive Psychology 2.0. While Classical Positive Psychology primarily focused on the question ‘How do we become happy?’, Positive Psychology 2.0 emphasizes the question ‘How do we live a meaningful and resilient life?’ The classical approach tends to avoid difficulties and negativities. However, Positive Psychology 2.0 states; ‘Dark aspects, traumas, and pains are part of growth, even their source.’ This approach brings a completely different perspective to positive psychology.”

## **“Positive Psychology is rediscovering many ancient values we have abandoned”**

Tarhan stated, “According to the Developing Trauma Thesis, when we experience a trauma, instead of going back to the past to resolve it, it is possible to approach the trauma with the question ‘What did this trauma teach me?’ and turn it into an opportunity for growth.” He added:

“Positive Psychology should be evaluated within the framework of rules for managing our psychological resources. By ignoring or disregarding the pains of life, we can neither treat a person nor easily make them happy. There will be pains; what is important is to accept and manage these pains.
At this point, Positive Psychology adopts the understanding of teaching how to cope with pains, not ignoring them. Positive Psychology offers scientific methods to make people happier in social life, while also rediscovering many ancient values that we abandoned in the past. These values already exist in our deep-rooted cultural heritage, which we know as Anatolian wisdom. Indeed, it is known that the pioneers of Positive Psychology, although they may not explicitly reference them, were largely inspired by thinkers such as Mevlânâ.”

## **Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör: “We want to create awareness among our students and in academic circles”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Rector Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, in her opening speech at the congress, noted that positive psychology has been taught as a course at the university for years, stating, “It is also a concept that has gained an important place in our university’s education and teaching approach and academic perspective. However, we do not treat this concept merely as superficial optimism; we approach it by associating it with an inquiring, critical perspective. With this approach, we aim both to make a valuable contribution to academic life and to add value to human life. We want to question our existence as humans; to create awareness among our students and in academic circles. The world is already moving in a certain direction to some extent, but we want the world not to go somewhere despite us. We want to be a part of this process, to contribute. Let’s try to guide the world with valuable touches. Because each of us is a part of this world, and together we create this world. Therefore, let’s not accept a small minority making decisions on behalf of the world, despite us. Let us question, let us be aware, let us think.”

## **Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Kaynak: “We are talking about a new world order where rights and law are hardly recognized”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean Prof. Dr. Deniz Ülke Kaynak, in her opening remarks, pointed to the relationship of positive psychology with the world and continued:

“The conditions we are currently in point to a completely different civilizational order. In this period, which we call Industry 4.0, we are going through a process where everything is turned upside down, where we feel quite helpless against the world as individuals, and where we can no longer even be individuals. Because being an individual has rights and laws beyond duties and expectations. However, we are now talking about a new world order where these rights and laws are hardly recognized. In this new era, we are facing a reality where both central political authorities and the digital dictatorship, referred to as ‘techno-oligarchy,’ permeate every aspect of our lives. So, what will we do in such an environment? These types of positive psychology congresses are shaped not only to reflect the search for well-being of individuals but also that of an entire society, a broad community, and the effort to add new meanings to life. In other words, while we are healing ourselves, we must also succeed in healing the society we live in, our environment, and our civilization.”
