Prof. Dr. Aref Ali Nayed, who is among the 50 most influential Muslims in the world and is the founder of the Libyan Revival Movement, also chairs the Libyan Institute for Advanced Studies (LIAS) and Kalam Research and Media (KRM).

Prof. Dr. Aref Ali Nayed delivered his speech titled 'Nursi's Luminescent Incubator: Al-Mathawi Al-Arabi Al-Nuri' in the Üsküdar University Risale-i Nur Research Platform (RİNAP) Meeting Hall. Naved's English speech was translated into Turkish by Dr. Öğr. Üyesi Nafi Yalçın, Head of the Translation and Interpreting Department.

Üsküdar University Founding Rector Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan also attended the seminar. In the seminar, which was attended by many scientists and researchers from other universities and institutions in Istanbul as listeners, Prof. Dr. Aref Ali Nayed focused on the concepts of Mana-i İsmi, Mana-i Harfi, Niyet, and Nazar;

“Bediüzzaman Said Nursi speaks of four words and four sentences as a summary of his forty years of life and thirty years of scholarly life in Risale-i Nur. In this speech, I will focus on these four words: Mana-i İsmi, Mana-i Harfi, Niyet, and Nazar. The Master explains the first two words by utilizing the science of Arabic grammar. In the concept of Mana-i Harfi, a letter has no meaning by itself. Letters come together to form words and thus serve the meaning of the words they form. They highlight their meaning but do not carry a meaning themselves. Just like what we call prepositions and postpositions in English, the particles called 'harf' in Arabic do not express a meaning on their own but serve to complete the meanings of the nouns they are used with. In the concept of Mana-i İsmi, the noun directly serves itself; it brings its own meaning to the forefront. For example, when we say 'school', we understand the meaning of school. Therefore, a noun does not show the meaning of another word; it only brings its own meaning to the forefront. However, in Mana-i Harfi, the letter signifies the meaning of another word. In almost many places in Risale-i Nur, this distinction between Mana-i İsmi and Mana-i Harfi is highlighted, developed, and emphasized. The difference between these two concepts, as expressed in Nursi's Mesnevi, is a simple yet immensely important distinction between two different modes of existence in the world. This vital distinction between seeing objects as signs pointing to their Creator and seeing objects only for themselves is indicated by ma'na-i harfi and ma'na-i ismi.” he said.

## **Objects are Verses Pointing to the Creator**

Prof. Dr. Nayed states that Master Bediüzzaman followed a 'semiotic ontology that views things as signs pointing beyond themselves, but also added a divine dimension to this ontology, and that his descriptions of existence in Risale-i Nur are not merely about objects, but about divine signs.' He emphasizes that since the Master's perspective also incorporates the signs of objects pointing to the Divine Names of Allah (Cenab-ı Hakk) in a separate dimension, his semiotic ontology expresses an epistemology that is far beyond and more advanced than the works of other scientists. When Master Bediüzzaman examines an entity or a thing, he studies its signs pointing to the Creator. In this way, through mana-i harfi, for example, when I look at a sugar cube, I can infer what kind of chemical knowledge the person who made it possesses, and how, with this knowledge, sugar essence can be extracted from sugarcane; how it can be transformed into sugar; and also that they are knowledgeable about all the processes from various stages in a factory until it is ready for us. When I look at this sugar cube, I may not know the name of the person who made it, but I can say that they understand chemistry, are very intelligent, wise, hardworking, skillful, and possess many other qualities. However, to look at this sugar cube with mana-i ismi is merely to see it as sugar, to take it, to use it, and to benefit from it. With mana-i harfi, by observing its properties, I can understand the signs and indications it bears to the actions, names, attributes, and essence of the artisan who made it.” he said.

## **Intention is entirely dependent on attitude**

Referring to the aspect of intention (Niyet) that looks towards Allah (Cenab-ı Hakk), Prof. Dr. Nayed said; 'Intention is the inclination that a person aims for and has in mind, and it is entirely reflected in one's attitude. Nazar, on the other hand, is a gaze, a way of seeing, and it also means 'theory' in Greek. That is why theory is called 'nazariye'. For Master Bediüzzaman, intention encompasses many things. One meaning is simply turning towards Allah (Cenab-ı Hakk). The other is the human attitude, the stance and behavior one adopts while perceiving something. Intention is related to the attitude a person adopts. We can approach these divine signs with different attitudes. Our difference in attitude also shapes what we receive from them. That is, what we receive, what we perceive, is entirely dependent on our attitude. Allah (Cenab-ı Hakk) is generous; He is the possessor of bounty and grace; His generosity has no limits. What I will receive from His generosity is entirely dependent on my attitude when approaching Him. If we request with humility, with sincere devotion, and with a sense of helplessness, then, of course, since Allah (Cenab-ı Hakk) is the absolute possessor of existence and grace, He grants our requests. The Master expresses this 'humble' attitude with the following four phrases: Terk-i Dünya (Abandonment of the World), Terk-i Ukbâ (Abandonment of the Hereafter), Terk-i Hestî (Abandonment of Existence), and Terk-i Terk (Abandonment of Abandonment). In this consciousness of being, the approach of abandoning the world, the hereafter, and existence, and finally abandoning the abandonment itself so as not to fall into pride, is displayed. Because intention expresses and encompasses all these meanings, the Master describes intention as 'the elixir'. In ancient alchemy, the object called 'Al-iksir' was said to turn dust into gold. Similarly, intention makes a person's smallest desires, requests, and deeds valuable; it transforms them into worship. Master Bediüzzaman considers this intention to be the most important element of nazar.' he said.

## **“Nazar is also a fundamental concept in Kalam” **

Referring to the concept of nazar in Kalam and Risale-i Nur, Prof. Dr. Nayed said; 'Nazar is a very fundamental concept in Kalam. Imam Juwayni, in his work titled Al-Nazar, states that nazar encompasses many meanings. There is seeing, waiting, contemplating, evaluating, and many other meanings. These varied and rich meanings of nazar in Kalam and other Islamic theological works are also expressed in Risale-i Nur. Nazar encompasses all of them. That is, the meanings expressed by the Master's concept of nazar include and represent all the meanings expressed by the Maturidi and Ash'ari traditions. We can connect all the meanings of nazar in the Islamic tradition with today's psychiatry and cognitive sciences, but it also expresses a meaning beyond them. It also expresses many meanings such as comprehension plus compassion, comprehension plus striving to understand, comprehension plus mercy, humility, respect, and love. In summary, the concept of nazar used in Risale-i Nur includes all of these.' he said.

## **Towards a New Kalam Theology**

Finally, Prof. Dr. Nayed stated that 'Master Nursi evidenced and clearly presented what he saw as he saw it; he understood the difficulties this created for readers, that what he saw was actually aimed at treating his own pains and wounds, and that it might not be accessible to people who did not suffer from the same illnesses and discomforts.' However, Master Nursi makes an astonishing offer to the reader: Nursi actually invites the reader to see what he saw as he saw it, as a 'guest' of his own eyes. This invitation is a call to see together. It is an invitation to establish a new Kalam theology. It is very clear that Nursi viewed this project of his entire life and scholarly career as an open-ended project aimed at seeing divine truth through the manifestations of divine names in cosmic verses, by way of splendor, beauty, and perfection. The New Kalam makes three serious demands on its interpreters: They must abandon selfishness (teccerüd), open their hearts and minds to the Quran and divine verses (ta'aruz), and guide themselves with pure intention (teveccüh).

This New Kalam refers to evidence from four main sources: Prophet Muhammad (PBUH); the Universe (all divine signs); the Quran (the entirety of divine verses that open all other verses); and finally, the pious consciousness of humanity. This New Kalam will recognize and explain six main features of the universe that clearly point to the Creator. These are the secret of Transparency (Şeffafiyet sırrı), the secret of Correspondence (Mukabele Sırrı), the secret of Balance (Muvazene Sırrı), the secret of Order (Intizam Sırrı), the secret of Detachment (Tecerrüd Sırrı), and the secret of Obedience (Itaat sırrı). Master Nursi clearly demonstrates the path to such a New Kalam in his beautiful work, Mesnevi-i Nuriye." He used these expressions.
