Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at Üsküdar Üniversitesi Dental Hospital provided information on how baby bottle tooth decay occurs and ways to prevent it. **Baby bottle tooth decay is mostly seen on the surfaces of the upper front teeth close to the gums! ** Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen stated that baby bottle tooth decay is a condition where a child under 72 months, meaning under 6 years of age, has decay in any tooth requiring a filling or root canal treatment, adding, “This condition, seen before the age of 6, is medically defined as early childhood caries. Baby bottle tooth decay is its common name among the public.” Dr. Lecturer Şen conveyed that baby bottle tooth decay is mostly seen on the surfaces of the upper front teeth close to the gums, and said, “In these areas, it appears as chalky, whitish, or brownish spots. Among the public, this condition can also be referred to as staining or darkening on the front teeth.” **Oral hygiene should begin before the first tooth appears!** Pointing out that oral hygiene should begin before the first tooth appears to prevent baby bottle tooth decay, Dr. Lecturer Buse Yılmaz Şen said, “During breastfeeding, the inside of the baby's mouth can be wiped with a moistened clean gauze or muslin cloth after feeding.” Dr. Lecturer Şen, recommending regular cleaning with an age-appropriate toothbrush once the first tooth emerges, continued: “There is an important point to emphasize here, which is often overlooked: cleaning should not be limited only to the tips of the teeth. It is of great importance to clean the front area, starting from under the lip, along with the gums.
