## Özet

Experts state that changing daily routines during the holiday period can pave the way for increased alcohol consumption, and this situation can turn into addiction.

## İçerik

Psychiatry Specialist Asst. Prof. Alptekin Çetin, stating that the increasing amount of consumption and difficulty in controlling alcohol point to risky use, said, “‘I’m on holiday, nothing will happen’ – frequent and high-volume alcohol consumption starting with this thought can lead to a change in the individual’s relationship with alcohol.” Highlighting that the continuation of alcohol consumption after the holiday should not be overlooked, Asst. Prof. Çetin emphasized that changes related to alcohol use should be recognized early and professional support sought when necessary.

Asst. Prof. Alptekin Çetin, Psychiatry Specialist at Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi, made statements about the risk of increased alcohol consumption during the holiday period turning into risky use and addiction.

**Frequent and high-volume alcohol consumption can turn into risky use!**

Stating that daily routines change and sleep and eating patterns can be disrupted during holiday periods, Asst. Prof. Alptekin Çetin said, “Alcohol consumption can also be affected by these changes.”

Asst. Prof. Çetin pointed out that holidays are seen by many as a period of getting away from responsibilities and relaxing, and said, “However, frequent and high-volume alcohol consumption, starting with the thought ‘I’m on holiday, nothing will happen,’ can lead to a change in the individual’s relationship with alcohol. Especially behaviors such as drinking alcohol every day, gradually increasing the amount consumed, and thinking one cannot have fun without alcohol are among the indicators of risky use.”

**Alcohol becoming a tool for regulating emotions can increase the risk of addiction!**
 />

Expressing that alcohol can create a short-term feeling of relaxation and relief, Asst. Prof. Çetin said, “This effect can make it easier for the person to turn to alcohol to cope with stress, anxiety, and negative emotions. After a while, the person may start using alcohol not only in social settings but also when bored, anxious, having difficulty sleeping, or feeling bad. Alcohol becoming a tool for regulating emotions is an important situation that needs attention regarding the development of addiction.”

**Increased tolerance during holidays can lead to greater alcohol consumption!**
 />

Noting that the need to consume a greater amount of alcohol over time to experience the same feeling of relaxation or pleasure is defined as ‘tolerance development,’ Asst. Prof. Çetin continued his words as follows:

“A person who initially sufficed with one or two glasses may consume more alcohol in the following days to feel the same effect. High-volume consumption continuing for several consecutive days during the holiday period can increase a person’s alcohol tolerance. If consumption does not return to its old level after the holiday ends, or if the person experiences restlessness when not using alcohol, professional support should be considered.”

**In alcohol addiction, loss of control is more important than frequency of use!**
 />

Highlighting that alcohol addiction cannot be defined solely by drinking alcohol every day, Asst. Prof. Çetin said, “Loss of control is one of the determining factors.”

Asst. Prof. Çetin stated that what should primarily be evaluated in terms of addiction, in addition to how often a person drinks, is whether they can control their alcohol consumption, and said, “If a person drinks more than planned, fails despite trying to stop or reduce, neglects their responsibilities, or continues to use despite experiencing harm, there may be a serious problem. Individuals who state they only use alcohol on holidays or weekends can consume high amounts in a short time. The fact that a person does not use alcohol every day does not mean their pattern of use is safe. Consuming high amounts of alcohol in a short time can lead to serious consequences such as impaired judgment, loss of balance, traffic accidents, falls, violent behavior, unprotected sexual intercourse, and alcohol poisoning. Therefore, not only the frequency of use but also the amount consumed at one time and the resulting consequences should be considered.”

**Continued alcohol consumption after holidays can be a sign of a problem!**
 />

Asst. Prof. Alptekin Çetin noted that the continuation of alcohol consumption after the holiday ends, the person starting to create opportunities to drink, or difficulty returning to their old life routine should not be overlooked, and said, “If a person continues to use alcohol in the evenings for reasons such as relaxing, sleeping, or reducing daily stress, it may indicate that a temporary holiday behavior is starting to turn into a permanent habit.”
 />

Asst. Prof. Çetin emphasized that if certain situations related to alcohol are observed, a person’s usage habits should be carefully evaluated, and said, “Consuming alcohol more or for longer than planned, failing in attempts to reduce or stop alcohol, gradually drinking more to feel the same effect, experiencing restlessness, tremors, sweating, or sleep problems when not using alcohol, encountering problems in family, work, or social life due to alcohol, using alcohol in risky situations, continuing consumption despite physical or psychological harm, thinking one needs alcohol to have fun, socialize, or relax, hiding alcohol use from others or understating the amount consumed, and continuing the same consumption pattern after the holiday ends, can all mean there is a problem.”

**Alcohol use and underlying mental health issues should be evaluated together!**
 />

Providing information that the risk of addiction is not the same for everyone, Asst. Prof. Çetin said, “Young people, those experiencing difficulty with impulse control, individuals with depression or anxiety disorders, and those with a family history of addiction can be at higher risk.”
 />

Asst. Prof. Çetin stated that alcohol can sometimes temporarily suppress the symptoms of mental health problems; however, in the long term, anxiety, depressive symptoms, sleep problems, and impulsive behaviors can increase further. He added that if a person uses alcohol to escape psychological distress, both alcohol use and the underlying mental health problem should be evaluated together.

**Heavy alcohol users should plan the cessation process with the support of a healthcare professional!**
 />

Asst. Prof. Çetin warned that for individuals who have been regularly consuming high amounts of alcohol for a long time, suddenly stopping alcohol without medical evaluation can be risky, and said, “For individuals who have developed addiction, sudden cessation of alcohol can lead to serious withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, sweating, palpitations, intense anxiety, insomnia, seizures, and changes in consciousness. Therefore, individuals who regularly and heavily consume alcohol should definitely plan the cessation process with the support of a healthcare professional.”

Underlining the importance of early detection of changes in alcohol use, Asst. Prof. Çetin concluded his words as follows:

“One does not need to wait for their life to be completely disrupted to seek help for alcohol use. If the amount of consumption has increased, if it has become difficult to control, if use continues after the holiday, or if alcohol has started to affect a person’s mental and physical health, a psychiatrist should be consulted. Early support can prevent risky use from turning into addiction and facilitate the treatment process.”
