## Özet

Experts state that the deficiency of certain nutrients in vegetarian and vegan diets can also negatively affect oral and dental health.

## İçerik

Asst. Prof. Yeliz Güneş from the Department of Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology emphasized the importance of adequate intake of nutrients such as protein, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc, especially calcium and vitamin D, and said, “Especially in young individuals during tooth development, the inadequacy of these nutrients can negatively affect the mineralization of enamel and dentin, which are the basic structures of teeth. In adults, long-term calcium and vitamin D deficiency can lead to a decrease in bone mineral density and an increased risk of jawbone loss.” Stating that a balanced plant-based diet supports oral health along with general health, Asst. Prof. Güneş emphasized that supplements should be used with the advice of a specialist physician.

Asst. Prof. Yeliz Güneş from the Department of Oral, Dental and Maxillofacial Radiology, Üsküdar University Dental Hospital, made statements about the effects of vegetarian and vegan diets on oral and dental health, the nutrients that need attention, and the importance of proper oral care.

**Calcium and Vitamin D are Important for Dental Health in Vegan Diets!**

Stating that vegetarian and vegan diets can be a healthy and balanced way of eating when properly planned, Asst. Prof. Yeliz Güneş said, “However, calcium and vitamin D intake may be insufficient in vegan diets, where animal-derived foods are more restricted. Attention should be paid to compensating for this deficiency with different food sources.”

Pointing out that calcium and vitamin D play important roles in tooth development and maintaining the health of jawbones, Asst. Prof. Güneş stated, “Especially in young individuals during tooth development, the inadequacy of these nutrients can negatively affect the mineralization of enamel and dentin, which are the basic structures of teeth. In adults, long-term calcium and vitamin D deficiency can lead to a decrease in bone mineral density and an increased risk of jawbone loss. Therefore, what is important for vegetarian and vegan individuals is not whether animal products are consumed, but rather that calcium and vitamin D requirements are adequately met through various food sources.”

**Balanced Plant-Based Nutrition Also Supports Oral Health!**

Referring that vegetarian or vegan diets alone are not a risk factor for gum diseases, Asst. Prof. Güneş said, “In fact, a balanced plant-based diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes can support oral health as well as general health, thanks to its fiber, vitamin, and antioxidant content.”

Mevcut studies generally do not show a negative relationship between vegetarian and vegan diets and gum health, Asst. Prof. Güneş stated the following:

“In some studies, it has even been reported that symptoms such as gum inflammation and bleeding are less common in these individuals. This situation is thought to be related to plant-based diets being rich in vegetables and fruits and consequently containing more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants. However, good meal planning is crucial. Insufficient nutrient intake can negatively affect the immune system, the integrity of oral tissues, and healing processes.”

**All Nutrients Should Be Adequately Consumed in Vegan and Vegetarian Diets!**

Asst. Prof. Güneş pointed out that in vegan and vegetarian diets, in addition to calcium and vitamin D, attention should also be paid to the adequate intake of vitamin B12, iron, zinc, protein, and Omega-3 fatty acids, and said, “Especially since vitamin B12 is naturally found predominantly in animal-derived foods, ensuring adequate B12 intake is important, particularly for vegan individuals.”
n

Asst. Prof. Güneş noted that protein is essential for the formation and repair of bone and oral tissues, and said, “Iron and zinc, on the other hand, play a role in maintaining the healthy functions of the immune system and tissues. Omega-3 fatty acids help regulate the body’s inflammatory response. Therefore, in vegan and vegetarian diets, it is important to consume adequate amounts of all these nutrients through a varied and balanced diet, rather than focusing on a single vitamin or mineral.”

**Supplements Should Be Used According to Personal Needs!**

Asst. Prof. Güneş stated that the calcium and vitamin D supplement requirements are not the same for every individual following vegetarian and vegan diets, and said, “Firstly, the aim should be to obtain sufficient amounts of these nutrients through daily diet; supplement use should be considered when dietary intake is insufficient to meet needs or a deficiency is detected.”

Asst. Prof. Güneş stated that the need for supplements and the dosage to be used should be determined by taking into account the person’s age, dietary pattern, level of sun exposure, general health status, and blood tests performed if necessary, and warned that unnecessary or high-dose use of vitamin D supplements should be avoided, and they should be used with the recommendation of a healthcare professional when needed.

**Regular Care is Essential for Oral and Dental Health!**

Reiterating the importance of a varied and balanced diet for maintaining oral and dental health in vegetarian and vegan individuals, and paying attention to adequate intake of protein, vitamins, and minerals, Asst. Prof. Yeliz Güneş concluded her words as follows:

“Fruits and vegetables, which play an important role in plant-based nutrition, are part of a healthy diet. However, frequent consumption of fruits, fruit juices, and acidic beverages throughout the day can increase the risk of tooth enamel erosion. Similarly, frequent consumption of snacks with high sugar content can also increase the risk of tooth decay. Therefore, attention should be paid not only to the content of the foods consumed but also to the frequency of consumption.

In oral care, brushing teeth twice a day for approximately two minutes is recommended for everyone, not just vegetarian and vegan individuals. Appropriate oral hygiene tools such as dental floss or interdental brushes should be used to remove food residues accumulated in areas that the toothbrush cannot reach. In addition, regular dental check-ups should be made to protect oral and dental health and to detect possible problems early.”
