## Özet

**Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the avoidance of change stems from fear of uncertainty, habits, and the anxiety of losing what one has, saying, “People who do not want to change have underlying fears. Generally, these individuals have rigidity of thought, meaning stubborn personality traits. Their mental flexibility is weak.” **

**Reminding that the human brain has the capacity to change at any age, Prof. Tarhan said, “The human brain is a neuroplastic organ. No matter what age one reaches, if open to new experiences, it can change.”**

President of Üsküdar University and Chairman of the Foundation Prof. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated the psychology of change.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that change is an inevitable part of human life, and people who resist change often act with a need to feel secure, but the effort to maintain the current order can turn into one of the most significant obstacles to development in the long run.

## **“People who do not want to change have underlying fears”**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the fear felt in the face of change often stems not from novelty itself, but from uncertainty, saying, “People who do not want to change have underlying fears. For example, there is a fear of novelty. Generally, these individuals have rigidity of thought, meaning stubborn personality traits. Their mental flexibility is weak. They want to feel secure. Change means a risk. There is an uncertainty there. Some people cannot manage uncertainty, they cannot tolerate uncertainty. Being able to manage uncertainty is already a skill.”

Tarhan explained that resistance to change is observed not only in individual life but also in family businesses and corporate structures, saying, “In family businesses, the first generation is successful; they have brought the company to a certain point, but conditions have changed. In these changing conditions, a person needs to weigh what to protect, what to change, and what to let go of. Because these individuals have been successful, a blindness arises from success, a business blindness. They act conservatively, saying, ‘We’ve reached this point, let’s not take risks and jeopardize everything.’ They create conflicts with new generations. However, changing is part of growth.”

## **“The only constant is change”**

Emphasizing that change is a fundamental truth of life, Prof. Tarhan stated that people sometimes ignore the changing conditions of life due to their desire to protect their comfort zones.

Reminding the approach of the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus to change, Tarhan said, “One cannot step into the same river twice. It is seemingly the same river, but the conditions and time there are changing. You cannot enter the same water twice. The greatest truth in the universe is the truth of change.”

Tarhan likened human physical and psychological development to riding a bicycle, saying, “Life is like riding a bicycle. If you stop the bicycle, you fall. If you ride too fast, you'll still tumble, but you need to ride at a certain pace. In life too, you need to constantly move forward, constantly learn new things. When you do not do this, you do not stay in place; you regress.”

## **“Do not wait for motivation, start with a small step”**

Prof. Tarhan pointed out that people often postpone starting when they want to make changes in their lives, saying, “The goal must be concrete. If it's an abstract goal, you cannot do it, and it leads to procrastination. The person should set a concrete goal like ‘I will do this on this day, at this hour.’ But while going towards that goal, they should ask the question, ‘What should I do today?’ They will do something, even if it's 1 percent today.”

Prof. Tarhan also stated that the idea of waiting for motivation to build up before starting change is wrong, saying, “The idea that one should wait to be motivated is wrong. One should start with small steps. Because motivation comes later.”

## **“Strong willpower alone is not enough for change”**

Emphasizing that change will not happen merely by wanting it or having strong willpower, Prof. Tarhan pointed out the importance of forming a strategy for a person to change their habits, and evaluating the idea that “only strong willpower is sufficient to change a habit,” Tarhan said, “Strong willpower is important but not enough on its own. It is definitely necessary to develop a strategy.”

## **“Saying ‘I am like this, I will not change’ can be a trap in relationships”**

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that one of the areas where resistance to change is most clearly seen is close relationships, and noted that the statement “I am like this, accept me as I am” can stem from different psychological reasons.

Prof. Tarhan said, “A person who disregards change will be the same after 10, 20 years. They lose many things in a competitive world. In a relationship, saying ‘I am like this, I will not change, accept me as I am’ is a trap. It is something said to enslave the other party, to establish dominance over the other party; this is one aspect. The other aspect is that change requires effort, investment, and endeavor. Remaining as one is requires no effort.”

## **“The phrase ‘I am like this’ is sometimes manipulation, sometimes defense”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that not every “I am like this” statement should be considered manipulation, saying, “In such situations, they might also say this as a defense. Because they have not found the answer to give at that moment. They say it as a defense in this way. Here, ego battles occur. On the other hand, if it's not well-intentioned but a narcissistic manipulation, the person uses it to dominate the other party. They say, ‘Accept me.’ Generally, those who hold power, those who are successful, those who are strong do this to the weaker one.”

Prof. Tarhan stated that individuals trying to change each other in relationships can increase conflicts, saying, “In relationships, the responsibility is not to change the other party. One should ask the question, ‘What do I need to do for this relationship to improve?’ When a person does what they need to do, the other party also changes unconsciously. Whether to change or not is one's own responsibility.”

## **“If you cannot change the flow, change your perspective”**

Tarhan explained that people cannot control all the events they experience, but they can change their reactions to those events, and stated that changing one's perspective is an important psychological skill.

Prof. Tarhan stated that the solution in relationships lies in thinking about a common future rather than listing the other party's mistakes, saying, “What is the right action for the good of the relationship? What is right for our future? What is right for the child's future? What is right for the family's future? What is right for the future of our workplace? A person who asks these questions starts to think outside the box.”

## **“The human brain can change at any age”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that the common belief that people cannot change as they age is incorrect, saying, “The human brain is a neuroplastic organ; there is neuroplasticity. It is constantly changing. There is no such thing as never changing. No matter what age one reaches, if open to new experiences, if having a different perspective, one can change.”

Prof. Tarhan explained that people who constantly repeat the same behaviors cannot sufficiently use their mental flexibility, saying, “Some people always use the same route when going somewhere. The sentences they always use, the same words. They are closed to learning new words, new things. They always watch the same movies, tell the same things, repeat the same story countless times. They do not think of telling it in a different way. It's easier for them.”

## **“It's not possible to delay aging without teaching mental flexibility”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that healthy aging is not limited to physical health, saying, “The brain is like a valley. If you water all sides of the valley, everything grows, but if you water only one side, only one side develops. It's the same in the brain. Whichever area you invest in, those regions develop. The brain has areas related to emotions. It has areas related to fine motor, gross motor, social skills, emotional skills, and information coming through the five senses.”

Prof. Tarhan stated that the use of different brain functions is important for maintaining mental vitality in old age, saying, “If a person learns to use all areas of their brain, when they reach old age, it is called ‘super aging.’ Super-aged individuals have high skills in using all parts of their brain. It's not possible to delay aging without teaching mental flexibility. People take good care of themselves physically, but physically vigorous, mentally old people emerge.”

## **“It is necessary to distinguish courage from impulsivity”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that big decisions such as changing jobs, ending a relationship, moving to another city, or starting a new life require sound judgment as much as courage, and said that sudden decisions can sometimes stem from impulsivity.

Prof. Tarhan explained that the human tendency to act on the first thought that comes to mind can increase the risk of making mistakes, saying, “In such situations, we all have a tendency to make quick decisions. It's easier for us; we do the first thing that comes to mind. We tend to believe what we heard last. This is an oversimplification. We say to think with the traffic light metaphor. First, stop at the red light. Then wait, think. ‘Is this decision beneficial for me, or not? Is it appropriate, or not? Is it dangerous, or not?’ Do a quick analysis.”

## **“Families should try to understand their children's change instead of hindering it”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that individuals can sometimes encounter resistance from their families during the change process, and noted that behind this approach of family members there might be a fear of loss or a desire to protect their loved ones.

Emphasizing that parents should support their children's independent decision-making processes, Prof. Tarhan used the expression, “‘Parents should be able to say, ‘If you succeed, we are with you; if you do not succeed, we are also with you.’”

## **“Do not be afraid of change, but take calculable risks”**

Prof. Tarhan stated that being merely courageous is not enough for change to occur healthily, and that the ability to manage uncertainty and develop the right strategy is also important, adding that individuals should be realistic and prepared in the face of change.

Emphasizing that being open to change does not mean taking risks without thinking, Prof. Tarhan said, “As you step out of your comfort zone, it is beneficial to do so with calculable risks. It is necessary not to fear uncertainty, but to be able to manage it. Strong willpower is important but not enough on its own. It is definitely necessary to develop a strategy.”
