## Özet

Stating that physiotherapy is not a method only resorted to when pain or movement restriction occurs, experts say that preventive physiotherapy aims to reduce risks before problems arise.

## İçerik

Emphasizing that working long hours at a desk and a sedentary lifestyle can increase problems such as neck, back, and lower back pain, and postural disorders, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Ayşenur Hacıhasanoğlu said, “Especially in the early period, with correct exercises and personalized movement training, the progression of the problem can be prevented, the healing process can be accelerated, and the risk of recurrence can be reduced; therefore, instead of waiting a long time thinking ‘the pain will pass,’ early assessment is important if complaints persist.” Hacıhasanoğlu stated that the reduction of pain does not mean the complete disappearance of the problem and emphasized that treatment should be completed when the person reaches their functional goals.

Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Ayşenur Hacıhasanoğlu from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements on September 8, World Physiotherapists' Day, about the role of physiotherapy not only being limited to treating existing pains and diseases; but also in preventing physical problems and reducing the risk of recurrence through a preventive approach, correct ergonomics, early intervention, and personalized exercises.

**Physiotherapy aims to reduce risks before problems arise!**

Physiotherapist Ayşenur Hacıhasanoğlu stated that physiotherapy is not a method used only in musculoskeletal system diseases, saying, “Physiotherapy can be utilized in many areas such as musculoskeletal system, neurological, cardiopulmonary, pediatric, geriatric, women’s health, sports, orthopedic and post-traumatic rehabilitation, and chronic pain.”

Hacıhasanoğlu expressed that the idea of ‘If I don’t have pain, I don’t need physiotherapy’ is not entirely accurate, stating, “Pain can be an important sign that there is a problem in the body; however, physiotherapy is not only done to treat pain. Preventive physiotherapy aims to reduce risks before problems arise by assessing a person's movement capacity and physical functions. However, this does not mean that everyone needs to see a physiotherapist regularly; the need is evaluated according to the person's age, activity level, lifestyle, and risk factors.”

**Physiotherapy plays an important role in ensuring correct ergonomics!**

Referring to which physical problems are increased by working long hours at a desk, staying in front of a screen, and a sedentary lifestyle, Hacıhasanoğlu stated, “Neck, back, and lower back pains, postural disorders, muscle weakness, joint movement restrictions, headaches, and repetitive strain problems can lead to more frequent occurrences. Physiotherapy, on the other hand, plays an important role in assessing a person's posture and movement habits, strengthening muscles with appropriate exercises, increasing mobility, and ensuring correct ergonomics in daily life.”

**Starting treatment before complaints become chronic can increase success!**

Hacıhasanoğlu pointed out that in problems such as lower back and neck pain, postural disorders, or muscle weakness, starting physiotherapy before complaints become chronic and before movement restriction becomes pronounced can increase the success of the treatment, saying, “Especially in the early period, with correct exercises and personalized movement training, the progression of the problem can be prevented, the healing process can be accelerated, and the risk of recurrence can be reduced; therefore, instead of waiting a long time thinking ‘the pain will pass,’ early assessment is important if complaints persist.”

**Reducing the risk of injury recurrence is among the main goals of treatment!**

Hacıhasanoğlu stated that in sports injuries, the role of physiotherapy is not limited to only accelerating the healing process, adding, “Identifying and correcting biomechanical and functional factors leading to the injury, and restoring muscle strength, joint mobility, proprioception, balance, and neuromuscular control, are also among the main goals of treatment to reduce the risk of recurrence of the same injury.”

**Reduction of pain does not mean the complete disappearance of the problem!**

Emphasizing that there are some common mistakes encountered during the physiotherapy process, Physiotherapist Ayşenur Hacıhasanoğlu concluded her words as follows:

“Performing exercises irregularly, applying recommended movements with incorrect technique, not changing mistakes made in daily life, and discontinuing treatment before completion when complaints decrease can be shown among common mistakes. Especially, the reduction of pain does not mean the complete disappearance of the problem; early termination of treatment can lead to incomplete recovery of muscle strength, movement control, and functional capacity, consequently causing complaints to recur and increasing the risk of injury. Therefore, treatment should be completed not only based on the disappearance of pain but also on the person achieving their functional goals.”
