## Özet
Experts state that chemicals frequently used in home cleaning can lead to serious health problems if not used correctly, emphasizing that these chemicals should particularly not be inhaled.
## İçerik
Drawing attention to the fact that inhaled chemicals can cause irritation in the respiratory system, allergic reactions, and even cold-throat diseases like asthma, Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu said, “The effects of cleaning chemicals on eye irritation have also been subjects of research. Many chemicals cause symptoms such as burning, watering, or redness when they come into direct contact with the eyes.” Dr. Mamçu emphasized that a strong smell is not an indicator of hygiene and stated that children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with allergic predispositions are more affected by these substances.
Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu provided information about the harms of incorrect and unnecessary use of cleaning chemicals to human health and the environment, as well as the importance of proper and conscious cleaning habits.
**Incorrectly used cleaning chemicals harm health!**
Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu stated that frequently used surface cleaners and disinfectants in home cleaning contain chemicals such as bleach (sodium hypochlorite), ammonia, alcohols, quaternary ammonium compounds, and synthetic fragrances, adding, “While these substances kill germs, they can also harm human health if used incorrectly or frequently.”
Dr. Mamçu pointed out that harmful substances inhaled, in particular, can lead to various health problems: “Chemicals that become aerosols during cleaning can be inhaled as airborne particles, which can cause irritation in the respiratory system, allergic reactions, and even cold-throat diseases like asthma. Furthermore, the effects of cleaning chemicals on eye irritation have also been subjects of research. Many chemicals cause symptoms such as burning, watering, or redness when they come into direct contact with the eyes.”
**A pleasant smell does not mean the surface is more hygienic!**
Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu reminded that the scent of cleaning products usually comes from perfumes and volatile chemicals, stating, “A smell does not mean the surface is more hygienic.”
n
Dr. Mamçu stated that some products only suppress odors without killing germs, and continued:
“A strong smell means more chemicals are being inhaled. These chemicals can cause adverse effects across a broad spectrum of health, from skin irritations to respiratory problems. Especially the risk of children and pregnant women being exposed to chemicals, the different gender-based effects of these substances, and their environmental impacts further highlight the necessity of conscious consumption.
Bleach, in particular, should never be mixed with other cleaners like acidic products. Toxic gases can be released. True hygiene is achieved by applying the right product in the right amount for the right duration.”
**Ventilating the environment during cleaning is essential!**
Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu emphasized that keeping tables, countertops, and work surfaces clean and disinfected is extremely important for preventing infectious diseases, saying, “It will be beneficial to avoid inhaling chemicals released into the air during the use of cleaning materials and to ventilate the environment afterward.”
Dr. Mamçu noted that using spray-form products in enclosed spaces is more dangerous, explaining, “Proper ventilation is crucial to inhale fewer chemicals while cleaning. For this purpose, windows and doors must be opened. Good ventilation helps minimize toxic substances in the room's air.”
**Cleaning chemicals can cause health problems in sensitive groups!**
Addressing how children, pregnant women, the elderly, and those with allergic predispositions are affected by these chemicals, Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu warned, “Children’s respiratory tracts are more sensitive. They can touch surfaces and put their hands in their mouths. Some chemicals can affect hormonal balance in pregnant women. The lung capacity and immune system of the elderly may be weaker. Runny nose and wheezing may be observed in allergic individuals and asthmatics.”
Dr. Mamçu reminded that a persistent cough after cleaning, difficulty breathing, dizziness or nausea, severe burning in the eyes, redness, itching or burning sensation on the skin, or an increase in asthma or allergy symptoms could be related to the product used.
**Unnecessary use of antibacterial products leads to health problems and environmental pollution! **
Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu provided information about the health and environmental problems that unnecessary use of antibacterial products can cause, stating, “It leads to health problems such as the development of resistant bacteria, weakening of the immune system, disruption of skin flora, and causes environmental pollution by chemicals mixing with water.”
Offering recommendations to protect against harmful chemicals in cleaning products, Dr. Mamçu concluded her words as follows:
“It is very important to read the labels of cleaning products correctly. Having knowledge about which product should not come into contact with which ingredients minimizes the negative effects that may arise from chemical reactions. Products with reduced chemical content or entirely natural products can be preferred. Natural cleaning products can be made at home with ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon.
