## Özet

Experts warn that pools, which are common areas of use for many people, can harbor different bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

## İçerik

Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu stated that microbes like E.coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Shigella, which mix with water, can cause diarrhea in individuals if the water is swallowed. She added, “Infectious jaundice type A (Hepatitis A) can also be transmitted through the mouth or nose, or by swallowing water contaminated with the excretions of sick people.”

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu stated that children's pools are slightly riskier in terms of infection transmission, and that fungal diseases can be contracted from both pools and the sea.

Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu from Üsküdar Üniversitesi NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi provided information about diseases that can be transmitted from pools and the sea, and explained prevention methods.

Diarrhea, respiratory system, ear, eye, and skin infections can be observed

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu reminded that swimming pools are common areas of use for many people and said, “Pools become contaminated with human excretions, meaning they get dirty. Many bacteria, viruses, and parasites create this contamination. Microbes like E.coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Shigella, which mix with water, cause diarrhea in individuals if the water is swallowed. Infectious jaundice type A (Hepatitis A) can also be transmitted through the mouth or nose, or by swallowing water contaminated with the excretions of sick people.”

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu stated that rivers and seas can also be contaminated with human and animal excretions, and that drinking this water can lead to diarrhea, respiratory system infections, ear, eye, and skin infections.

Fungi can also live in chlorinated water

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu pointed out that fungi are organisms that do not die in chlorinated environments and do not disappear in the sea, saying, “If they find a suitable environment, they can settle in various parts of the body and continue their lives. Since they can also divide in chlorine, it is easy for them to be transmitted from pools. Fungal infections, which are common in summer months, are generally not given much importance as they can be treated with various ointments. However, if precautions are not taken, they can cause significant discomfort to the individual. Furthermore, chlorine in pools causes an eye infection called chemical conjunctivitis.”

Children's high probability of swallowing water increases the risk!

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu stated that children's pools are slightly riskier in terms of infection transmission, adding, “The most important factors in this are children's less control over their feces and urine, and their higher likelihood of swallowing water during play. Especially from pools that are not cleaned sufficiently and where clean water circulation is not maintained regularly, infections can be transmitted.”

How is pool cleanliness controlled?

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu stated that the Ministry of Health has determined the health principles to which swimming pools will be subject in open pools, indoor pools, aqua parks, thermal pools, and similar areas, and said the following:

“Sampling of pool water is carried out by the Directorate of Public Health or by public institutions, organizations, and private laboratories accredited for sampling and authorized by the ministry. Pool waters are subjected to both physical and chemical analysis, reported, and those found to comply with the relevant legislation are permitted to operate. The controls of pools in tourist facilities are under the inspection authority of the Ministry of Tourism, and periodic maintenance and pool water analysis reports must be presentable upon request.”

Take these precautions before entering the pool!

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu stated that “the most important reason for infection transmission from pool water is organic contamination originating from the people using the pool,” and emphasized that microorganisms reproducing in dark environments where ultraviolet light does not reach and in stagnant waters can also be a source of infection.

Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu, stating that for cleanliness and hygiene, one should shower before entering the pool and always wash hands with soapy water if the toilet was used, concluded her words as follows:
“People with any disease symptoms or infectious diseases should not use common pools. Individuals can prevent their eyes from coming into contact with water by entering the water with swimming goggles. Swallowing water should be avoided as much as possible.

After leaving the pool, one should shower with clean water, and the mouth and eyes should be washed with clean water. People with open wounds should cover the wound with a waterproof bandage before entering the pool. In cases of fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, redness in the eyes, wounds in the genital area, or itching, a healthcare institution should be consulted.”
