## Özet

Experts state that women can experience rapid emotional changes in the postpartum period, and this situation is influenced not only by hormonal changes but also by social and psychological factors.

## İçerik

Stating that postpartum blues, observed in the majority of women, is distinguished from depression by its short duration, Psychiatrist Prof. Engin Emrem Beştepe said, “This condition is experienced in a high proportion, about 80 percent of women, within the first five days after birth. During this period, very rapid emotional changes can be observed. However, these symptoms last three to five days and then resolve spontaneously.” Emphasizing that symptoms lasting longer than two weeks and affecting an individual's daily functionality require attention for depression, Prof. Beştepe drew attention to the importance of medical intervention and psychiatrist support in such cases.

Psychiatrist Prof. Engin Emrem Beştepe from Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hastanesi made statements about the reasons for the rapid psychological changes experienced by women after childbirth, the characteristics of postpartum blues, and how it can be distinguished from depression.

**Many factors shape postpartum psychology!**

Pointing out that the most fundamental reason for rapid changes in women's psychology after childbirth is hormonal changes, Prof. Engin Emrem Beştepe said, “Hormones such as progesterone and estrogen suddenly drop, being replaced by hormones such as prolactin and oxytocin. In other words, a hormonal chaos occurs.”

Stating that hormones are the most important known biological cause but are not sufficient on their own, Prof. Beştepe said, “There are many factors that determine psychology. The social environment, social support, the person's self-esteem, self-belief, their approach to the baby, and their thoughts about whether they can care for it directly affect postpartum psychology positively or negatively,” he stated.

**Postpartum blues is short-lived, resolves spontaneously!**

Stating that sudden emotional changes can be observed in many women after childbirth, Prof. Beştepe said, “We do not call this completely normal; it refers to the condition we call ‘postpartum blues’ (maternity blues).”

Noting that this condition is quite short-lived, Prof. Beştepe continued as follows:

“In a high proportion, about 80 percent of women, this condition is experienced within the first five days of birth, almost everywhere in the world. Although childbirth may seem like an extremely pleasant and happy event, the level of anxiety is also quite high. Many questions trouble the mother's mind, such as 'Was the birth healthy?', 'Is my baby well?', 'Will I be able to care for it?', 'Will I be able to form a good bond with my baby?'

During this process, restlessness, crying, and very rapid changes in emotions, such as crying one moment and laughing immediately after, can be observed. However, these symptoms are short-lived; they last three to five days and then resolve spontaneously.”

**If symptoms last longer than two weeks, beware of depression!**

Pointing out that postpartum depression is a condition where symptoms such as crying, restlessness, inner distress, anxiety attacks, and concern about not being able to care for the baby last for a long time, Prof. Beştepe said, “If symptoms last longer than two weeks and negatively affect a person's functionality, it is called depression.”

Noting that there is no separate definition for ‘postpartum depression’, Prof. Beştepe explained, “It is considered a sub-indicator of major depression and covers the first four-week period. However, the common clinical opinion of obstetrics and gynecology and psychiatry clinics is that the condition can extend up to six months. A woman experiencing psychological distress within the first six months after the baby's birth always requires clinical attention, and the probability of depression is quite high.”

**Postpartum depression is a serious condition and requires medical intervention! **

Clarifying the difference between postpartum blues and depression, Prof. Engin Emrem Beştepe concluded his remarks as follows:

“The most fundamental difference is that postpartum depression is much more severe and lasts longer. This condition can truly be diagnosed as major depression. Postpartum blues, on the other hand, is short-lived, seen in the majority of women, and can be easily overcome with strong social support and family help. Postpartum depression is a serious condition, requires medical intervention, and must be treated by a psychiatrist.”
