## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “In fact, every physician is a leader candidate” **

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who delivered a speech titled “Secrets to Being a Good Doctor,” offered important advice to 5th-year students. Tarhan stated; “In fact, every physician is a leader candidate. Those who can manage themselves can also manage their relationships. Those who learn to manage themselves can easily manage their patients. They manage their relationships. They manage their private lives. They manage their social lives. In essence, the social and emotional skills we try to learn in schools are rooted in self-management skills. Then comes relationship management skills.”

## **“66% of Failures Stem from Communication Accidents” **

Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of adherence to scientific and ethical standards in being a good physician, said; “In studies conducted at Harvard in the USA, 66% of failures stem from communication accidents. Communication with third parties in team collaboration is important here. If these communications are healthy, errors are fewer. When communication errors are few, medical success increases. Very successful individuals might make a very simple mistake, and their career can be turned upside down. That’s why in every task, you need to pay attention to whether it adheres to scientific and ethical standards.”

## **“One who cannot find joy in helping others cannot be a physician”**

Tarhan also drew attention to the qualities expected from those who wish to become physicians; “For a physician, the patient's best interest is paramount. If someone who wants to be a physician does not want to help people or do good deeds, we tell them not to become a physician, because they cannot. If they have already succeeded, then they should enter fields like laboratory work. In other words, I believe that someone who cannot find joy in doing good for and helping patients cannot be a physician. If you say ‘I can’t do it,’ I strongly recommend choosing a field that does not involve direct patient contact.”

## **First Human Competence, Then Professional Competence…**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, underlining the importance of considering the patient's best interest in medicine, said; “First human competence, then professional competence. If you always say ‘me, me, me,’ you will be alone. The first step is the patient; if healthcare professionals work together for the patient's well-being, an alliance is formed in their treatment. The leader of this alliance here is the healthcare professional. The leader of the therapeutic relationship, in the identity of treatment, is the physician. That is, the therapeutic relationship begins from the first encounter between the healthcare professional and the patient. This understanding forms today's good physician.”

## **Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak: “What you will truly learn is the master-apprentice relationship”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hikmet Koçak, focusing on the topic “Points to Consider in Clinical Practices,” said; “Not everything is written in books. You read what is written, you see it, but what you will truly learn is the master-apprentice relationship. You will learn the art from our professors. You will learn the behavioral aspect. You will also learn how you are perceived from the patient's perspective, rather than just your own. For you, it might be a very simple incident. Perhaps an injury, a scratch on the skull, but because there is a lot of bleeding, in the patient's eyes, it means significant blood loss. You might think of it as a minor scratch, but the patient does not see it that way. Nor do the patient's relatives. Therefore, you will understand the patient's psychology, what the patient in front of you and their relatives expect, and you need to understand them empathetically.”

## **Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur: “If you leave a gap, it's unpredictable where a physician might concede a 'goal'”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Faculty of Medicine Dean Prof. Dr. Haydar Sur, offering advice to medical students, spoke about how students should not fall into the misconception throughout their lives that physical health is more important than mental health. Sur said; “Psychosomatic illnesses are far more numerous than imagined. Many conditions that cause physical malfunction also have psychological and environmental incompatibilities at their root. Therefore, mental health is at least as important as physical health. Let's emphasize this first. The wall of intellect, the wall of consciousness, the wall of logic. No missing building block should remain from that wall of consciousness; therefore, every one-week internship and two-month internship we undertake is equally important to me. If you leave a gap, it’s unpredictable where a physician might concede a 'goal'.”

Faculty of Medicine Semester-5 Coordinator Prof. Dr. İsmet Teoman Benli informed students on topics such as “Semester-5 Internships, General Guide and Internship Guides, Internship Programs, Internship Transcripts, Internship Locations, and Exams.” Benli stated; “The semester consists of minor internships built upon fundamental branches.”
