## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that there is a void in the human soul waiting for satisfaction, and this void is filled with a goal, meaning, and purpose, saying, 'If we cannot find meaning, purpose, or a reason to fill that void in our soul waiting for satisfaction, we cannot fill it. In this situation, people who say there is no meaning to life, suicide cases, depressions, and many other cases emerge in this way.' Tarhan added that whoever has a reason to live adds meaning to their life, stating, 'That reason adds meaning to life.' ## **'A person with a reason to live adds meaning to their life'**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, made evaluations regarding the relationship between purpose and meaning.

## **What distinguishes humans from other living beings: The search for meaning**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that it is very important for a person to have a purpose in terms of the meaning of life, and that the most important difference distinguishing humans from other living beings emerges here. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said, 'One of our patients had decided to commit suicide. When I asked, "Why do you want to commit suicide, why did you lose your meaning and purpose in life?" he replied, "I don't have a reason to live right now." If a person has no reason to live, they think, "I'll die now and get it over with, rather than die 10 years later." Whoever has a reason to live adds meaning to their life; that reason adds meaning to life. There is a very important difference between humans and other living beings. Other living beings live to eat, drink, reproduce, and shelter. That is the meaning of life for them. They do not search for meaning.'

## **Humans have a gene for seeking novelty and perceiving death**

Tarhan noted that humans have abstract meaning in four areas, which are called metacognitive perceptions, saying, 'These are also called metacognitive desires. A gene related to this is being researched. There are genetic codes. The gene for the desire for meaning, the genetic code related to the search for meaning, is being researched. Second, the gene for seeking novelty. The gene for seeking novelty exists in humans. In hyperactive individuals, this gene becomes more active. A third gene is the gene for perceiving death. No living being other than humans knows they will die. No living being other than humans has a fear of death. Other living beings eat, drink, reproduce, live, and die. But humans know they will die. The fourth is the gene related to the perception of time. No living being other than humans thinks about the past and future; they think about today, about satisfying their hunger.'

## **Psychiatrist Frankl developed meaning therapy**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that unless meaning is ascribed to death, it turns into torture. He mentioned that the famous writer Tolstoy is said to have sought meaning when he couldn't change the reality of death. In psychiatry, there is Victor Emil Frankl, who created a psychotherapy school related to the search for meaning. Frankl developed logotherapy, a theory that individuals can endure hardships only through the search for meaning and purpose in life. The 'logo' in the word logotherapy means 'meaning.' Frankl managed to escape the Holocaust with his family when Jews were persecuted and suffered terribly. Later, he became a psychiatrist and settled in America. In his logotherapy theory, he says, 'Humans must struggle to reach the essences that will make life valuable.' This is the meaning of life; this is the search for meaning. He says we need to reach the essence that will make life valuable. This essence exists within humans; this is the desire for meaning.

## **There is a void in the human soul waiting for satisfaction…**

Tarhan noted that there is a void in the human soul waiting for satisfaction, and this void is filled with a goal, meaning, and purpose, saying, 'That is, if we cannot find meaning and purpose or a reason to fill that void in our soul waiting for satisfaction, we cannot fill it. In this situation, people who say there is no meaning to life, suicide cases, depressions, and many other cases emerge in this way.' Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that modernism today has taken the meaning of life from humans, saying, 'Modernism tells humans, "You only came to this world once." People become selfish, young people don't want to get married.'

## **Purposes add meaning to life**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan noted that purpose and meaning are intertwined, saying, 'It is about a person imagining things that can be a vision. A person should say, "I will be here in 10 years, I have this goal in 10 years." Because purpose and meaning are together. That vision adds meaning to the person's work because they have a goal. You do things to reach that goal. What kind of person do you want to be at the end of your life? For example, this is a goal. What kind of mark do you want to leave on life at the end of your life, what kind of legacy do you want, how do you want to be remembered? What do you want written on your tombstone? These are goals. These add meaning to life. If you don't care what happens after you die, then a chaos of meaning arises. An intellectual crisis arises.'

## **Meaning and purpose develop with a person's choice**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that a person's imagination is personal and unique to each individual, saying, 'Therefore, meaning and purpose are individual. They arise from our free will and depend on our choices. They develop according to what we choose. Humans have psychological capital and intellectual capital. A person's intellectual capital enables them to carry, solve, relax today, and also be successful and productive. Some people, by thinking about the past or the future, dissipate their current mental and intellectual capital into the past and future, weakening their present. That is why some philosophers have written "today" and placed it on their tables. To not miss today if they get lost in the past and future... To immediately turn to today... The widely used phrase "live the moment" should actually be "live in the moment."

## **A purposeless person gets lost**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said that a person who can imagine their future will have set a goal in their life. Tarhan said, 'A person has an ego ideal. By forming expectations towards that ego ideal and managing those expectations, a person makes more accurate decisions. A purposeless person, like a ship that has left port and does not know where it is going or has no compass, goes wherever the wind takes it and eventually either gets lost or capsizes. If a person has no purpose, a roadmap cannot be formed, meaning they have no compass. Events drag them along. One day they act one way, today another way, and tomorrow differently. However, a person with a purpose knows how to say no, can seize opportunities, and can move in the right direction. Not being given a specific purpose is related to being given free will. Humans will choose for themselves. This is something that comes from creation. It makes humans different from other living beings. You can choose the good path or the bad path. You can be skilled in crime, or you can be respectful of laws and rules. Life is actually a choice.'

## **One who can act decisively, consistently, and continuously is strong**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that there should be an abstract goal pyramid in one's life, saying, 'At the top of the goal pyramid are abstract goals. After that, material goals should be placed. There is a definition of being strong. Strength is defined based on material possessions or physical structure, whereas in a psychological sense, one who is strong and determined is strong. One who can act decisively, consistently, and continuously is strong. A person who acts one way one day and another way the next is not strong. Manipulative events control a person without goals, but the other has a goal. They cannot be used while going towards the goal; they progress by making correct decisions. Therefore, a person who is decisive, consistent, and continuous is strong. The greatest strength in life is consistency. If a person manages to act consistently, they overcome many difficulties more easily and reach their goal very easily if they have one.'

## **Determination is very important for success**

'Nothing in the world is as effective in success as determination,' said Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, adding, 'Talent alone is not effective. The most effective thing that leads to success is determination. If a person thinks they are not successful, they are not determined enough; there is no consistency. Therefore, determination is very important for success in life. Success is also a purpose in life, but to succeed by making others unhappy is evil. If a person reduces success only to their own happiness, they are also a malevolent person. Therefore, being benevolent and being able to succeed in such situations means that one has social capital. It builds trust in their environment. Social capital is as important as financial capital.'

## **Strengths and weaknesses must be known**

Tarhan stated that it is also important for a person to know their strengths and weaknesses while progressing on life's path, saying, 'To give meaning to life, we will conduct a SWOT analysis on ourselves. Economists use SWOT analysis a lot; we also use it in positive psychology. One should know their strengths and weaknesses. After setting a goal, a person will know the threats and opportunities while moving towards that goal. This situation can be likened to a commander gathering intelligence and making evaluations to determine the best course of action on the battlefield. They try to understand both their own and the enemy's weaknesses and strengths.'

## **The War of Independence was also won with the same tactic**

A very good strategy was created. In the War of Independence, Kazım Karabekir, Fevzi Çakmak, and Rauf Orbay were excellent staff officers; they were Ottoman pashas. They were very well-trained. They used all their military knowledge.

Mustafa Kemal's courage as a military leader was a huge factor there. In fact, while discussing the war plan in Afyon, a colonel who was a teacher at the war academy said, 'Pasha, if we implement this operation plan, the assembly will execute all of us.' Upon that, Mustafa Kemal said something to his own teacher: 'If there is one person to be executed, it is me, do not worry, I am taking this risk, let's implement the operation plan.' This is determination. That is why this leadership in the War of Independence is very important. Without this leadership, if it were a timid, hesitant leadership, a leader who did not say 'Either Independence or Death,' we would not have won that war. Therefore, a determined, consistent, and continuous leadership is very important. We commemorated the liberation of Izmir on September 9th on this occasion. Turkey experienced a very important historical turning point 100 years ago. A person who does not know the meaning of that day cannot live today with enthusiasm, cannot do justice to today, cannot appreciate it. We owe a debt to our founding leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, all his comrades-in-arms, and everyone in Anatolia; we must not forget this.'
