## Özet

**Emphasizing that artificial intelligence technologies will eliminate the need for a physician's wisdom, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made striking predictions about the detection and treatment process of diseases with computer technologies. Tarhan said; 'Artificial intelligence studies that will make the patient speak, read thoughts such as fear, sadness, joy, happiness, and shame from facial expressions, especially in the emotional face style, and consequently report the person's mood will begin to be used in the near future. Nevertheless, it is not very possible for these applications to replace a therapist or a specialist. In other words, the specialist will still make the final decision, but these developments will reduce our need for wisdom. Artificial intelligence will easily be able to provide this wisdom and transfer of experience.'**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan participated as a speaker in the Symposium on Technology Applications in Psychology. Tarhan, who made evaluations under the title “Psychology in the Digital Age” in the online symposium, drew attention to various studies on the brain carried out in recent years and stated that the brain has recently entered the realm of science. Tarhan said; “Psychiatry, as the branch of psychology dealing with pathology, is a seriously computational field. The working method of the human brain has been within the reach of science in recent years. The basic working model related to the functioning of the human brain, the principle of connectivity, is being explained. For example, how does the heart work, what is its normal function? The heart pumps, receives blood, contracts in a certain way, and continuously pumps. It does this 60-70 times a minute. By measuring the basic functions of the heart, interventions related to the treatment of diseases can be made. However, how the human brain works has only recently begun to be understood; more concrete, evidence-based information on this subject has emerged in approximately the last 15-20 years. According to this evidence-based information, the human brain currently receives information from both inside and outside, transmits it electrically and chemically, calculates, stores, and uses it when necessary. Our brain has the functions of learning, storing, and using. Just as the heart's function is pumping, the brain also does this, and our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors emerge in this way. Our brain has an attention radar; in our daily lives, we use the information in the brain region where we direct this attention radar. There is such a working system, and the first serious scientific study related to this working system started in the 2000s, specifically in 2005. Especially in Switzerland, the 'Blue Brain' team made new initiatives. This was a study that combined genetic algorithms with neural networks and human behavior. There is a definition by the Blue Brain team that the functioning of brain activities is like building and then dismantling a sandcastle. These findings revealed a promising new perspective on how the brain works.”

Tarhan stated that after the meeting held in Davos, it was claimed that the world was heading towards a digital dictatorship, and he emphasized that digitalization, the digital age, began with this research. Tarhan said; “Clicks and Kevins are formed in our brain, and some small circuits are created. With these, an algebraic topology emerges in the brain. It points to the unique signature of firing, and each piece of information in the brain works like a sandcastle, scattering and reassembling in the form of a separate signature. We mentioned Switzerland's brain initiative started in 2005 with IBM at the University of Lausanne, referred to as the Blue Gene project, and the results of this project were presented in Davos in 2018, regarding artificial intelligence and the metaverse, where it was argued that the world is heading towards a digital dictatorship. Based on this research, we observed that the famous digitalization, the digital age, had begun. In this digital age, there are supercomputers, designed models, simulations, and new approaches are emerging to understand the brain's very intricate structure and function. This project is still ongoing. Now, the innovative research strategies in this project measure molecular and micro circuits, and brain regions, on the brain's very intricate organs, using the connectivity of experimental data, and obtaining dense maps of the brain as a mapping method. These simulation behaviors, forming the basis of supercomputers, transform understanding the brain into a tractable problem, enabling complex interaction at different levels of brain organization. Thus, a new tool has emerged that examines cross-level connections extending from genes to cognition, that is, from genes to the teaching of thought.”

## ** ![](https://cdn.uha.com.tr/content/images/6-230529111404.png)“Developing the muscles in the frontal lobe makes us human”**

Tarhan stated that human characteristics emerge from developments in the prefrontal lobe, emphasizing that the development of muscles here leads to the development of traits like leadership. Tarhan said; “Humans are born psychologically premature. A duck can swim immediately after birth, but a human walks at one year old and can only perform cost-benefit analysis at 15. Developing the muscles in the frontal lobe can make us human, mentally healthy, or a sick or healthy leader. The hypothesis defined as 24 values and 6 virtues, with 1/3 genetic and 2/3 related to environment and personal choices, has neural correlates. The left hemisphere of the brain is concerned with logic, reasoning, analysis, calculation, while the right hemisphere is concerned with emotion, excitement, music, and art. The left brain is masculine, the right brain is feminine. The prefrontal cortex balances the two; there is such a working system. The abstract values we refer to, what makes us human, all character strengths, have a significant distribution between this rational and emotional brain. In fact, the spiritual structure is not independent of the brain. Its pathological dimension, meaning its reflection on disease, i.e., Alzheimer's in genetics and the increase in activity with volume reduction, is important. A decrease in the Theta-Beta ratio - findings are also shown in MRI - all of these, neuroimaging methods P300 and N50 waves are very interesting. An evoked potential is given to a person, meaning a 'do-don't' command. 'Do' is a positive command, 'don't' is a negative command. The brain responds to a negative command after 50 milliseconds, and to a positive command after 300 milliseconds. This means the brain perceives negative commands 6 times faster. If the brain is giving commands, then the question arises: 'Is the real commander a holographic brain above the brain?' It can be said that the mind makes the brain implement.”

## **“Science's arrow signs point to monotheistic belief”**

Tarhan stated that science's arrow signs point to a single God, and he predicted that science would reveal more studies explaining this in the coming years. Tarhan said; “Beliefs definitely affect human behavior; that is, a person accepts what they believe as a stereotype and reacts by referencing it. Therefore, it is important for beliefs to be strong. If a person believes in superstitions, they make wrong decisions, and there are personal belief scales, which we call PPQ. By applying these scales, one can identify their erroneous beliefs, faulty stereotypes, negative repetitions, positive repetitions, and obsessions, and then compensatory therapies are attempted accordingly. This is a very important area for finding answers to human questions about life and existence. A computer is the marriage of mathematics and logic. So, what happens if psychology and mathematics marry? It discovers new areas through reasoning methods. In my opinion, the marriage of psychology with mathematics, and also spirituality with mathematics, leads us to the necessity of an external, monotheistic creator. In this world, an external will, an external power, an external intelligence is required. Therefore, there is a power, a will that created this world. It is necessary to approach this with the dialectic of examination. In the understanding of the dialectic of examination, this is, of course, an existential, ontological discussion, but here you can definitely see it through reason; that is, you cannot see it with physical eyes. Currently, the arrow signs of science indicate that there should be a single God. We can say that science will explain this even more in the coming years.”

## **“Artificial intelligence technologies will eliminate the need for a physician's wisdom in the treatment process” **

“Emphasizing that artificial intelligence technologies will eliminate the need for a physician's wisdom in the treatment process, Tarhan made striking statements about the detection and treatment process with computer technologies. Tarhan said; 'With the team we established 4-5 years ago, we plan to treat phobias with artificial intelligence. We are considering working on fear of heights and fear of insects. We use artificial intelligence with virtual glasses in fear treatment, and it is quite effective for phobias. There is a field of psychiatry known as "Preparation Medicine." In that area, a professor presented studies and results related to the use of artificial intelligence in understanding how the heart works and how the human brain is a thinking and learning organ; they have done modeling. We already perform many tests digitally, including attention tests, but now there will be systems that will make the patient speak, read thoughts such as fear, sadness, joy, happiness, and shame from facial expressions, especially in the emotional face style, and consequently report the person's mood. These are applications that will happen in the near future, but it is not very possible for them to replace a therapist or a specialist. In other words, the specialist will still make the final decision, but these developments will reduce our need for wisdom. When people get sick, they won't have to go door-to-door for their treatments; that computer will come to prevent that, and it will easily provide the latest wisdom and transfer of much experience without the need to consult so many doctors or specialists. I believe computer technologies and artificial intelligence will provide this.'”
