## **Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Usta: “If we don't communicate well, we cannot speak their language”**

Yalova Governor Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Usta, who stated that he was newly appointed to Yalova and participating in his first program in the city, drew attention to the importance of communication. Usta said; “Administration is not a duty, but a position. You must be in healthy communication with your students. Secondly, communication established with parents is also extremely valuable; strong communication should be maintained here too. Our children are now very smart and can access information very easily. Therefore, we must communicate very well with them. Otherwise, we cannot speak their language.”

## **Aytekin Yılmaz: “Communication is one of the most important pillars of the two focus areas”**

Yalova Provincial Director of National Education Aytekin Yılmaz also stated in his speech; “Our educators must constantly strive intellectually and develop themselves throughout their professional lives. This ensures the healthy realization of the process we define as education. We have been trying to implement the Türkiye Century Education Model since last year. One of the main topics we have focused on for approximately two years is the monitoring and improvement of the processes related to the implementation of this model. Our second focus area is the Family Year initiatives we launched this year. Therefore, we prioritize these two headings in all our activities. Communication is one of the most important pillars of these two focus areas. It is not possible to create or sustain a school and classroom climate in an environment without communication. For this reason, we chose communication as the main topic.” he said.

Following the opening speeches, the "Communication and Management Skills" talk took place under the moderation of journalist Şaban Özdemir.

## **Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan: “It is necessary to instill a serotonin-focused educational approach in the brain”**

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who spoke about how information can be made permanent, said; “The brain does not work solely with a reward-punishment system. Reward and punishment are not the only tools for motivation. The reward-punishment system is related to dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is short-term, fast-acting, and pleasure-oriented. However, another important way of motivation is meaning-making, the process of assigning and producing meaning… When the brain makes sense of a topic, this process is related to serotonin. Serotonin is secreted slowly and late, but it creates a lasting effect. Therefore, it is necessary to instill a serotonin-focused educational approach in the brain, which means meaning-oriented learning. For this, learning through experience is important. When learned in a fun but disciplined way, information becomes permanent.” he began his words.

## **“In the old understanding, there was power-oriented leadership”**

Tarhan, stating that project-oriented education models are developing worldwide, said; “Project-based education has begun. The Türkiye Century Education Model is actually a delayed example of this. Today, the applicability of this model has increased our teachers' workload. Our teachers' job became more difficult, but at the same time, an opportunity arose to develop young people who keep up with the times. Because in classroom leadership, the old understanding involved power-oriented leadership; the class was managed with authority. Now, however, there is a leadership approach focused on stewardship rather than power. That is, classroom management or any area of leadership is not a place where one says, 'Let me demonstrate my power.' It is about being able to say, 'This has been entrusted to me. There is a responsibility here, and I must manage it according to this stewardship.' This approach is a perspective that views humans not as Homo Economicus but as Homo Psychologicus.” he said.

## **“The human brain is in search of four fundamental things…”**

Tarhan, stating that short-term thoughts lead to mistakes, said; “The human brain is in search of four fundamental things. The first is the quest for eternity; the human brain desires eternity. The second is the quest for freedom. No other living creature possesses this besides humans. The quest for eternity and the quest for freedom are unique to humans. Due to the desire for freedom, human needs are limitless, but their power is limited. Because what is called freedom always means 'more' and 'further'. The human brain wants to eliminate loneliness, it wants connection. It also seeks meaning. The human brain wants to make sense of everything. This need for meaning-making gave rise to studies on how the human brain works, and these studies formed the basis of artificial intelligence. The individuals who received awards in the field of artificial intelligence in 2024 were a geneticist and a psychologist, specifically a cognitive psychologist. This surprised everyone. AI studies received awards in a field that seemed like a physics award. However, these artificial neural networks have been studied for about 20 years. They revealed that the brain works algorithmically by persistently focusing on the idea with determination. The brain scans the past and works like a machine that generates predictions about the future. It predicts the future and makes decisions for the present. People who can write the best and most meaning-producing scenarios make correct decisions. Those who think short-term make mistakes, while those who think medium and long-term make healthier decisions.” he stated.

## **“Thinking children are suitable for the spirit of this era”**

Tarhan, stating that jungle law is not valid in this era, said; “In jungle law, the powerful dictate. In an environment where people live, the powerful should not dictate. Issues should be resolved through communication. A culture of communication and consultation should be formed. Instead of seeing every problem as a threat, one should see every problem as an an opportunity for development. That is, when a manager encounters a problem, they should not say, ‘Oh, another problem has arisen.’ When a student brings a problem, this problem has a threatening aspect, but also an opportunity aspect. So, what could be the opportunity aspect? Rest assured, every problem-solving process provides a person with something akin to a project. They are all opportunities for development. A child falling and getting up is also a problem, but from it, they learn to walk. Similarly, instead of the culture of ‘Don't ask, don't think, obey,’ the understanding of ‘Ask, think, understand, then obey’ should be established. Children who ask questions and think are suitable for the spirit of this era. If there is a child who is like a lamb, that child will inevitably cause problems in the future. They will miss out on innovation. They will always be second. For an individual to be assertive, entrepreneurial, and innovative, they must be questioning.” he said.

## **“80% of the human brain transmits information through verbal communication”**

Tarhan, stating that social media does not fully reflect communication, said; “Approximately 20% of the human brain is involved in verbal communication, that is, spoken communication and information transfer. And 80% is non-verbal communication. Non-verbal communication consists of elements such as tone of voice, subconscious emphases, micro-expressions, gestures, and body language. This 80% carries the main burden of communication. The information transferred itself is only 20%. This is scientifically proven, neuroscience-based information in the field of communication. Communication in today's virtual world does not fully reflect this. It's called social media, but in reality, it's not truly social communication; it's more virtual communication. Technology has indeed accelerated things, but while technology provides speed, values provide direction. When driving in traffic, road signs show where to turn and what to do. If a young person lacks values, they become a victim of technology. If they have values, they know where to direct the speed of technology and how to use it. For example, when people make decisions, there is a mental jury in our brains. This jury constantly asks questions: ‘To do or not to do? Appropriate or inappropriate? Safe or unsafe? Useful or useless? Should I be compassionate or selfish?’ Above these questions, there is also a mental judge who makes the decision, and the person takes action.” he said.

## **“The fundamental parameter of love is interest”**

Tarhan, explaining the importance of empathic listening, said; “What establishes healthy communication is an educator using a trust-based communication language, not a fear-based one. For a young person to love a subject, they must first love their teacher. When they love the teacher, they will also love the subject. So, how do they love the teacher? When the teacher loves the student… but love is not saying, ‘I love you.’ The fundamental parameter of love is interest. It is about communicating with them, listening to them, being an active listener and an empathic listener. If there is no empathic listening, listening without eye contact, without approving what is said intermittently, or without repetition, is not empathic. Very intelligent young people understand this very easily. In this case, a communication breakdown occurs. Communication can be brief but must be qualitative. If we can achieve this, we become a role model for young people. This approach applies to parents as well as educators…” he stated.

## **“Technology provides speed, but values provide direction”**

Tarhan, who spoke about the necessity of seeing values like a compass, said; “Currently, important studies are being conducted on the 4-6 age group, especially in the Far East, in China and Japan. In this age range, instead of simply loading information, educational models are being implemented that strongly teach values and instill an ethics of virtue. For example, in Japan, two values are given particular importance. One of them is the feeling of shame, and the other is the feeling of compassion. These two feelings are social emotions, and the education of these emotions is emphasized. If a person has a sense of compassion, if a sense of pity for others has developed, and if they have a sense of shame, they can say no to evil. If these are absent, if they are merciless, cruel, and a shameless personality has developed, they can do anything. Therefore, these two emotions are key emotions. They are social emotions that form empathy and enable setting boundaries in human relationships. A child between 4-6 years old is taught that even a fish in an aquarium can die one day. A child who encounters this reality of life at an early age becomes able to tolerate greater stresses later on. Therefore, values should be seen like a compass. Technology provides speed, but values provide direction. What is needed here is not just values education, but value-integrated education. These values can even be integrated into mathematics and physics. All lessons must include examples, cases, event connections, or presentations related to these values.” he said.

## **“The goal is not to persuade, but to try to understand”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, who pointed out that empathy and sympathy are often confused, said; “What is sympathy? If someone is crying, it is sitting and crying with them. This is not empathy. This means buying their emotions. However, empathy is not buying the other person's emotions. In empathy, we know the person's emotions, but we also know our own emotions. That is, we become emotionally literate. We recognize the emotions of the other person, notice the social cues of events, and we know this: ‘We are a separate person, and they are a separate person.’ Empathy is not putting yourself in their shoes, but being able to look from their perspective. When you put yourself in their shoes, you take on that burden. However, empathy is not taking on this burden. Empathy is being able to look at an event not just from one side of the table, but also from the other side, and to make decisions accordingly. This can only happen with empathic communication. It happens by listening, by trying to understand. The classical approach is generally focused on persuasion. However, the goal here is not to persuade, but to try to understand. For this, an approach that can ask the question ‘why?’ is needed. For example, as a motivation technique, the question ‘why?’ is very important. In empathic communication, the question ‘why?’ is more valuable than the question ‘how?’ ‘How will I communicate?’ is a technical question, but ‘Why do I need to communicate with this person? Why do I need to solve this problem?’ are the first steps of communication.” he said.

## **“Every difficulty has been an opportunity for development for us”**

Tarhan, also answering questions from participants, pointed out that burnout can lead to new discoveries and opportunities, and added: “We are not a society that falls into despair. There has always been a result, a way out, to keep the feeling of hope alive. Culturally, every difficulty has been an opportunity for development for us. Therefore, even burnout leads to new discoveries and new opportunities for us. We see that every difficulty is followed by a great ease, a great opportunity. What truly exhausts a person in burnout is hopelessness and pessimism. Therefore, our goal must be clear without falling into hopelessness and pessimism. If we believe in a profession for which we will labor, tire, and endure hardship; if we believe in our work, rest assured that educating is a sacred profession. Because when you touch a child, you are planting seeds in their developing soul. An educator means someone who plants seeds in an ever-developing soul. These are not just the theoretical knowledge you impart. The communication you establish in class, the experiences you share, allow young people to accumulate memories with you. Those accumulated memories emerge as a value, a guiding element in their lives in later years. Therefore, being able to accumulate beautiful experiences and memories with young people is extremely valuable for a precious educator.” he concluded.
