## **“The foundation of our personality is laid in childhood”**

Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that childhood is the period when the human soul is shaped; “The foundation of our personality is laid in childhood. A person's homeland is childhood. In other words, childhood is the homeland of our soul. It is where our soul is shaped and develops. Just as a person feels an attachment to their homeland, they feel the same attachment or hatred towards their childhood. Or, their mind is very confused regarding their childhood. Childhood is very important for human development. What is good and what is bad is determined by the truths of the era. That is, there are fundamental truths, but the conditions of our time also determine good and bad.”

## **“A child who is a victim at a young age becomes the perpetrator later in life”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “The developing soul of children is unprotected and vulnerable. They learn life under the guidance of their parents. In other words, if a child is subjected to pressure, fear, threats, intimidation, beating, or a harsh educational method at a young age, that child, who is a victim at a young age, will become the perpetrator later in life.” He continued his words as follows:

“If a child has a high sense of autonomy, they start to defy their parents after the age of 10. They do the exact opposite of what their parents say. For example, the parent wants their child to be successful, but the child becomes lazy. The parent wants their child to be religious, but the child becomes the complete opposite. The child, in a way, punishes their family. They are actually taking revenge on their parents. A child raised without love and compassion, subjected to violence, becomes a criminal type, antisocial. They are raised without love and discipline.”

## **“Most perpetrators of crime are those who grew up without love in their childhood…”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, emphasizing the importance of the balance between love and discipline in childhood; “Most perpetrators of crime are children who were raised without love and compassion, threatened and frightened in their childhood. If there is little love and much discipline, this happens. The child becomes low in self-confidence, passive, fearful, timid. A type of person emerges who is passively managed with ‘Obey, be at ease.’ There is no love; they are raised by being crushed. This exists in fear cultures, in Eastern cultures. In other words, there is no feeling of compassion. Humans have a tendency to be compassionate and empathetic, but it does not develop if they do not find the right environment. Because humankind is born with the capacity for infinite good and infinite evil,” he said.

## **“The worst trauma is the trauma of indifference”**

Stating that ignoring a child can create a traumatic effect, Tarhan said; “The worst trauma in a child is the trauma of indifference. Ignoring a child, lack of love, and ignorance have a traumatic effect on the child. That is, if they say something, they don't listen; if they ask a question, they don't answer – these are also forms of ignoring. These are also forms of indifference. In fact, there is a concept called 'distant abandonment' related to this. The mother is not working, in the same house, but doesn't make time for the child. She feeds the child, then gives herself over to television. She doesn't pay attention to the child. They are side by side, but the woman is constantly busy with her phone or watching a series. As a result of this situation, there are mothers who are not even aware of any of their child's needs.”

## **“Parents are the most important attachment element for a child”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, noting that if the need for attachment is not met, related diseases can emerge; “Parents are the most important attachment element for a child. They meet the need for attachment. Just as eating and drinking are needs, that is, if our body doesn't receive Vitamin C or Vitamin B, diseases occur, similarly, if children's need for attachment cannot be met, related diseases emerge. Initially, the attachment object is the mother. As the child grows, the father also becomes an attachment object along with the mother. As they grow, it becomes toys, siblings, society, humanity, the universe, and the Creator. Humans have a need for attachment because they are relational beings. When they satisfy that need for attachment, they find peace. For example, people cannot satisfy their need for attachment at the moment of death. Modernism teaches us to live by forgetting death. But death is such a reality that it cannot be forgotten. People give themselves to entertainment, movies, alcohol, trying to forget, but the reality of death remains. In such a situation, a person who believes in a life after death and gives meaning to the afterlife, because they satisfy their need for attachment, experiences old age very beautifully. They achieve the inner peace that their faith provides.”

## **“Overprotective parenting is thought to be a virtue in our culture”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that feelings of overprotection and excessive control create a traumatic effect on children; “Overprotective parenting is thought to be a virtue in our culture. It's perceived as good motherhood, good fatherhood. Quite the opposite. For example, they even control the child's breathing. We used to say helicopter parents, now we say drone parents. They constantly hover overhead, observing. The child goes to the toilet, and they knock on the door asking, ‘What are you doing?’ For example, they interfere with the child to this extent. This is an intrusive parenting style. The feeling of overprotection and excessive control has a traumatic effect on the child. That is also one of the important causes of future mental illnesses…”

## **“There is always an opportunity to beautify our inner world”**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that a person can recognize and resolve their own traumas; “Self-knowledge is the primary condition in therapy. In old psychology schools, there was no self-knowledge. ‘You are good, fix others.’ This was a wrong therapy technique. Now they have been abandoned. First, self-awareness, knowing oneself. Self-management, managing oneself. After that, social awareness, empathy, knowing other people. Then comes relationship management. If they are not like their own lawyer, they approach themselves like a prosecutor, but a fair one. If they can question themselves, for instance, if something happens to them, and they ask, ‘How much of this did I cause?’ then this person can easily correct themselves. Childhood is the homeland, but it is not destiny; it can change. A person can make it more beautiful in their homeland. They can beautify that homeland again. Therefore, there is always an opportunity to beautify our inner world.”
