## Özet

**Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Tarhan, stating that psychological resilience can be developed at an early age, said, “Children should be taught budget management until the age of 10. After 10, it's too late. Children should not get everything they want immediately. Giving chocolate when they finish homework, teaching them to wait is necessary. This instills the skill of delayed gratification.”**

**Prof. Dr. Tarhan, stating that money is a power, said, “Money can be a power that liberates us, but it should not be at the center of life. It should be a tool, facilitate things, and prevent us from being dependent on anyone.” Prof. Dr. Tarhan also defined wealth, saying, “A rich person is not someone who has many things; it is someone who needs few things. If a person can be satisfied with what they have, they are rich. A person who is not satisfied with what they have cannot escape the feeling of poverty, no matter how much they earn.”**

Üsküdar Üniversitesi Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, evaluated the psychology of money in the “Nevzat Tarhan ile Akla Ziyan” program broadcast on EKOTÜRK screens.

## **First emotion is fear, first need is refuge**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the most basic human motivation is the “desire to feel good,” saying, “The human need to feel good is a biological drive. When a child is born from the womb, the first emotion they feel is fear. Because the mother’s womb is a comfortable environment, everything is ready. But as soon as they emerge into the world, cold air comes, and the baby cries. The first reaction is fear. Then the need for refuge arises. Even the mother’s scent comforts the child. In other words, human life, from the very first moment, is built upon the need to feel good and to seek refuge.”

## **The brain's reward system produces short-term pleasure**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that the brain’s reward mechanism operates via dopamine, saying, “The reward system in the brain works with the dopamine cycle. All addictions and virtual habits utilize this mechanism. Dopamine provides short-term pleasure but does not provide long-term satisfaction. Fulfilling desires and needs is not the same as long-term satisfaction. People should not settle for instant happiness; they should strive to feel good through the pursuit of long-term meaning.”

## **Psychological resource management is essential**

Emphasizing that feeling good requires a strategy, Prof. Dr. Tarhan continued his words as follows:

“A person should not deceive themselves by thinking, ‘I feel good right now.’ They should make mental investments to feel good 5-10 years later. For this, it is necessary to set goals and create a roadmap. Just as financial resources are managed, humans also have psychological capital. Emotional, social, and spiritual accumulations… These also need to be managed wisely. Humans are conscious beings; they possess not only self-awareness but also awareness of their environment, the world, the universe, and God. A person who manages their resources with this awareness makes a difference.”

## **Children should be taught budget management until the age of 10**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, stating that psychological resilience can be developed at an early age,

“Children should be taught budget management until the age of 10. After 10, it's too late. Children should not get everything they want immediately. Giving chocolate when they finish homework, teaching them to wait is necessary. This instills the skill of delayed gratification. Delayed gratification ensures the sustainable secretion of dopamine, and the child receives resilience training.” he stated.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also drew attention to a common mistake made by families, saying, “Giving a child what they want immediately when they cry satisfies the parents' ego but does not allow the child to learn anything. The child does not learn the distinction between needs and wants. This also increases the risk of addiction in the future.”

## **Credit cards give concrete pleasure, make you forget debt**

Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan evaluated today’s consumption habits and addressed individuals’ connections with money, pleasure, and relationships. Tarhan emphasized that the skill of “delayed gratification,” which should be learned from childhood, is critical in both financial and emotional capital management.

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that people today mostly lean towards concrete pleasure, saying, “People cannot distinguish between concrete pleasure and abstract satisfaction. When you shop with a credit card, you don't feel the money leaving at that moment. An instant pleasure is experienced, but future debt is not considered. However, if a person learns abstract satisfaction, that is, postpones today’s spending and saves for a future goal, they succeed in managing their abstract feelings instead of concrete ones. Concrete pleasure is related to dopamine, while abstract satisfaction is related to serotonin.”

## **Children are not just made happy, they are prepared for life**

Reminding that children should start gaining financial awareness at an early age, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “Children should be taught budget management from a young age. They should not get things easily, they should learn to postpone their desires. It is the biggest mistake for parents to do everything their child says, thinking ‘is it more important than my child?’ Children are raised not to be made happy, but to be prepared for life. They should be able to be the captain of their own ship even when their parents are not around.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan noted that children can easily fall into the traps of brands and status, emphasizing that money is not only a medium of exchange but also a psychological symbol.

## **Trust is the biggest capital in trade**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that trust is the fundamental capital in both human relationships and the business world, saying, “The biggest capital in trade is trust. Individuals or institutions that are open, transparent, and accountable achieve sustainable success. If trust is lost, everything is lost.”

## **If we desire what is not needed, we are on the wrong path**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also touched upon spending habits, saying, “First, am I desiring something I don't need? Second, am I satisfied with what I have? If the answer to these questions is ‘no,’ then the person is on the wrong path. Unnecessary spending leads to guilt, and dissatisfaction constantly pushes one to want more. This situation can lead to shopping addiction.”

## **Money gives a person a sense of freedom**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that people who earn sufficient income feel free, saying, “Money gives a person a sense of liberation to feel successful, powerful, and to feel that they have status. If a person can meet their basic needs and is not dependent on anyone, they feel free. But if they start living by accumulating debt, the fear of loss takes over their life.”

## **Pathological parsimony is the product of fears**

Explaining the psychological dimension of the relationship with money, Prof. Dr. Tarhan said, “There are people who unplug the refrigerator at home, save even on their child’s milk and diapers. This is pathological parsimony. Such a relationship is one where fears dominate the money relationship. Our relationship with money is part of our relationship with life.”

## **Some people see money as a business card**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that some people use wealth as a means of displaying power, saying, “Some people see money as a business card. They appear with large cars, live ostentatiously, but are actually in debt. They live to send the message, ‘I haven't fallen, I'm still standing.’”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan gave Dolmabahçe Palace, built in the late Ottoman period, as an example of a wrong investment approach, saying, “In the 1850s, the Ottoman Empire incurred huge debts. But with these debts, the non-returnable Dolmabahçe Palace was built. This investment, made with gold at the time, was as valuable as the Eurasia Tunnel by today's calculations. This palace, built merely to send the message ‘we haven't fallen, we're still standing,’ accelerated the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.”

## **Money should be a tool, not at the center of life**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan, stating that money is a power, emphasized that it would enslave people if it became the center of life, and said, “Money can be a power that liberates us, but it should not be at the center of life. It should be a tool, facilitate things, and prevent us from being dependent on anyone. But a person who lives by incurring debt through open positions loses sleep and risks all their savings.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also touched upon budget management in companies, saying, “Independent auditors check whether companies are wasteful. Because saving and efficiency are essential. Efficiency is doing the job right, and effectiveness is doing the right job. If these are absent, resources are wasted.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan stated that the word ‘economy’ is of French origin and means saving, adding, “But the Arabic word ‘iktisat’ comes from the root of purpose. That is, first set your goal, then spend. A person without a goal makes greedy investments and uses money incorrectly like a compass.”

Prof. Dr. Tarhan also defined wealth, saying, “A rich person is not someone who has many things; it is someone who needs few things. If a person can be satisfied with what they have, they are rich. A person who is not satisfied with what they have cannot escape the feeling of poverty, no matter how much they earn.”

## **High-trust societies grow**

Prof. Dr. Tarhan underlined that the investment environment is directly related to trust, saying, “As Francis Fukuyama also stated, high-trust societies can predict the future. Where there are freedoms, people make long-term investments, and the system grows. But low-trust societies spend their resources on defense, building shelters. This is also waste.”

Stating that individuals and institutions should prioritize risk analysis to prepare for economic crises, Prof. Dr. Tarhan concluded his words by saying, “We usually manage crises when they arise, but we don't conduct risk analysis. However, thanks to risk analysis, measures can be taken before a crisis occurs. This is vital on both individual and societal scales.”
