## Özet

**Üsküdar University Founding Rector, Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan made remarkable assessments on the effect of Ramadan on human psychology during the “Psychology Talks from Existence to the Search for Meaning” program. Tarhan stated that fasting, one of the special acts of worship in Ramadan, adds awareness to human development and life, and naturally provides willpower training during this month. Tarhan said; “Consciousness is the human organ between the soul and the heart. Through consciousness, you become aware of yourself, the world, and the good and the bad.”**

## **“We should allow our body to fast once a year”**

In the program organized by the Conscience of the Age Club, Tarhan stated that it is necessary to perform a material and spiritual fast for a healthy life, and that the month of Ramadan is the most opportune time of the year for this fast. Tarhan said; “Obeying the heart and soul is difficult for the ego. The ego takes the reins in an unruly manner. The ego acts like a wild horse, behaving however it wishes. You must make it accept your leadership; if it does not accept you, you cannot control it. If you want to control your ego, the Ramadan fast is a great opportunity. There are two important recommendations: material and spiritual fasting. In terms of material fasting, a Japanese scientist who won the Nobel Prize in recent years proved autophagy. Autophagy is when cells, when starved, begin to burn unused, accumulated proteins and particles within themselves, thereby cleansing themselves. When the body burns them, it cleanses itself unknowingly, even repairing damage in DNA. It consumes those faulty proteins, tissues, and tissue particles formed in the DNA, and the cell renews itself in a way. When you create a sense of life-survival in cells, they regenerate. Similarly, in shocks and traumas, when the fear of death is experienced, these shocks become a life-survival stimulant for humans, and they begin to renew themselves, getting rid of laziness. Therefore, mistakes and misfortunes are actually an opportunity for us to renew ourselves, but we need to be prepared for them. We should allow our body such a fasting opportunity once a year, giving our cells a chance to renew themselves. When we do this, we prevent many diseases. It has a restorative effect both materially and spiritually. Spiritually, it gives us an opportunity to discipline our wild and primitive emotions that lead us astray.”

## **“Consciousness is the human organ between the soul and the heart”**

Tarhan stated that the month of Ramadan adds awareness to human life and naturally provides willpower training during this month. Tarhan said; “Consciousness is the human organ between the soul and the heart. Through consciousness, you become aware of yourself, the world, and the good and the bad. That's when you become conscious. Currently, research is being conducted into whether consciousness is a quantum mechanism. Because our brain does not have the feature of consciousness within it, it only has the feature of connecting with our brain, above our brain. The decision-making organ, the mind, is in the frontal region of our brain, but awareness, with our function called consciousness, is a function above the brain that gives commands to the brain. In blessed Ramadan, through fasting, one gets used to a kind of abstinence, striving for asceticism – that is, striving to stay hungry, eat little, learn to obey commands, and not attract diseases by filling the helpless weak stomach with food before digestion. That is, one acquires habits in Ramadan; this is what we call willpower training. You accustom your ego to this, you discipline your ego, you try not to disrupt your spiritual life. In Sufism, it is referred to as 'qillat-i ta'am', 'qillat-i manam', and 'qillat-i kalam'. That is, eat little, sleep little, and speak little. If you do these three, you evolve, meaning you develop.”

## **“We have been given the opportunity to gain an limitless life with limited power”**

Tarhan stated that humans were created as beings with limited powers, and he emphasized that humans have the opportunity to gain an limitless life with limited power. Tarhan said; “Misfortunes allow us to discipline haste and impatience. Mind, heart, soul are all one body together. In Ramadan, instead of carnal pleasures, people experience angelic and spiritual pleasures, such as helping others, cheering up the poor, helping disadvantaged people, or the joy of making a child happy. Our souls have pleasures, our egos' pleasures are gratification, while our souls' pleasures are tranquility. Is there anything more beautiful than inner peace when they achieve it? When you achieve inner peace, a person develops a feeling that all desires have been met, all needs satisfied, and personal boundaries have disappeared. When you feel a sense of unity with God, this is a feeling of trust. You can take refuge in Him and find comfort against something bad. It eliminates fear and anxiety about the future, the anxiety that something bad will happen, that ability to surrender to that divine will, but for this, one needs to understand one's own weakness, powerlessness, and inadequacy. Ramadan makes you feel ‘you are weak, you are a limited being’ but your needs are limitless. Especially psychologically, we have limitless desires; for example, we want to go to space, we want to realize our dreams, but our power is limited. We have been given the opportunity to gain an limitless life with limited power, and whether we use this opportunity or not has been told to us. Ramadan is a great opportunity, Laylat al-Qadr is a great opportunity. God gives us this opportunity; we will use our limited power for an limitless purpose and gain eternity.”

## **“Fasting in blessed Ramadan directly strikes the pharaonic aspect of the ego”**

Tarhan stated that acts of worship in Ramadan are the most effective way to control the ego; “The feeling of hunger is the most difficult emotion for a person to discipline. There is an obesity epidemic in the world. The top 3 countries with the highest obesity rates in the world are the USA, followed by Saudi Arabia and Turkey. The reason is that we cannot control our urge to eat. This is called food addiction. Turkey is Muslim, and so is Saudi Arabia, but as you see, Saudi Arabia is where the formal aspect of Islam is most prevalent, but it seems they cannot live its essence. This means there is no ego discipline. The Muslimness there is superficial, 'wardrobe Islam'. Everyone needs ego discipline. The ego does not want to recognize its Lord; pharaoh-like, it desires its own lordship. No matter how much torment is inflicted, that vein remains within it. But with hunger, that vein is broken. Thus, fasting in blessed Ramadan directly strikes and breaks the pharaonic aspect of the ego. It shows its helplessness, weakness, and poverty; diseases also show us that this body is not mine when our bodily comfort is disrupted. Death is near; I will lose this body. It tells us to know our limits, that our power is limited. This earthquake disaster, this pandemic disaster also show our helplessness, weakness, and poverty. What is helplessness? You want to do something but you are unable to reach your goal. Diseases and misfortunes show this. But Ramadan gives us this training, gives us preparation.” he said.

## **“A person is tested by what they value”**

Tarhan emphasized that trials do not come without reason, and he pointed out that fasting is one of the most important acts of worship for controlling the ego. Tarhan said; “A person is tested by what they value. Trials do not come out of nowhere. Trials are about whether we can manage ourselves. If we cannot manage ourselves, God tests us and draws us closer to Him. If we do this when we are healthy, why would God test us? God would say, 'This servant of mine already fasts, disciplines his ego, why should I test him?' Therefore, what is the supplication at the end of prayer and circumambulation? 'Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan' (Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter), you say in this prayer. One should not ask God for misfortune, nor say 'test me'; rather, good is sought in both worlds. Beauty and wealth are also a test now. If you use them in a good and beautiful way, why would God then send misfortune? The ego comes into line only with hunger; therefore, the hunger experienced in Ramadan is like medicine in terms of discipline. Willpower training means programming our brain. People with strong willpower can say no to mistakes, make correct decisions at the right time. They can act bravely; to be brave is not to put oneself in danger but to use one's intellect in times of danger. These people also do so; they use their intellect, act courageously, and do not hold back.”
