Making evaluations in the context of ‘Selfishness, the Virus of Depression,’ Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan****; “The greatest need of selfishness is accountability. ## **“The 21st century seems to need to be a century of wisdom”**

The program, held online, was moderated by Aydın Kayaer, Head of Education Branch at Gazi University. Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan, stating that young people with good character should be raised, said; “When raising a child, being intelligent and hardworking is not enough. They must be intelligent, hardworking, and benevolent. We need to raise young people who are among the good. First ourselves, then our children. We cannot be happy unless someone demands goodness. Yale University introduced a course called the Science of Happiness. The New York Times even reported on the science of goodness. Harvard introduced Positive Psychology as a course. Yale introduced it in 2018. We had introduced it in 2013. Therefore, this is a preventive mental health study against depression. It is about how selfishness, hedonism, and opportunism lead to depression. The past century was the century of information. The 21st century seems to need to be a century of wisdom.”

## **“Anxieties, fears, and post-pandemic growth were investigated with these studies”**

Emphasizing the importance of studies conducted during the pandemic, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “As Üsküdar Üniversitesi, we conducted research related to the pandemic process. We assigned it as master's theses to 25 individuals out of 6,318 people. As a result of this thesis, 6,318 people reported their studies, which we published as a book. With these studies, anxieties, fears, and post-pandemic growth were investigated. It was April 2021. We are currently saying 'let's do it again when the pandemic ends,' but the pandemic has only recently begun to subside. Hopefully, we can conduct a large study and compare it with similar ones. The rates were: the priority order of things I value in life changed by 59%, my interest in spiritual matters increased by 49%, I understood that I could cope with difficulties by 56%, I can accept things as they are by 56%, I started to attach more importance to my social relationships by 48%, I better understood the value of what I have by 74%. In other words, such a perception was formed during the lockdown period. The initial reaction of approximately 60% of our society was in this direction. This is a very good thing. That is, if people are like this, it means a decrease in incidents of social violence, an increase in empathy among people in society, and an increase in social peace. We hope to produce policies to increase this.”

## **“Turkey is going through a serious test”**

Speaking about the effects of narcissism on selfishness, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “I used to call the civilization crisis a Western civilization crisis, but now it has become a global civilization crisis. The reason we call it California Syndrome is that it is very widespread there. It is spreading from there to the world. Now this is hedonism, that is, pleasure-seeking. Modernism chose the pursuit of pleasure as an ego ideal. It makes a person who considers pleasure as the purpose of life. In their marriage, their spouse becomes chronically ill, and they say 'I only came to the world once,' and leave their spouse. This has also started to happen a lot here. It is a personality given entirely by selfishness. It is selfishness becoming a personality. A book called 'The Narcissism Epidemic' has now been published. I had that book brought from America. Narcissism is spreading very rapidly. That is, in narcissism, there is seeing oneself as superior, inability to empathize, and skill in crime. At this point, qualified fraud is very common. The person wants to control everything. They feel special and are extremely opportunistic. Even among those we call traditional, conservative people, this 'wardrobe Islam' has increased. You look at them outwardly, they are Muslim, but they live with capitalist ethics. Examples of these have also started to increase significantly. Turkey is going through a serious test.”

## **“High-security societies are societies with high freedom and justice”**

Stating that things that appear wrong are actually part of perfection, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “In an environment without freedom, there is no innovation or entrepreneurship. It is no coincidence that most discoveries emerge in the USA. Discoveries are more frequent in high-security societies than in low-security societies. High-security societies are societies with high freedom and justice. In places with fair distribution, people develop a fundamental sense of self-confidence. In this way, it fundamentally becomes a high-security society. Objectivism is similar. Being in fair environments, the need for justice. All of these are realities brought to us by quantum dynamics. In quantum dynamics, in all situations we call the butterfly effect, the chaos theorem, it is understood that things that appear wrong or evil in the universe are actually part of perfection. After the quantum chaos theorem, everything we see as bad, just like in the concept of chaos, evils and harms are part of perfection. In such a situation, we need to work on new skills from scratch as 21st Century skills.”

## **“Criticism against selfishness should be seen as a gift”**

Emphasizing that the most important behavior protecting a person is accountability, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan said; “The greatest need of selfishness is accountability. The most important thing that protects a person is their ability to be accountable. It is not patriotism, nor religiosity. Selfish people are very uncomfortable with accountability. That is why, after the 2008 crisis, ethics courses were introduced in universities for company employees. There, humanity paid the price for selfish CEOs always saying 'me, me, me.' Therefore, criticism against selfishness should be seen as a gift.”
