## **“School enrollment rate has increased significantly”**

Üsküdar University Founding Rector Psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Nevzat Tarhan drew attention to a rapid decrease in the youth population. On live broadcast, Tarhan said; “I examined TURKSTAT statistics. When we compare the 2024 results with the 2014 results in the data portal published on May 16, there are some positive developments. In particular, the school enrollment rate has increased significantly. While the enrollment rate was around 38 percent, it has approached 50 percent. This is one of the important visible developments. In other developments, there are, for example, health and life satisfaction surveys in Turkey. There are some changes in those surveys. What stands out the most is that we are still rising among European Union countries in terms of youth population ratio. If this continues, in the next 10, 20, 30 years, we will fall below the European Union average. There is a rapid decrease in the youth population. Especially a decrease in Western provinces and an increase in Eastern provinces. For example, while it was 24 percent in the Hakkari region 10 years ago, the youth population rate there has also dropped to 20 percent. In Western provinces like Balıkesir, it has fallen below the European Union average. The lowest is in Bulgaria. There is a decrease in the youth population at Bulgaria's level. This means the cessation of population growth for us,” he said.

## **“The most important factor affecting the population is the erosion of values”**

Tarhan, speaking about a global understanding that views family as a hindrance; “In terms of economic conditions, Western provinces are better than Eastern provinces. When comfort increases, people delay marriage as they try to enjoy life. There is a hidden psychological law, for example, in plants. When reproduction stops in plants, florists take the plant and put it in a closed, dark place. They cover it. When they open it 3 days later, buds emerge. The feeling of 'My future, my life is threatened' triggers reproduction. Reproduction emerged after wars. Now, Eastern societies are experiencing some identity confusion. There is a security crisis. People there might be acting with an unconscious mechanism regarding reproduction. Individuals with better economic levels, opportunities, and welfare levels are more hesitant about marriage. It is necessary to think in this way with psychological dynamics. Another reason is that school enrollment, especially in the conservative segments of society, has increased compared to 10 or 20 years ago in terms of sending children to school. Especially, girls could not attend schools due to clothing. They would marry immediately and have more children as a reaction. That option has now become widespread across Turkey. That also seems like an unseen reason for the population decrease. Previous generations had to mature in scarcity, while current generations have to mature in abundance. Maturing in abundance is more difficult, and there is a global understanding that views maturing, marrying, growing up, and having children as a burden. This understanding also affects our children. There is an understanding that views family as a hindrance, but this is not unique to Turkey; it exists globally. There is an erosion of values. I believe the most important thing affecting the population is the erosion of values. Economic reasons are a result. They certainly exist, but before that, it is beneficial to consider that the erosion of people's values, the increase in a comfort-seeking attitude regarding marriage, the increase in a worldly attitude, and the decrease in idealistic people and young people are also effective in this regard,” he said.

## **“Family support has a preventative role against mental illnesses”**

Tarhan emphasized that incentives for family should be increased and continued; “In the East, in Tunceli, there is an effect on the population similar to Western provinces. In Central Anatolia, in Niğde, there is a result close to the East. Similar results are also seen in Kırıkkale and then Karabük, but Central Anatolia, as always, represents Turkey's average. The increase in Eastern Anatolia is not new. It was present in statistics from 10 years ago. For example, the youth population growth rate in Hakkari was 24 percent. I also checked TURKSTAT's 2014 data portal. That also dropped from 24 percent to 20 percent in Hakkari in 2024. So, there is a general decrease there too. Currently, the fertility rate has fallen. It is very good that incentives are being made in this regard. They are encouraging marriage, encouraging having children. These incentives are very appropriate. They should be increased and continued. Because people have various concerns, but one strong aspect of our Turkey was family insurance. If something happens to a family member, some families have now become extended families and started living in the same house due to economic reasons. Our family support, as social support, prevents suicides and crimes. It has a preventative role in the increase of many mental illnesses,” he stated.

## **“If we don't know the root cause, we cannot diagnose”**

Tarhan, drawing attention to the weakening of the trust environment provided by marriage; “In Turkey, there is a negative trend parallel to the rest of the world in the increase of divorce rates, the weakening of family ties, and the rise of out-of-wedlock birth rates within the family. This has begun to reduce the environment of trust provided by marriage. For this reason, young people currently generally distance themselves from marriage, for global reasons. That is, they will marry at 35, have one child. The wind in the West is in this direction. This wind has now approached us too. They say, ‘I came to this world once, I will live as I please.’ There is such an approach. And it's a situation more about the erosion of values than the economic situation. That is, it's about the meaning attributed to marriage. We are under the influence of a global propaganda that asks, ‘What's the point of marriage?’ We unconsciously mentally buy into this. Help is good, but we need to do a root cause analysis. That is, why aren't young people getting married? Helping them, encouraging them, is a short-term solution. It is very appropriate and useful, but why did this happen? If we don't know the root cause, we cannot diagnose. If we cannot diagnose, we cannot treat. Therefore, it is important to find out where it originates from. The Year of Family has been declared, the state is aware of this. Our President announced that the Year of Family has been declared,” he said.

## **“The global system consumes relationships just as it consumes everything else”**

Tarhan, highlighting that young people are currently afraid of marriage; “They are afraid because divorces and bad examples have increased a lot. Young people ask, ‘My friend got married. 2-3 years passed. Now they have separated their rooms, separated their homes. I wonder if I should get married or not?’ One of the most frequent questions we receive is, ‘Is marriage necessary? What happens if we don’t get married?’ However, what suits human psychological and biological nature is marriage. Because extramarital relationships are generally superficial relationships. The global system consumes relationships just as it consumes everything else. There are no such long, lasting, deep friendship relationships. For example, the word ‘dost’ (close friend) has no exact equivalent in English but it does in Turkish. The relationship within a family is a trust relationship beyond the marital relationship. If there is no trust within the family, the marriage doesn't work. That is, marriage maturity should be measured before marriage. People who want to marry should marry without hesitation when they are ready for marriage, but young people don't know the concept of marriage. That is, they don't know marital maturity. If they knew, they would live as they please in the short term, but they would lose in the medium to long term. Is alleviating the loneliness that marriage provides, having a family as a sanctuary, less important than establishing a good factory? For this reason, individuals who can overcome themselves act more wisely regarding marriage. Current young people act emotionally, easily, and hastily. However, if they act wisely, marriage is more suitable for a person's psychological and biological nature. Someone who is peaceful at home becomes more assertive, enterprising, and successful in their business life,” he said.

## **“Wild capitalism poisoned our youth”**

Tarhan, addressing that people should have abstract goals in life; “We have eased some life conditions. Compared to 10 or 20 years ago, young people have more things but lack ideals. They have no ego ideals. The number of young people with goals worth striving and suffering for in life has decreased. Currently, under the influence of global media, goals like money, status, and sex have become the ego ideals of young people. However, a person should have abstract goals in life. ‘How do I want to be remembered when I reach the end of my life? What kind of person do I want to be?’ In other words, our education system always teaches such worldly goals. In fact, I emphasized this in a somewhat humorous way. Currently, in our education system, a young person in high school becomes a fascist in high school. At university, they become a communist, an atheist. In business life, they become a capitalist. When they retire, they become a Muslim. Such a generation is growing up. Therefore, the philosophy of science in our education system is wrong. It needs to be corrected. This is why young people become so pleasure-seeking and easygoing. The American system, which teaches young people to pursue pleasure as an ego ideal, cannot be an example for our youth. This capitalism is poisoning us. Wild capitalism has poisoned our youth,” he stated.
