## **“He uses three terms for the month of Ramadan: Oruç, sawm, and siyam”**

Making evaluations about the current month of Ramadan based on Bediüzzaman Said Nursî’s work ‘Risale-i Nur’, Tarhan explained the concepts of ‘Oruç, sawm, and siyam’ which draw attention during Ramadan. Tarhan said; “The connection between Ramadan and calamity. This earthquake is a calamity, the pandemic is a calamity, and how will its connection with Ramadan be? This is really important. He uses three terms for the month of Ramadan. Bediüzzaman Hazretleri says Oruç, sawm, and also siyam. If we know these concepts well, we will better understand their differences. What is most meant by Oruç is the body fasting. You restrict yourself from basic needs like eating and drinking for a certain period of the day, you stay away from them. The word sawm appears in the Holy Quran. The word sawm means not only refraining from eating and drinking but also making the five senses fast. Not looking at what is forbidden, paying attention to what is halal-haram, and paying attention to the words coming out of one’s mouth. There is also siyam. Siyam is a higher station. If I’m not mistaken, it also appears in the Holy Quran. There, it means to evaluate the month of Ramadan in a way that leads to the soul's evolution. It means thinking of Ramadan as adorning and embellishing the soul’s development with such resilient spiritual states, high emotions, and high values. The three dimensions of Ramadan fasting should be addressed in this way. If all these happen, you are acting in accordance with the meaning of Ramadan.”

## **“What frightens people most is uncertainty”**

Tarhan pointed out that the feeling that frightens people most is uncertainty, underlining that one of the most important features of the Holy Quran is to eliminate the feeling of uncertainty in humans. Tarhan said; “What frightens people most, causes most distress, and saddens most is uncertainty. It is not calamities like earthquakes or pandemics; it is uncertainty. If a person knows what will happen, they take precautions, at least take a position and act accordingly, eliminating uncertainty, standing stronger, or fleeing. The greatest fear is the fear of uncertainty in humans, as stated in the Holy Quran. The Quran, which carries clear proofs of guidance and distinguishes between truth and falsehood, thus eliminates uncertainty. When looking at other books, other sacred texts, or other scientific books in terms of philosophy of science, philosophy of religion, it is understood that there is no book like the Quran that is written so clearly, distinctly, and with defined boundaries. Because it is a book revealed over 23 years, and its application was carried out by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Therefore, the Holy Quran and its application are clear and explicit enough not to raise any questions in one's mind. Let us know this in fasting as well. It provides a solution to the fear of uncertainty. The Holy Quran’s feature of adding meaning and providing consolation comes from here. Yalom has a saying. He says there are four great fears, four great sources of stress in humans. Things like death, despair, helplessness are always related to uncertainty. If you have a feeling of hope, you cannot give hope to a person when something is uncertain; how would you? You cannot define it, you cannot explain it, and the greatest philosophers have been those who tried to resolve uncertainty. While trying to resolve uncertainty, they unite reason with the heart and eliminate uncertainty, finding peace, because for a person to find peace, they must eliminate uncertainty. There will be Tawhid, you will believe in one God. This is not enough; you will surrender to Him. That is also not enough; you will appoint Him as an agent, you will now give Him agency, you will trust Him, then peace comes. That is why the whole task in Ramadan is to capture this feeling, to grasp the meaning of Ramadan.”

## **“Humankind, the most intelligent being in the universe, still hasn't been able to create DNA”**

Tarhan stated that humankind is the most intelligent being among the causes in the universe, yet has not been able to create a DNA, drawing attention to the limitless power and will of the universe's Creator. Tarhan said; “Humans, the most intelligent being, have not been able to create a DNA so far; they arrange them, but they don't come to life. You know the statue of David, a 15-meter statue in Rome. Michelangelo made the statue so perfectly, reflected the anatomy of the body so beautifully, that those who saw the statue from a distance thought it was alive. Michelangelo got carried away, told the statue to come alive, and when it didn't, he threw the hammer in his hand, breaking the statue's finger. Humankind looks at it that way, 'I made it, everyone admires it, why doesn't it come to life?' he says. He sees himself as so capable. He waits for it to speak, waits for it to come alive, 'why doesn't it come to life?' he asks. They arrange the DNAs, they say 'come alive', but they don't. Even humans, the most intelligent among the causes, haven't solved the secret of this rububiyyah (divinity), let alone quantum, they haven't solved the secret of DNA yet. That is, there is a possessor of high knowledge in the universe who does not show himself, and this is even referred to as 'Fermi Paradox' in quantum physics. They look at the entire universe; the Earth is smaller than a dot in this universe. When they examine other planets, there is no other planet as lively, cheerful, active, green, and watery beautiful as Earth. Now people want, according to my mathematical mind, they say, for only Earth to be like this in such a vast universe is a paradox. They call this the 'Fermi Paradox'. According to this paradox, there are living beings, lives in the universe, but we cannot see them. The paradox, they say, is that our mathematical mind indicates there should be other living beings. They say there are superior communities using high computer technology that could come to Earth and invade it. This is because they do not believe in Tawhid (Oneness of God). If they knew Tawhid, if they knew that Allah is the Absolutely Powerful, the Absolutely Knowing, the Absolutely Capable, the Absolutely Wise, and the Absolutely Willing, meaning He has limitless power and will, they would be able to think that the one who created this universe cannot be of the same kind as this universe. The Creator must be beyond time and space. Only if He is independent of time and space can He manage this universe.”

## **“In Ramadan, we will stop, think, and re-evaluate”**

Tarhan stated that the month of Ramadan is a period to re-evaluate our lives within a year, and emphasized the need to stop, think, and re-evaluate during Ramadan. Tarhan said; “We get carried away in routine; we go to work in the morning and come home in the evening. According to the 15 percent innovation rule, a person should think about the work they do, meaning if they work for ten hours, they should think about their work for an hour and a half. If you want innovation and entrepreneurship, you will apply the 15 percent rule, you will think about the philosophy of your work, you will think about the work. You will determine its policy. For example, we produce the most hazelnuts in the world, but we don't determine hazelnut policies; we produce the most boron in the world, but we don't determine the policies. Those who determine that policy have dedicated time to it, invested in time, established markets, they manage, they raise and lower prices as they wish. That's why in Ramadan, to know Allah, to know Allah's Lordship, to know Allah's Mercy and Compassion, one must look with this perspective. It pushes us to search for meaning. In Ramadan, we will stop, think, re-evaluate. This is called a moratorium in human life, taking a break. You will pause your work, look at it again, and then restart. Ramadan tells us to declare a moratorium on your life for a month, re-evaluate your life, correct your deficiencies, and then continue again. It says to dedicate one month a year, one hour out of twelve, to a moratorium. This is actually for us again. Allah does not do this for us to know or not know, but for the trials in this world, for us to understand and find ourselves. Otherwise, Allah already knows what we will face if we do anything. Just like a computer game, the one who wrote the game knows that when you hit that ball at that coordinate while playing the game, it will be a goal, but the player does not know. Allah's foreknowledge of destiny means the world is a simulation. Allah wrote that simulation, and He knows from which angle, from which position we will hit and whether we will reach the outcome or not. Understanding destiny became much easier after learning this simulation theory.”

## **“If you observe fasting in accordance with its philosophy, it gives meaning and peace”**

Tarhan stated that the act of fasting, like every other act of worship, has a philosophy, and expressed that fasting observed with its philosophy understood brings peace and tranquility. Tarhan said; “Fasting has a philosophy; if you observe fasting in accordance with its philosophy, it gives meaning, it gives peace. We need to observe fasting according to its philosophy. If we organize our life philosophy accordingly, fasting adds meaning for us, adds peace, adds consolation, and also gives a tremendous calmness. It gives not just a calm peace, but a vibrant peace, a tranquil peace. It gives serenity. They told the ostrich, ‘You are a bird, fly,’ it said, ‘I am a camel,’ they told it, ‘You are a camel, carry loads,’ it said, ‘I am a bird.’ Such heedlessness or manipulation prevents humankind from seeing the truth. Indeed, most people are well-intentioned but forget, get caught up in routine and forget. Getting caught up in routine is one of Satan’s tricks, putting a person on autopilot. That's why, while living on autopilot, Allah sometimes sends a calamity, shaking us to awaken from heedlessness, to make us see the truth. It's a kind of divine warning against those who stray from the flock, to break the curtain of heedlessness. Calamities are given to us not to inflict pain, but to awaken us from heedlessness. If a person looks at it this way, they add meaning to the calamity, understand its wisdom, and find consolation when they understand its wisdom. You see in Ramadan, when the adhan is recited at the same time, everyone on that meridian performs worship, millions of people together. Just as you wait for spring to understand a flower, the month of Ramadan is a very beautiful period to understand some of Allah’s attributes. Of course, if you look with that perspective; if you don’t, you won’t see it. This whole matter is entirely about your perspective, where you look from.”
